Ryan Kobayashi, the father of Hannah Kobayashi, died from multiple blunt-force traumatic injuries, according to the Los Angeles County Medical Examiner, which classified the manner of death as suicide. He was found near Los Angeles International Airport on November 24, 2024, while helping search for his daughter.

What the medical examiner confirmed

Ryan Kobayashi was 58 when he died. The Los Angeles County Medical Examiner determined that his cause of death was multiple blunt-force traumatic injuries and ruled the manner of death suicide. ABC7 reported the finding on November 25, 2024, and FOX 13 reported the same medical-examiner determination.

A cause of death describes the physical injury or condition that resulted in a death. The manner of death is the official classification of how the death occurred—for example, suicide, accident, homicide, natural causes, or an undetermined manner.

Where and when Ryan Kobayashi was found

Kobayashi was found in the early morning of Sunday, November 24, 2024, in a parking lot or business area near LAX. ABC7 reported that the location was near 6151 W. Century Boulevard and that Los Angeles police responded at approximately 4 a.m. (ABC7’s report).

Contemporary police and news reports described the circumstances as an apparent jump or fall from a parking structure. E! News reported that police said Kobayashi jumped from a structure near the airport, while FOX 13 described investigators as saying he apparently jumped. Those accounts describe the reported circumstances; the official medical finding establishes the injuries and the manner-of-death classification.

Why he was in Los Angeles

Kobayashi had traveled from Hawaii to Los Angeles to help search for his daughter, Hannah Kobayashi. Hannah, who was 30 at the time, had disappeared after arriving at LAX during travel from Hawaii to New York.

Hannah’s case later developed in a different direction. On December 3, 2024, the Associated Press reported that police believed she had voluntarily crossed into Mexico and said they had found no evidence that she had been trafficked or was otherwise the victim of a crime. On December 11, AP reported that Hannah had been found safe. These later developments provide context for the search but do not change the medical examiner’s finding about Ryan Kobayashi’s death.

What the family said

The family said Ryan had died by suicide after spending approximately 13 days searching for Hannah. The family also asked that public attention remain focused on Hannah’s safety, according to the Associated Press.

That statement should not be read as proof that the search directly caused Ryan’s death or as evidence about his private mental state. The medical examiner’s ruling confirms the manner of death, but it does not establish a motive or explain every factor that may have contributed.

Suicide-related reporting can be distressing, particularly for people who have lost someone or are worried about a loved one. It is best to avoid graphic descriptions, speculation about motive, or language that presents suicide as inevitable or directly caused by one event.
