The chronological order for the released Riddick films is: Pitch Black (2000), The Chronicles of Riddick: Dark Fury (2004), The Chronicles of Riddick (2004), and Riddick (2013). Dark Fury is a 35-minute animated bridge between the first two live-action films, so viewers watching only the features can skip it—but it belongs between Pitch Black and The Chronicles of Riddick in a complete film marathon.
If you want one physical set containing all four released entries, look for Riddick: The Complete Collection Blu-ray. Universal’s collection includes The Chronicles of Riddick, Dark Fury, Pitch Black, and Riddick. Edition contents and availability can vary by retailer and region.
Riddick movies in chronological story order
| # | Title | Year | Format | Approx. runtime |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| 1 | Pitch Black | 2000 | Live-action feature | 107–109 minutes |
| 2 | The Chronicles of Riddick: Dark Fury | 2004 | Animated short | 35 minutes |
| 3 | The Chronicles of Riddick | 2004 | Live-action feature | 119–121 minutes |
| 4 | Riddick | 2013 | Live-action feature | Approximately 119 minutes |
That is the complete released film continuity as documented in Universal’s Riddick: The Complete Collection. The package listing is not itself arranged chronologically, but its four titles are the same four entries listed above.
1. Pitch Black (2000)
Pitch Black is the starting point for Riddick’s film story. A spacecraft carrying a dangerous prisoner crash-lands on an unfamiliar planet. The survivors initially have to fear Riddick, but their situation becomes even more desperate when an eclipse plunges the planet into darkness and nocturnal predators emerge.
- Director: David Twohy
- Starring: Vin Diesel, Radha Mitchell, and Cole Hauser
- Genre: Action, science fiction, and horror
- Rating: R in the United States
- Release: 2000
Runtime listings differ slightly between sources and editions: Universal lists 1 hour 49 minutes, while the AFI Catalog records a 107-minute duration. The difference is small and may reflect cataloging or edition conventions. The important story point is that this is the film that introduces Richard B. Riddick and establishes the survival-horror side of the franchise.

2. The Chronicles of Riddick: Dark Fury (2004)
Dark Fury is an animated short directed by Peter Chung, with Vin Diesel voicing Riddick. It takes place after Pitch Black and before The Chronicles of Riddick, making it the franchise’s chronological bridge.
The short follows Riddick, Jack, and Imam after the survivors’ ordeal on the planet from Pitch Black. Its story helps explain what happens before Riddick’s next live-action adventure and why the characters are moving into a wider world of bounty hunters, criminals, and interplanetary conflict.
- Format: Animated short
- Director: Peter Chung
- Riddick voice: Vin Diesel
- Runtime: Approximately 35 minutes
- Placement: After Pitch Black, before The Chronicles of Riddick
Dark Fury is optional if your priority is only the three live-action features. It is not optional, however, if you want to see every released film entry in story order. Viewers seeking it separately can search for The Chronicles of Riddick: Dark Fury on DVD/Blu-ray, although the title is also included in some Riddick collections.
3. The Chronicles of Riddick (2004)
The second live-action film follows Riddick after the events of Pitch Black and greatly expands the franchise’s scale. The first film is a relatively contained struggle for survival; this sequel moves into space opera, with Riddick caught between opposing forces in a conflict that could affect humanity’s future.
- Director and writer: David Twohy
- Starring: Vin Diesel, Thandiwe Newton, Judi Dench, Keith David, Colm Feore, and Karl Urban
- Genre: Action and science fiction
- Rating: PG-13 in the United States
- Release: 2004
Universal lists the film at 2 hours and 1 minute. The AFI Catalog records 119 minutes, so—as with Pitch Black—the exact runtime depends on the edition or database being consulted.
This is the film to watch immediately after Dark Fury. It introduces the larger political, religious, and cultural mythology surrounding Riddick, including the Necromonger threat and the Furyan background that becomes important to the character’s identity.

4. Riddick (2013)
Riddick is the third released live-action feature and the latest released film centered on the character. It follows Riddick after he has been left for dead on a sun-scorched planet. When he activates an emergency beacon, bounty hunters arrive—and they soon face both alien predators and a deadly storm.

- Starring: Vin Diesel as Riddick
- Genre: Action and science fiction
- Rating: R in the United States
- Release: 2013

The film deliberately returns to the more focused survival-and-monsters setup associated with Pitch Black. It is still a sequel, not a remake or reboot. Watch it after The Chronicles of Riddick.
What is the release order?
For the three live-action features, release order and story order are identical:
- Pitch Black — 2000
- The Chronicles of Riddick — 2004
- Riddick — 2013
The only complication is Dark Fury. It was released in 2004 around the time of The Chronicles of Riddick, but its story is set after Pitch Black and before the second live-action film. For that reason, a complete chronological marathon places it between the two features.
Should you watch Dark Fury?
Yes, if you want the fullest version of the film continuity or enjoy animated expansions of live-action franchises. It is short, directly connected to the first film, and officially treated as part of the Riddick film collection.

You can skip it if you want a streamlined Vin Diesel marathon. The three live-action films remain understandable without it, and the core viewing order becomes:
Pitch Black → The Chronicles of Riddick → Riddick
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. What about Riddick: Furya?
Riddick: Furya is the planned fourth live-action film, but it should not be counted among the released Riddick movies based on the available information summarized here. The project is associated with Vin Diesel and writer-director David Twohy and is intended to take Riddick to his homeworld, Furya.
A production-industry listing updated April 28, 2026 identifies the feature as completed and records filming in Germany, Spain, and the United Kingdom. That information does not establish a public theatrical release date. The available database evidence is inconsistent: TV Insider labels it “Coming Soon: 2026,” while IMDb’s release-information page does not list a release date. Therefore, the accurate description is upcoming or unreleased, with no officially confirmed release date located for this guide—not “released in 2026.”

If an official release is announced, Furya would most likely follow Riddick in the viewing order because it is described as a continuation and homecoming story. That position should be checked against the finished film’s official synopsis, particularly if the movie uses substantial flashbacks.

For a physical-media marathon, Universal’s collection is the most direct all-in-one option identified in the research: Riddick: The Complete Collection Blu-ray is listed as a Blu-ray plus Digital package containing all four released film entries. Universal also lists individual editions, including unrated director’s cuts of Pitch Black and The Chronicles of Riddick. Check the exact packaging, region, included cuts, and digital redemption terms before purchasing, since those details can change by market and edition.
