One Life is the 2023 British biographical drama about Nicholas “Nicky” Winton, the British humanitarian whose network helped bring 669 predominantly Jewish children from Czechoslovakia to safety in Britain in 1939. Directed by James Hawes, the film moves between Winton’s urgent rescue work in Prague and London and his later life, when the scale of what he helped accomplish—and the children he could not save—finally becomes impossible to ignore.

Anthony Hopkins plays the older Winton, while Johnny Flynn portrays him in 1938–1939. Helena Bonham Carter, Jonathan Pryce, Lena Olin, and Romola Garai also appear. The film runs 109 minutes and is rated PG in the United States.

What is One Life about?

One Life dramatizes the true story of Nicholas Winton’s efforts to rescue children endangered by the Nazi threat in Czechoslovakia immediately before the outbreak of the Second World War. In late 1938, Winton traveled to Prague, where he encountered refugee workers and families facing persecution and displacement. He then helped organize the complex process of securing British approval, finding foster homes, raising money, preparing documentation, and arranging transportation.

The film’s story unfolds across two periods. The younger Winton works against time in 1938 and 1939, while the older Winton lives a quiet, apparently ordinary life in Britain decades later. That later section centers on memory, responsibility, and the emotional consequences of a rescue effort he had largely kept private.

Who was Nicholas Winton?

Nicholas Winton was a British stockbroker who became involved in a rescue effort for children in Czechoslovakia during the months before Britain entered the Second World War. He was not a soldier or government official. His contribution was organizational: he helped turn an urgent humanitarian need into a workable evacuation and foster-care operation.

The historical record is more accurately described as a networked rescue than as the work of one person acting alone. Winton’s efforts depended on refugee workers in Prague, contacts and volunteers in Britain, fundraisers, British officials, foster families, and others who dealt with applications, guarantees, money, paperwork, and travel. The film places Winton at its center, but the operation could not have functioned without this wider group.

How many children did Nicholas Winton save?

According to the United States Holocaust Memorial Museum, Winton’s rescue operation brought approximately 669 children from Czechoslovakia to safety in Great Britain. Most of the children were Jewish, so “669 mostly Jewish children” is more precise than saying every child rescued was Jewish.

The figure has a documented but slightly complicated history. Winton’s scrapbook accounted for 664 children. Later research connected five additional people to a transport financed by Winton, producing the accepted total of 669. Historical sources also caution that some children rescued through the operation may not yet be identified.

It is therefore misleading to say that Winton personally transported all 669 children. He organized and helped coordinate the rescue; transportation, border arrangements, foster placement, and care involved many other people and institutions.

How the 1939 rescue worked

The rescue was a logistics operation conducted under rapidly deteriorating political conditions. It required more than finding a route out of Czechoslovakia. Organizers had to:

  • identify children whose families were seeking safety;
  • prepare applications and supporting documents;
  • secure British guarantees and satisfy immigration requirements;
  • raise money for travel and related expenses;
  • find British families willing to foster the children;
  • coordinate trains, ships, officials, and volunteers; and
  • move the children before the borders closed.

Eight transports were organized between March and August 1939. The first left Prague by plane on March 14, 1939—one day before German forces occupied the Czech lands. Seven later transports traveled by rail and sea.

This practical, administrative work is one of the film’s important strengths. Rather than depicting rescue only as a series of dramatic confrontations, One Life shows how humanitarian action often depends on forms, telephone calls, money, persuasion, housing, and people willing to accept responsibility for strangers.

Spoilers: what happened to the final transport?

The rescue was significant, but it was not complete. A final transport planned for September 1, 1939, was halted after Germany invaded Poland and war began. It was expected to carry approximately 250 children. The Nicholas Winton organization states that most of those children were never heard from again.

This failed transport is essential to understanding the film’s moral tension. Winton helped save hundreds of lives, but he did not save everyone who had been placed in the rescue system. The story is not a simple account of one heroic figure who overcame every obstacle. It is also a story about limits, missed chances, and the unbearable difference between the people who reached safety and those who did not.

Why did Winton’s story remain unknown for so long?

Winton did not publicize the rescue for decades. In 1988, his wife, Grete, discovered the scrapbook documenting the children and the operation. That discovery helped bring the story to wider attention.

Winton’s appearance on the BBC program That’s Life! in 1988 became a defining public moment. Many of the children he had helped rescue—by then adults with families and careers of their own—were brought into the story’s public history. The film uses this later recognition not merely as a sentimental reveal, but as a confrontation with memory: Winton had spent years treating the rescue as something that needed to be done, not as an achievement that deserved personal recognition.

What the film gets right about the historical story

Rescue was collective

The most important historical qualification is that Winton was an organizer within a broader network. The film’s focus on one protagonist is understandable, but the real rescue also depended on people in Prague, British refugee workers, foster families, fundraisers, officials, and organizations. A responsible description is that Winton organized, helped arrange, or coordinated the rescue—not that he single-handedly carried it out.

The children were predominantly Jewish

Sources describe the rescued children as mostly or predominantly Jewish. That wording matters. It recognizes the rescue’s place within the history of the Holocaust while avoiding the inaccurate claim that every child had the same background.

The number 669 has a clear provenance

The accepted figure is not an unexamined promotional statistic. Winton’s records listed 664 children, and later research identified five additional people connected to a Winton-financed transport. Some identities may still be unresolved.

The rescue had an ending marked by loss

The canceled September transport prevents the story from becoming a complete triumph narrative. The film’s emotional force comes partly from holding survival and loss together: hundreds reached Britain, while many others remained trapped as war began.

What is One Life really about?

At its surface, One Life is a historical rescue drama. Its deeper subject is how an individual understands a life spent making consequential choices without expecting public recognition.

Anonymity versus recognition

The younger Winton is absorbed in practical work and does not appear to be building a legacy. The older Winton’s discomfort with attention reflects the tension between private humility and public memory. The scrapbook becomes the physical bridge between those two identities.

The burden of “not enough”

Winton’s achievement can be measured in the hundreds of children who survived, but the film also asks what happens when a rescuer remembers the people left behind. The canceled final transport gives the story its painful counterweight.

Rescue as ordinary work

The film emphasizes that extraordinary humanitarian outcomes can depend on ordinary tasks performed persistently: making calls, finding homes, gathering documents, persuading institutions, and refusing to accept administrative barriers as the final answer.

Memory as evidence

The scrapbook, survivor testimony, and broadcast television all contribute to the recovery of a history that had remained largely private. The film consequently treats remembrance as an active process rather than a passive celebration.

How to watch One Life in the United States

Physical editions

For viewers who want a copy that is not dependent on a streaming catalog, a One Life movie DVD is a straightforward option to look for. Current availability research identified DVD listings through Amazon DVD/Blu-ray and Barnes & Noble. Do not assume that a particular seller, price, or stock status will remain unchanged.

A One Life Blu-ray and DVD combination edition is another option for households that want both high-definition and standard-disc formats. A retailer listing identified a Blu-ray/DVD edition, but the listed seller was a third-party distributor rather than the retailer itself. Check the seller, region, condition, shipping terms, and return policy before ordering.

A U.S. Decal Releasing DVD catalog entry identifies an edition released April 30, 2024, with a 109-minute runtime, PG rating, English audio, English SDH and Spanish subtitles, and Region 1 playback information. Region compatibility matters particularly for buyers importing discs or using players purchased outside the United States.

Further reading after the film

The film is a useful starting point, but viewers who want historical context should consult authoritative Holocaust and refugee-history sources rather than relying only on a dramatization. A Nicholas Winton biography can provide more detail about his life and the rescue operation; the film’s official site identifies Barbara Winton’s If It’s Not Impossible…: The Life of Sir Nicholas Winton as its source biography.

Readers may also want a reliable Kindertransport history book or educational materials from museums, archives, and Holocaust-education organizations. These can help place Winton’s operation within the wider history of children’s evacuations, refugee policy, British foster care, and the persecution of Jewish communities in Nazi-occupied Europe. Specific editions should be checked for author, publication date, format, and availability before purchase.

Is One Life worth watching?

Yes—particularly for viewers interested in historical documentaries and dramas about rescue, memory, and moral responsibility. The film offers a concise introduction to Winton’s work while avoiding the inaccurate idea that he acted alone or that the rescue was an uncomplicated success.

Its 109-minute runtime makes it accessible as a single-evening film, but the subject warrants discussion afterward. Viewers should be prepared for the contrast between the lives saved and the children lost when the final transport was canceled. That contrast is not a minor detail; it is central to the historical meaning of the story.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is One Life a true story?

Yes. The 2023 film is based on the life of Nicholas Winton and his role in organizing a rescue operation that brought approximately 669 predominantly Jewish children from Czechoslovakia to safety in Britain before the Second World War.

Did Nicholas Winton save 669 children by himself?

No. Winton was a key organizer, but the rescue depended on a broad network of refugee workers, British volunteers, foster families, fundraisers, officials, and organizations. “Helped organize” or “coordinated” is more accurate than “personally rescued” all 669 children.

Was every child rescued by Winton Jewish?

No. Historical sources describe the children as predominantly or mostly Jewish, not exclusively Jewish.

What happened to the children on the final train?

A transport planned for September 1, 1939, carrying approximately 250 children was halted when Germany invaded Poland and war began. The Nicholas Winton organization states that most of those children were never heard from again.

Who plays Nicholas Winton in One Life?

Anthony Hopkins plays the older Winton, and Johnny Flynn plays him during the 1938–1939 rescue effort.

Where can I watch One Life?

U.S. availability changes by service and date. The researched listing identified subscription, ad-supported, rental, purchase, DVD, and Blu-ray options, including Amazon Video, Apple TV, Fandango at Home, Tubi TV, Plex Player, YouTube Free, and other services. Check current local listings before watching.

The Bottom Line

One Life is best understood as a film about organized, collective rescue—not a story of one man acting alone. Its account of Nicholas Winton’s 669-child rescue is historically grounded, but the canceled final transport and the children who were not reached are just as important as the lives saved. That balance makes the film more than a conventional inspirational biography: it is a reminder of what determined action can accomplish, and of the human cost when action arrives too late.
