Malcolm-Jamal Warner, best known as Theo Huxtable on The Cosby Show, died on July 20, 2025, at age 54. Former castmates including Bill Cosby, Geoffrey Owens and Keshia Knight Pulliam, along with later collaborators such as Tracee Ellis Ross and Angela Bassett, publicly remembered Warner as a generous colleague, gifted performer and deeply thoughtful person.
Warner died while vacationing with his wife and daughter in Costa Rica. Costa Rican police said he was caught in a rip current near Cocles Beach in Limón Province. The country’s forensic pathology department classified the death as accidental asphyxia by submersion.

What happened to Malcolm-Jamal Warner
Warner was swimming with his eight-year-old daughter near Cocles Beach when the incident occurred, according to Costa Rican police. Surfers intervened: one brought the child to safety, while Warner was taken ashore and given CPR before he was pronounced dead.
The official account is important because early reports described the circumstances less certainly, including speculation that Warner had been attempting a rescue. Police confirmed that he had been caught by a rip current; the autopsy classified the death as accidental asphyxia by submersion. There is no basis for adding claims about his intentions in the water beyond that account.

Warner’s death prompted an immediate response from people who had worked with him during his eight seasons on The Cosby Show, as well as from colleagues who knew him through later television roles, music, poetry and community work.
Bill Cosby recalled Warner’s discipline and preparation
Bill Cosby, who played Theo’s television father, Cliff Huxtable, spoke about Warner with CBS News anchor Jericka Duncan on July 22, 2025. Cosby said that he and Phylicia Rashad, who played Claire Huxtable, had embraced emotionally over the phone after learning that Warner had died.
Cosby also remembered Warner’s discipline, preparation and dedication to acting. A spokesperson for Cosby said the news brought back memories of the death of Cosby’s son Ennis. That comparison reflects the spokesperson’s characterization of Cosby’s feelings; it should not be presented as an independent psychological assessment.
Rashad’s involvement also requires careful wording. The available reporting supports Cosby’s account that he spoke with her and that they grieved together by phone. It does not provide a separate, independently published statement from Rashad in the cited coverage, so her reaction should not be turned into a direct quotation.

Geoffrey Owens remembered a “lovely man”
Geoffrey Owens, who played Elvin Tibideaux on The Cosby Show and Warner’s on-screen brother-in-law, issued a statement to ABC News. Owens described Warner as a lovely man and a sweet, sensitive soul.
He also highlighted Warner’s love of creation, acting and music, as well as his generosity toward the people who worked with him. Owens’ tribute reflected a common theme in the responses to Warner’s death: colleagues remembered not only the child actor who became Theo Huxtable, but an adult artist who continued developing his work across several fields.
Keshia Knight Pulliam shared a tribute connecting their families
Keshia Knight Pulliam, who played Rudy Huxtable, posted a tribute on July 27 or 28, 2025. ABC News reported that the post included video of Warner performing onstage at City Winery in Atlanta, followed by footage of two young girls believed to be their daughters.
The post connected Pulliam and Warner’s long professional relationship with their lives as parents. Because the report described the children as “believed to be” their daughters, their identities should remain qualified and private rather than being stated as confirmed details.

Raven-Symoné and the original cast’s continuing connection
Raven-Symoné, who appeared as Olivia Kendall on The Cosby Show, also publicly reacted to Warner’s death. The available reporting confirms her tribute but provides less detail than the published accounts from Owens, Pulliam and Cosby. It is therefore more accurate to identify her among the cast members who mourned Warner without inventing specific wording for her response.
Warner played Theo Huxtable from 1984 through 1992. The role made him one of the most recognizable young performers on American television, and he received an Emmy nomination for outstanding supporting actor in a comedy series in 1986.
Tributes from Warner’s later co-stars
The mourning extended beyond The Cosby Show. Tracee Ellis Ross, who played Warner’s television wife on BET’s Reed Between the Lines, wrote that she loved him and remembered him as warm, gentle, present, kind, thoughtful, deep, funny and elegant.
Angela Bassett, who worked with Warner on 9-1-1, described him as a gifted actor, longtime friend and compassionate, supportive colleague. Bassett recalled meeting Warner when he was already known as a star of The Cosby Show and later working with him herself, giving their 9-1-1 collaboration a sense of professional reunion.

Eddie Griffin, Warner’s co-star on the UPN sitcom Malcolm & Eddie, remembered him as a “big little brother” in a social-media tribute reported by TIME. Other public mourners included Jamie Foxx, Viola Davis, Taraji P. Henson, Jennifer Hudson, Magic Johnson and Niecy Nash, along with musicians and other colleagues who had worked with Warner.
Warner’s career went far beyond Theo Huxtable
Warner’s best-known role remained central to the public response, but his career after The Cosby Show was substantial. He went on to star in Malcolm & Eddie, Reed Between the Lines and The Resident. He also appeared in Sons of Anarchy, Suits and American Crime Story: The People v. O.J. Simpson.
He worked as an actor, director, spoken-word poet and musician. Berklee College of Music colleagues remembered his involvement with creative-youth programs and emphasized his humanity as part of his legacy. Those recollections help explain why the tributes came from across television, film, music and education rather than only from his former sitcom cast.
Warner had spoken publicly about the danger of being defined by a childhood role. In a 2014 CBS interview, he said he had consciously worked to build a life after The Cosby Show rather than become a “where are they now” child actor. In a 2015 Associated Press interview, he acknowledged that the allegations against Cosby had tarnished the show’s cultural legacy while also saying that he maintained a private relationship with Cosby.

Those comments provide necessary context for Cosby’s tribute. Warner’s personal memories and relationships do not resolve the broader controversy surrounding Cosby or erase the debate over the show’s legacy. They do, however, show that Warner approached the history of the series with both personal loyalty and an awareness of the harm the controversy had done to its cultural standing.

A year after Warner’s death, the story shifted from public reactions by colleagues to the continuing grief of his family. In an interview published by CBS News on July 23, 2026, Warner’s widow, Tenisha Warner, told Gayle King that the anniversary remained difficult to relive and described the day of his death as the worst day of her life.
Tenisha Warner said her body went into shock after the news and that her immediate focus became her daughter and the responsibility of continuing to parent her as the surviving parent. She had largely remained private after Warner’s death.
In September 2025, she publicly identified herself, shared a wedding photograph and announced the Warner Family Foundation and River & Ember, ventures established with her daughter in Warner’s honor. The anniversary interview presented these efforts as part of the family’s attempt to preserve Warner’s legacy while continuing to live with the loss.
Where to revisit Warner’s work
The Bottom Line
Malcolm-Jamal Warner’s former The Cosby Show castmates remembered the performer behind Theo Huxtable, while later collaborators and family members described a broader legacy built through acting, music, poetry, mentorship and kindness. The July 2026 interview with Tenisha Warner added the family’s continuing grief and legacy work to that public remembrance.
