Spoilers for Squid Game Season 2, especially Episode 6.
Thanos, Player 230, is killed by Lee Myung-gi, Player 333, shortly after the Mingle game. During a violent bathroom fight, Thanos attacks and begins choking Myung-gi. Myung-gi grabs a fork from the players’ meal supplies and stabs Thanos in the neck. Thanos collapses and dies—not in an official game, and not at the hands of a guard, but during the dormitory violence that erupts among the contestants.
Which episode does Thanos die in?
Thanos dies in Episode 6 of Squid Game Season 2, shortly after the Mingle challenge. The bathroom fight takes place during the disorder that follows the game, when the contestants’ argument over whether to continue competing turns into open violence.
Season 2 contains seven episodes, so Thanos is already dead before the finale. His death should not be confused with the major death in Episode 7: after Gi-hun’s failed rebellion, the Front Man shoots Jung-bae.

Who kills Thanos?
Lee Myung-gi, Player 333, kills Thanos. Thanos has been antagonizing Myung-gi over the cryptocurrency losses that brought both men into the competition. He humiliates, threatens, and bullies him, establishing a personal tension that finally erupts in the bathroom.
Thanos initially has the advantage. He overpowers Myung-gi and starts choking him. In the struggle, Myung-gi reaches for a fork and drives it into Thanos’s neck. Thanos falls, and the wound kills him.
The important distinction: Thanos is not eliminated by a guard, a game official, or a failed game challenge. He is killed by another contestant during a spontaneous fight after Mingle.
What happens in the bathroom fight?
- The Mingle aftermath intensifies the players’ divisions. Contestants are split between those who want to continue pursuing the prize money and those who want to end the competition.
- Thanos and Nam-gyu become involved in the pressure campaign. The surrounding conflict includes attempts to influence Min-su’s vote and growing hostility between the two sides.
- Thanos confronts Myung-gi. Their dispute is especially personal because of their shared connection to the failed cryptocurrency investment.
- Thanos attacks first and begins choking Myung-gi.
- Myung-gi uses a fork as an improvised weapon. He stabs Thanos in the neck during the struggle.
- Thanos dies from the injury. The scene ends his story abruptly, amid the wider violence spreading through the sleeping quarters.
The fight is not a planned execution or an official punishment. It is an interpersonal confrontation that becomes fatal. That difference is central to what the scene means: the contestants are no longer only killing—or being killed—according to rules imposed by the organizers.
Why does Thanos die so suddenly?
Thanos’s abrupt death is intentional. Choi Seung-hyun, the performer who plays Thanos and is also known as T.O.P, explained in Netflix’s behind-the-scenes coverage that he viewed the character as dangerous and felt the timing of the death worked precisely because it arrived at a seemingly random moment.
Thanos survives the earlier formal challenges through aggression, intimidation, and reckless confidence. The show then removes him in a cramped bathroom, only moments after another game has ended. There is no ceremonial showdown, final speech, or heroic transformation. He simply becomes vulnerable when the violence he has helped encourage turns against him.

That structure makes his death more unsettling than a conventional villain’s defeat. A contestant can survive a carefully designed children’s game and still die minutes later because of a fight over the players’ political divisions. The competition’s rules create one kind of danger; the contestants’ behavior creates another.
What does Thanos’s death reveal about his character?
A volatile failed rapper
Thanos enters the competition as Player 230 after losing money in a failed cryptocurrency investment. Netflix’s character material describes him as unpredictable and focused on winning. Choi Seung-hyun has also described his interpretation of Thanos as a simple, volatile failed rapper rather than an established superstar.

Thanos performs as though he is already larger than the room, but his bravado is unstable. He uses mockery and intimidation to dominate other players, particularly those he believes are weaker or less willing to fight back.
Drug use and erratic behavior
Drug use is another important part of the characterization. Choi explained that Thanos relies heavily on drugs, experiences anxiety when sober, and behaves very differently while under their influence. The series uses that contrast to account for his manic confidence, memory lapses, bullying, and tendency to treat dangerous situations as entertainment.
His death does not redeem him or give him a moral lesson. He dies while behaving in a way that is consistent with the aggression and sense of invulnerability he has displayed throughout the season. The fork is ordinary and improvised, which makes the end feel like a consequence of the chaos Thanos helped intensify rather than a grand conclusion worthy of his self-image.
Why is the bathroom fight important to Season 2?
The bathroom fight marks a major change in the contestants’ relationship to the game. Before this point, the players argue, vote, threaten one another, and compete inside the organizers’ framework. After Mingle, that conflict becomes direct killing.

The violence is part of a broader dormitory massacre involving players on opposing sides of the vote. Thanos’s death therefore has consequences beyond his individual storyline. It shows that the contestants’ political disagreement has become physically uncontrollable, even outside the official rounds.
This escalation also helps explain why Gi-hun moves toward rebellion. He tries to persuade the other contestants that waiting for another game is no longer enough and organizes an armed uprising against the guards in Episode 7. That rebellion fails, and the Front Man kills Jung-bae, but the chain of events begins with the growing violence among the players—including the fight that kills Thanos.
What does Myung-gi’s role in the death mean?
Myung-gi’s action is both situational and personal. In the immediate moment, he is fighting for his life while Thanos chokes him. But the confrontation also reverses the power relationship that has defined their interactions. Thanos has treated Myung-gi as someone he can humiliate and control; Myung-gi ultimately kills him with a cheap fork found in the bathroom or meal area.
It would be inaccurate to describe the scene as a planned execution. Myung-gi does not carry out an official punishment or a premeditated elimination. The death happens during a rapidly escalating struggle, which is precisely why it feels so sudden and chaotic.

What do Thanos’s purple hair and colorful nails symbolize?
Thanos’s appearance is built around references to the Marvel character who shares his name. Choi Seung-hyun said that the purple hair was inspired by Marvel’s Thanos. The multicolored nails reference the Infinity Stones and also evoke Skittles; the show even includes dialogue about the Infinity Stones in connection with the design.
These details are visual characterization, not evidence that the Squid Game character has Marvel powers or any literal connection to the Marvel universe.

As an interpretation, his death creates an ironic contrast with that grandiose styling. A character named and dressed to suggest cosmic power is ultimately killed by an ordinary fork in a confined bathroom. The visual joke works because the costume promises invulnerability while the story repeatedly shows how fragile Thanos actually is.

| Character | When the death occurs | How the character dies | Why it matters |
|---|---|---|---|
| Thanos, Player 230 | Episode 6, after Mingle | Myung-gi stabs him in the neck with a fork during a bathroom fight | Shows that contestant-on-contestant violence has become lethal outside the formal games |
| Jung-bae | Episode 7 finale | The Front Man shoots him after Gi-hun’s rebellion fails | Closes the season’s uprising and deepens Gi-hun’s emotional crisis |
Thanos’s death closes the Mingle aftermath. Jung-bae’s death closes the season and sets up the emotional stakes that continue beyond it. A later storyline should not be interpreted as evidence that Thanos survived the bathroom attack.

Does Nam-gyu kill Thanos?
No. Nam-gyu is involved in the surrounding conflict, but Lee Myung-gi, Player 333, is the contestant who stabs Thanos.
Was Thanos’s death part of an official Squid Game round?
No. The bathroom fight is contestant-on-contestant violence after Mingle, not one of the organizers’ formal games.
Why does Myung-gi kill Thanos?
Thanos attacks and chokes Myung-gi during their confrontation. Myung-gi uses a fork to defend himself, although the fight is also fueled by their earlier conflict over cryptocurrency losses and Thanos’s repeated bullying.
Is Thanos connected to Marvel’s Thanos?
The character’s purple hair and multicolored nails deliberately reference Marvel’s Thanos and the Infinity Stones, but the two characters are not literally connected and the Squid Game character has no superpowers.
The Bottom Line
Bottom line: Thanos dies in Episode 6, shortly after Mingle, when Lee Myung-gi stabs him in the neck with a fork during a bathroom fight. His death is important because it happens outside an official game: the contestants’ political conflict has become violent enough for them to kill one another directly. It also contrasts Thanos’s extravagant, supposedly invincible image with the mundane and brutally sudden way he dies.
