Short answer: the original 9Anime service rebranded as AniWave on August 2, 2023, then shut down in late August 2024. The former service’s community warned that websites claiming to be the “new” or “official” 9Anime or AniWave were fake. A current site using the old name, logo, or interface should therefore be treated as an unverified clone—not as a confirmed continuation of the original service.

9Anime became AniWave—but AniWave is offline
The timeline is straightforward:
- 2016: The service operated under the 9Anime name, according to historical reporting.
- August 2, 2023: Reporting documented the rebrand from 9Anime to AniWave.
- August 27, 2024: AniWave displayed a farewell message saying the service was gone. The message also warned users that websites claiming to be AniWave or 9Anime were fake.
- August 28, 2024: News coverage connected the disappearance with a wider shutdown affecting several major piracy brands associated with the FMovies operation and enforcement activity involving Vietnamese authorities.
The exact internal reason for AniWave’s closure was not fully disclosed by its administrators. It is more accurate to describe the shutdown as occurring amid broader enforcement and legal pressure than to claim a specific court order or single definitive cause that has not been independently established.
Is 9Anime still operating?
The original 9Anime/AniWave service should be considered permanently offline. The strongest evidence is the former service community’s farewell statement, which said AniWave was gone and would not return, together with contemporaneous reporting about the shutdown.
That means a domain currently using “9Anime,” “AniWave,” the old logo, or a familiar-looking interface is not automatically legitimate. No post-shutdown 9Anime-branded domain was authenticated in the research for this guide. The former community’s warning was categorical: sites making those claims after the shutdown were fake.

- an APK or other mobile application;

What to do if you already used a suspicious 9Anime site
If you only opened a page and did not download anything or enter credentials, close it, remove any unwanted notification permission, and run the normal security updates for your browser and device. If you installed software or entered sensitive information, take more extensive steps:
- Disconnect the affected device from sensitive accounts while you assess it. If possible, stop using it for banking, password management, and account recovery.
- Uninstall the suspicious application or extension using the operating system or browser’s normal settings. Do not use an unverified “cleanup” tool recommended by the same website.
- Run a reputable, up-to-date security scan and install pending operating-system, browser, and device-firmware updates.
- Change exposed passwords from a clean device. Start with email, banking, payment, password-manager, and social accounts. Do not reuse the compromised password.
- Enable multifactor authentication wherever the account supports it, and review active sessions, recovery addresses, and unfamiliar security changes.
- Monitor financial accounts if payment information was entered, and contact the card issuer promptly if you see an unfamiliar transaction.
