How DoorBot Went From Tears on Shark Tank to Amazon’s Reported $1 Billion Deal

Jamie Siminoff’s DoorBot left Shark Tank without a deal in 2013. Rebranded as Ring, the company expanded into home security and was acquired by Amazon in a transaction reported at more than $1 billion.

DoorBot left Shark Tank in 2013 without an investment. Five years later, the renamed company—Ring—was acquired by Amazon in a transaction widely reported as worth more than $1 billion.

That makes the story sound like a simple case of the Sharks missing a billion-dollar opportunity. The reality is more useful: the television appearance supplied attention, but the outcome depended on a rebrand, years of product development, outside financing, distribution, and execution. There is also an important valuation distinction: contemporary reports described a deal worth more than $1 billion, while Amazon later disclosed approximately $839 million in cash consideration, net of cash acquired.

The 2013 DoorBot pitch

Jamie Siminoff appeared on ABC’s Shark Tank in 2013 to pitch DoorBot, a connected doorbell that allowed homeowners to see and speak with visitors through a smartphone. He asked for $700,000 in exchange for 10% of the company.

The product addressed a straightforward problem: a homeowner could find out who was at the door without being physically present. In its early form, DoorBot was a relatively focused connected-device business. It was not yet the broad home-security platform that Ring would later become.

As the pitch progressed, Kevin O’Leary became the last Shark still making an offer. O’Leary proposed $700,000 for 5% equity, plus a royalty that would start at 10% of sales and drop to 7% after his investment had been recovered. Siminoff countered with different terms, but the two sides did not reach an agreement.

That is the factual core of the famous “missed opportunity” story: DoorBot did not receive a deal on the show. The Sharks did not collectively reject a company already valued at $1 billion. They evaluated an early-stage company in 2013, before the rebrand, later financing, expanded product line, and Amazon acquisition.

What about the tears?

The emotional part of the story comes from Siminoff’s later recollections and contemporary coverage of his reaction after leaving the show without an investment. It is more accurate to describe him as becoming emotional or crying after the pitch than to claim that the broadcast necessarily contained a long, dramatic crying scene.

The distinction matters because the “tears on Shark Tank” framing compresses several moments into one memorable headline. The televised pitch ended in a no-deal. The tears belong to the broader post-pitch story and to Siminoff’s account of what the experience meant to him—not necessarily to a prolonged scene shown on camera.

DoorBot became Ring

After the television appearance, the company did not remain DoorBot. Siminoff renamed and repositioned it as Ring, a name that better suited a product intended to become part of a wider home-security system.

Ring’s first video doorbell was introduced in 2014. The change was more than cosmetic. The company moved away from presenting the device as a single connected doorbell and toward a broader consumer-security proposition built around video, alerts, cameras, and connected protection.

That evolution is one reason the eventual Amazon outcome cannot be attributed to the Shark Tank appearance alone. Attention may help a young company, but attention does not create a durable product line, solve manufacturing and support problems, attract follow-on capital, or build a scalable business.

Did Shark Tank still help?

Apparently, yes—just not through a Shark investment. Amazon’s own account of Ring says the appearance generated enough consumer attention and sales to help the company through a precarious period. In other words, the pitch produced a different kind of value: exposure.

Viewers who saw the product could become customers even though the Sharks did not invest. That consumer interest gave Ring additional breathing room while it refined its offering and pursued outside funding. The show was therefore commercially significant, but it was not the same thing as receiving O’Leary’s capital and expertise.

There is no reliable basis for saying that the television exposure alone caused the later acquisition. Ring still had to turn attention into sales and then into a business attractive to investors and, eventually, Amazon.

From one doorbell to a home-security platform

Ring expanded beyond the original video-doorbell concept. Its product range grew to include cameras, alarms, sensors, and related security products. Amazon’s Alexa Fund was identified as an investor in Ring by 2017, before Amazon announced its acquisition.

The modern Ring ecosystem also illustrates how far the business moved beyond the DoorBot prototype. Depending on model and market, the current U.S. catalog includes wired and battery-powered video doorbells, a Peephole Cam, cameras, alarms, sensors, smart lighting, and accessories.

Accessories turned the doorbell into part of a more complete setup. Ring lists products such as Chime devices, quick-release battery packs, charging stations, no-drill mounts, wedge kits, and solar chargers. A homeowner considering a battery model may need a spare battery or charging accessory; someone renting a property may care more about a compatible no-drill mount. Those practical details have little to do with the original pitch, but they show how a focused gadget can evolve into an ecosystem.

Amazon announces the acquisition

In February 2018, Amazon announced that it intended to acquire Ring. Contemporary news reports characterized the transaction as worth more than $1 billion. For Amazon, Ring fit naturally with its connected-home ambitions and gave it a substantial home-security business alongside its other smart-home products.

Was it really a $1 billion deal?

“More than $1 billion” is fair shorthand for the reported transaction, but it should not be treated as an exact cash payment.

Contemporary reporting used a broader transaction-value figure and described the acquisition as exceeding $1 billion. Amazon’s later 2018 Form 10-K disclosed approximately $839 million in cash consideration, net of cash acquired, for Ring.

Those numbers are not necessarily contradictory. The $839 million figure is an accounting disclosure that deducts cash acquired from the consideration figure. The press reports used a broader reported deal value. The careful formulation is:

Amazon acquired Ring in a deal reported at more than $1 billion; Amazon later disclosed approximately $839 million in net cash consideration.

It would be inaccurate to state that Amazon definitively paid exactly $1 billion in cash. It would also be misleading to use the $839 million accounting figure as though it disproved the reported billion-dollar valuation. They describe the transaction from different perspectives.

A timeline of the DoorBot-to-Ring story

Year or date What happened
2013 DoorBot and Jamie Siminoff appear on Shark Tank. The company seeks $700,000 for 10% and leaves without a deal.
2014 The company operates under the Ring name, and the Ring Video Doorbell is introduced.
2017 Amazon’s Alexa Fund is identified as a Ring investor.
February 2018 Amazon announces its intention to acquire Ring. Media reports place the transaction at more than $1 billion.
April 12, 2018 The Amazon-Ring acquisition is completed.
2019 Amazon’s annual filing discloses approximately $839 million in cash consideration, net of cash acquired, for Ring.

Some basic functions, including live viewing for eligible devices, can work without a subscription. Recording, event history, certain smart alerts, monitoring, and other advanced features require an eligible Ring Protect plan or may depend on the device and country. Anyone buying a current Ring product should verify the exact plan requirements before purchase; the subscription terms are not a reliable way to describe what the 2013 DoorBot offered.

Why the Sharks’ decision is not a simple billion-dollar mistake

The popular lesson is that the Sharks “turned down a billion-dollar company.” That phrasing leaves out the most important variables.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  1. The company changed its name and positioning. DoorBot became Ring, with a clearer identity and a broader home-security proposition.
  2. The product developed. The business expanded from a connected doorbell into a family of security devices and services.
  3. Ring attracted additional financing. Outside investors, including Amazon’s Alexa Fund, supported the company before the acquisition.
  4. Distribution and scale mattered. A promising prototype and a television appearance are different from a business capable of producing, selling, and supporting products at scale.
  5. The original deal had complicated economics. O’Leary’s offer combined equity with a royalty. It is impossible to calculate a definite alternative payout without knowing what later financing, dilution, royalty payments, and exit terms would have looked like.

Even if the original investment would eventually have been valuable, no one can know from the televised terms exactly what O’Leary or Siminoff would have owned at the time of the acquisition. The company’s later financing and structure would have affected the result.

The practical business lesson

DoorBot’s story demonstrates the difference between exposure and execution. The show may have helped Ring gain customers at a critical moment. But the acquisition followed years of work: changing the brand, improving the product, expanding the category, securing financing, and finding strategic alignment with Amazon.

For founders, the useful takeaway is not “reject every television deal.” It is to evaluate what a proposed investment costs as well as what it provides. Equity, royalties, control, distribution, credibility, and speed can have very different long-term effects.

For viewers, the story is a reminder that a no-deal episode is only a snapshot. The company seen on television in 2013 was not identical to the company Amazon acquired in 2018. The later result was built after the cameras stopped rolling.

What happened to Jamie Siminoff?

Siminoff remained associated with Ring after its growth and acquisition. But the reported value of an acquisition is not the same as the founder’s personal proceeds or net worth. Without a current, authoritative disclosure of his finances, it is not responsible to describe him as a billionaire or assign him a specific payout.

The defensible conclusion is narrower: the company he founded and renamed Ring became valuable enough to attract Amazon, in a transaction reported at more than $1 billion and later recorded by Amazon at approximately $839 million in net cash consideration after acquired cash.
