Jane’s Addiction was performing at Leader Bank Pavilion in Boston, Massachusetts, on September 13, 2024, when Farrell moved toward Navarro during the set. Video recorded from the audience and circulated online shows Farrell aggressively confronting the guitarist and throwing a punch toward him.
Navarro appears to push or hold Farrell away while trying to make space. Crew members and the other musicians then moved in. The concert stopped abruptly rather than continuing through the rest of the scheduled performance.

The most defensible description is therefore that publicly circulated footage shows Farrell initiating an onstage confrontation and throwing a punch toward Navarro. The video does not, by itself, establish what caused the confrontation, what happened backstage afterward, or whether every later allegation about the band’s relationship is true.
What the concert footage shows—and what it does not
The Boston video is clear enough to establish the central public event: Farrell approached Navarro, physical contact followed, and the band and crew intervened. It is not a complete record of the evening. It cannot prove the musicians’ state of mind, settle the history of their working relationship, or independently verify claims about backstage events.
That distinction matters because later accounts described the incident in very different ways. It is inaccurate to present the Boston event as a mutually initiated fight without qualification. It is equally inaccurate to treat the concert clip as proof of every claim made in the lawsuits that followed.
The immediate response
Jane’s Addiction apologized to fans the following day and canceled its next scheduled performance in Bridgeport, Connecticut. On September 16, the band announced that the rest of its North American tour would be canceled and that the members would take time away. Refunds were announced for the canceled dates.

Farrell later apologized to Navarro, his bandmates, fans, family, and friends. He described his behavior during the Boston show as unacceptable or inexcusable. That apology supports responsibility for his conduct at the concert, but it does not resolve every disputed claim about what happened after the onstage intervention or about the band’s longer history.
Navarro, bassist Eric Avery, and drummer Stephen Perkins also issued a separate statement. They described the incident as part of what they called a continuing pattern of behavior and said Farrell was experiencing mental-health difficulties. They said they had no choice but to discontinue the tour.
That statement should be treated as the account of three band members, not as an independently established medical diagnosis. In the band’s December 2025 reconciliation statements, Navarro, Avery, and Perkins expressed regret for inaccurate statements they had made about Farrell’s mental health. Why the cancellation was so significant
The canceled dates were not an ordinary tour interruption. Jane’s Addiction had reunited its best-known four-member lineup: Farrell on vocals, Navarro on guitar, Avery on bass, and Perkins on drums. The group was also developing new material. The reunion therefore carried two possible futures: continuing to perform as the classic lineup and recording a new album. Once the tour collapsed, both prospects were placed in doubt.
The fallout was particularly consequential because the Boston concert was not an isolated scheduling problem. The public breakdown called the band’s ability to function as a unit into question. Farrell and entities associated with him filed a separate action or counterclaim presenting a substantially different account.
