NYT Connections #832 was published on Saturday, September 20, 2025. The groups are Car Brands, Bit of Sports Bar Fare, N.H.L. Team Member, and SKY _____.

Below, the 16 words appear first, followed by progressively stronger hints and then the complete solution. Stop before the spoiler section if you still want to solve the puzzle yourself.

Important transcription note: the supplied word list includes DRY, but the answer set requires FRY. Because FRY is the sports-bar answer and is the only word that makes all four groups work, “DRY” appears to be a transcription error in the archived list.

The 16 words in Connections #832

Here is the archived puzzle grid, with the apparent DRY/FRY transcription issue noted above:

DUCK · WING · ROCKET · STAR

LARK · DIP · DODGE · SENATOR

RAM · DIVE · FRY · FORD

CHIP · SCRAPER · LINCOLN · FLYER

Hints for Connections #832

Try these in order. The first hint for each group is deliberately broad; later hints give away more.

Yellow group hint

Start your engines. Think of automobile manufacturers rather than parts, models, or driving actions.

Green group hint

Think about something served as a small portion or individual item at a sports bar.

Blue group hint

It is hockey time. Look for singular words that appear in National Hockey League team names.

Purple group hint

Look up. Each answer completes the phrase “SKY ____.”

One-word nudges

If the group-level hints are not enough, these anchors point toward one member of each category:

  • Yellow: LINCOLN
  • Green: CHIP
  • Blue: ROCKET
  • Purple: SENATOR

Spoilers: Connections #832 answers

Warning: the complete groups and explanations are below.

Yellow: Car Brands

DODGE, FORD, LINCOLN, RAM

All four are automobile brands or marque names. This is the most direct group on the board, although DODGE can also look like an action and RAM can suggest an animal or computer memory.

Green: Bit of Sports Bar Fare

CHIP, DIP, FRY, WING

These words describe small portions or familiar items associated with sports-bar food: chips, dip, fries, and wings. The word WING is a useful decoy because it can also suggest sports terminology, while CHIP and DIP can be read as verbs rather than food.

Blue: N.H.L. Team Member

DUCK, FLYER, SENATOR, STAR

These are the singular forms represented in NHL franchise names:

  • DUCK — Anaheim Ducks
  • FLYER — Philadelphia Flyers
  • SENATOR — Ottawa Senators
  • STAR — Dallas Stars

The singular wording is the main trap. Hockey fans generally know the team names in their plural forms, but the grid uses one member of each group: one duck, one flyer, one senator, and one star.

Purple: SKY _____

DIVE, LARK, ROCKET, SCRAPER

Each word forms a familiar compound or phrase with sky:

  • sky dive or skydiving
  • skylark
  • skyrocket
  • skyscraper

This is the most abstract group. The words do not share a clear subject category on their own; they become a set only when the common word SKY is supplied.

Why this puzzle is tricky

Several words create tempting but incomplete patterns. DUCK, DIP, DODGE, and DIVE can all suggest evasive movements, but they are not a group. Once DODGE is placed with the car brands and DIP with the food, that apparent pattern falls apart.

ROCKET and STAR may initially point toward space or astronomy. In the final solution, ROCKET belongs with the SKY compounds, while STAR is an NHL reference. WING also has a sports-related meaning, but here it is food.

The word-list discrepancy deserves separate attention. A board containing DRY cannot produce the published four-word food group, whereas FRY completes it naturally. The four answer groups account for every other entry exactly, so the intended green-group word is FRY.

A practical solving order

  1. Remove the car brands first: DODGE, FORD, LINCOLN, and RAM are the cleanest category.
  2. Find the food: CHIP, DIP, FRY, and WING describe sports-bar fare.
  3. Reconsider the unusual nouns: DUCK, FLYER, SENATOR, and STAR are singular references to NHL team names.
  4. Use the remaining words with SKY: DIVE, LARK, ROCKET, and SCRAPER complete the final category.

If you enjoy the daily puzzle format but want something physical, Puzzle Mania: Wordle, Connections, Spelling Bee, Minis and More is a 224-page hardcover collection from The New York Times Games and Joel Fagliano. Frequently Asked Questions

What date was NYT Connections #832?

Connections #832 was the Saturday, September 20, 2025 puzzle. It should not be confused with a puzzle dated September 20, 2026.

What is the likely DRY/FRY error in the archived word list?

The answer group is CHIP, DIP, FRY, and WING. Since FRY is absent from the supplied 16-word transcription and DRY appears instead, DRY is likely a transcription error. DRY does not complete any of the four reported categories.

Why are DUCK, FLYER, SENATOR, and STAR grouped together?

They are singular versions of words in NHL team names: the Anaheim Ducks, Philadelphia Flyers, Ottawa Senators, and Dallas Stars.
