The project’s current notice says development is suspended because changes to the Netflix website have prevented proper playback. When playback does work, some systems may be limited to SD quality.
Important update — August 12, 2026: This guide retains the original 2025 topic, but the add-on’s current status has changed. Treat the procedure below as a best-effort community installation path, not a dependable way to watch Netflix. For reliable HD or 4K viewing, use Netflix’s official app on a supported device.
What you are actually installing
Kodi does not include Netflix by default. Netflix is also not available through Kodi’s official add-on repository. The established community option is CastagnaIT’s Netflix add-on project, installed through the separate CastagnaIT third-party repository.
CastagnaIT is not commissioned, supported, or endorsed by Netflix. Netflix’s own supported-device documentation lists smart TVs, streaming players, game consoles, mobile devices, and computers using supported browsers or apps, but it does not list Kodi as an officially supported Netflix client. Installing the add-on therefore involves two separate risks: it may no longer play content, and it is software installed from outside Kodi’s trusted default repository.

What you need
- A working Netflix account and subscription. The add-on does not provide Netflix access or bypass the need for an account.
- Kodi from the official source. Download it from the Kodi Foundation’s official downloads page, not from a repackaged “fully loaded” build.
- A stable Kodi release that matches the add-on’s compatibility documentation. CastagnaIT documents release folders for Kodi 19, 20, 21, and 22, but compatibility can change. Use the stable Kodi version available for your operating system unless you specifically need a prerelease build. Kodi described Kodi 22 as a prerelease beta in June 2026, so it should not be installed merely to try to solve a Netflix problem.
- A compatible device and DRM environment. Android devices in particular can differ because Netflix certification, Widevine security level, hardware decoding, and HDCP support affect playback.
- Permission to install third-party software. Kodi’s Unknown sources setting is required for ZIP files and repositories outside the official Kodi repository.
How to install Netflix on Kodi
The menu names below describe Kodi’s standard interface. A different skin or operating system may move the same commands slightly, but the sequence remains the same.

Install Kodi from the official download page
Download the installer for your operating system from kodi.tv/download and complete the normal installation. Avoid unofficial Kodi builds, preconfigured boxes, and installers that promise free Netflix or dozens of bundled services. They can include altered software, unwanted add-ons, or credentials-stealing components.

Enable Unknown sources
In Kodi, open Settings → System → Add-ons. Turn on Unknown sources and accept Kodi’s warning.

Get the CastagnaIT repository ZIP from the project’s own instructions
Open the CastagnaIT Netflix project or repository page and follow its current installation instructions. The project identifies the repository ZIP as
repository.castagnait-2.0.1.zip; the filename or release may change, so use the version currently identified by the project rather than an old mirror.There are two practical ways to make the ZIP available to Kodi:

- Download it to the Kodi device: Use the project’s official GitHub or CastagnaIT-hosted repository source, download the repository ZIP, and remember the folder where the browser saved it.
- Add the repository source in Kodi: Open Settings → File manager → Add source, enter the source address shown in the CastagnaIT project’s current instructions, and give the source a name such as
CastagnaIT.
Do not substitute a ZIP from a forum, file-hosting site, social-media post, or “patched Kodi” download page. The add-on’s present playback problems are not a reason to trust an unverified replacement.

Install the repository ZIP
Return to Kodi’s home screen and open Add-ons → Add-on browser. Depending on the skin, the Add-on browser is represented by an open-box icon. Choose Install from zip file, select the folder or source you used in the previous step, and choose the CastagnaIT repository ZIP.
Wait for Kodi to display a notification confirming that the repository was installed. If Kodi reports that the ZIP is invalid or cannot connect, delete the incomplete download and obtain the current ZIP again from the project’s stated source. Do not keep trying random versions.

Install the Netflix video add-on
From the same Add-on browser, choose Install from repository. Select CastagnaIT Repository, open Video add-ons, choose Netflix, and select Install.
Kodi may show required dependencies. Review the prompts and use only the dependencies supplied through the repository or documented by the project. Do not download DRM components or modified add-ons from unrelated websites.

Open Netflix and sign in
After installation, open the Netflix add-on from Add-ons → Video add-ons → Netflix. Sign in with your own Netflix credentials. This does not convert Kodi into an officially supported Netflix client, and it does not guarantee that authentication or playback will continue to work after Netflix changes its service.
For some login problems, the CastagnaIT project documents an authentication-key method as an alternative. Treat that as a project-specific workaround, not an official Netflix recovery method. Read the project’s current instructions carefully, never submit your credentials to an unknown service, and do not assume that an authentication workaround will remain functional.

Test playback without assuming HD or 4K
Choose a title and check whether playback starts, audio works, subtitles appear, and the picture quality is acceptable. A successful sign-in does not prove that video playback will work. Because the project currently reports suspended development and unreliable playback, a failed test may reflect an incompatibility with Netflix rather than a mistake in your Kodi settings.
Why Netflix may be limited to SD—or fail completely
Netflix playback is more than a video-stream URL. The device, operating system, DRM implementation, hardware decoding, Netflix certification, and display-protection chain all matter.

In other words, an Android box advertised as “4K” is not automatically capable of 4K Netflix through Kodi. The device may lack Widevine L1, Netflix certification, HDCP 2.2 support, or a compatible playback path. Even a device that worked previously can stop working when Netflix changes its website or DRM requirements.
Troubleshooting
The Netflix add-on is missing
Netflix will not normally appear if you search only Kodi’s official repository. Confirm that CastagnaIT Repository was installed successfully, then use Add-ons → Add-on browser → Install from repository. Select the CastagnaIT repository and look under Video add-ons.
The CastagnaIT repository does not appear
Check that you installed the repository ZIP rather than the Netflix add-on ZIP, and wait for Kodi’s installation confirmation. If the ZIP installation failed, download the current file again from the project’s own instructions. A wrong, incomplete, or obsolete ZIP can install nothing or target a different Kodi version.
Login fails, but Netflix works in a browser
First verify the account credentials at Netflix’s official website. If the account works there, the failure is likely an add-on compatibility or authentication issue rather than a bad password. Review the current CastagnaIT documentation for its authentication-key alternative, but remember that this is unofficial and may stop working.

This is currently the most likely problem. The project explicitly attributes the situation to changes on the Netflix website and says development has been suspended. Reinstalling Kodi repeatedly, changing random settings, or installing a “fixed” ZIP from an unknown source is unlikely to provide a safe, lasting solution.

The dependable recovery is to use Netflix’s official app on a supported device. Keep Kodi and the operating system updated for security, but do not remain on vulnerable old software solely because an unofficial add-on once worked there.
Video quality is poor
SD quality may be a platform or DRM limitation rather than a Kodi setting. The project warns that some systems can play only in SD and that higher resolutions depend on the device, operating system, hardware decoding, Netflix certification, Widevine level, and HDCP hardware.
Changing the television’s output resolution cannot create a higher-quality Netflix stream. If the official Netflix app on the same device delivers better quality, the limitation is likely in the Kodi add-on or its playback path.

Do I need a VPN?
No authoritative source reviewed for this guide establishes that a VPN is required to install or use the add-on. Do not use a VPN or other tool to bypass geographic restrictions, and do not use modified software to defeat DRM or content protections. Those actions can conflict with Netflix’s Terms of Use and are outside the safe installation steps described here.

- Use Kodi from the official Kodi download page.
- Use only the CastagnaIT project’s stated GitHub or CastagnaIT-hosted repository source.
- Do not install repacked Kodi builds, stolen credentials, “free Netflix” packages, or patched ZIP files from unknown distributors.
- Never send your Netflix password or authentication data to a random website offering to “activate” the add-on.
- Keep Kodi, the operating system, and the device’s firmware updated.
- After installing the repository, return to Settings → System → Add-ons and turn Unknown sources off if you do not need to install other third-party software.
- Remember that Kodi warns third-party add-ons can access personal data on the device and can cause unwanted behavior or damage.
- Do not attempt to circumvent Netflix’s content protections, reverse-engineer the service, manipulate playback restrictions, or use another person’s credentials.
The reliable alternative: Netflix’s official app
If the goal is simply to watch Netflix, use the official Netflix app on a supported smart TV, streaming player, game console, phone, tablet, or computer. Netflix’s supported-device information includes platforms such as Amazon Fire TV and Fire TV Stick, Apple TV, Chromecast, Roku, smart-TV systems, game consoles, mobile devices, supported web browsers, and the Windows app. Availability can vary by country, model, operating-system version, and Netflix’s current device support.
This option will not place Netflix inside a Kodi library in the same way as an add-on. It does, however, avoid the central problem with the CastagnaIT route: Kodi is not an officially supported Netflix playback platform, and the community add-on currently has no dependable playback promise.
Optional hardware for a living-room setup
If you want one device for Kodi plus a dependable Netflix experience, an NVIDIA Shield TV Pro can be a reasonable dedicated streaming-device option to investigate. The CastagnaIT community compatibility list reports certain Shield TV models as capable of higher-resolution playback, while Netflix officially supports compatible streaming-device platforms. Neither fact guarantees that the unofficial Kodi add-on will work or provide 1080p or 4K.

Similarly, an HDMI cable, Ethernet cable, or replacement media remote may help with a particular living-room setup, but none is required to install the add-on and none can solve an unsupported Netflix integration.
Frequently Asked Questions
Is Netflix officially supported on Kodi?
No. Netflix is not in Kodi’s official repository, and Netflix’s supported-device documentation does not list Kodi as an officially supported Netflix client. The CastagnaIT add-on is a third-party community project.
Can I watch Netflix in 4K through Kodi?
