President Donald Trump announced the five recipients of the 2025 Kennedy Center Honors on August 13, 2025: George Strait, Sylvester Stallone, Gloria Gaynor, Michael Crawford, and KISS. The announcement came after Trump had taken control of the Kennedy Center’s board earlier in the year, and he said he was “about 98 percent involved” in choosing the class.
The honorees represent country music, film, disco, musical theater, and theatrical rock. Their artistic achievements independently fit the Honors’ lifetime-contribution tradition, while Trump’s unusually prominent role in the selection made the 2025 class institutionally and politically significant.
The five 2025 Kennedy Center Honorees
| Honoree | Field | Achievement most associated with the selection |
|---|---|---|
| George Strait | Country music | A decades-long recording career, 60 No. 1 hits, and an enduring influence on modern country music |
| Sylvester Stallone | Film | Writing, acting, directing, and producing films including Rocky and Rambo |
| Gloria Gaynor | Popular music | The lasting cultural impact of “I Will Survive” and a later Grammy-winning gospel career |
| Michael Crawford | Musical theater | Originating the title role in The Phantom of the Opera on Broadway |
| KISS | Rock music | Transforming concert rock through makeup, costumes, alter egos, theatrical staging, and global reach |
The class was the 48th annual group of Kennedy Center Honorees. The recipients were honorees, not nominees: the announcement identified them as the artists and group selected for recognition.
Why George Strait was chosen
George Strait was honored for more than four decades of influence at the center of country music. The White House described him as the “King of Country” and cited more than 120 million records sold worldwide, 60 No. 1 hits, and 33 platinum-certified albums.

Strait’s longevity is as important as his sales figures. He has been credited with placing a Top 10 hit on the country charts every year for more than three decades, an unusually sustained level of success in a genre that has changed substantially during his career. His straightforward vocal style and traditional country repertoire also helped keep older country conventions commercially prominent as the mainstream shifted.
The selection was not presented solely as a commercial achievement. Strait has supported military and children’s causes, including the Jenifer Strait Memorial Foundation. He has also partnered in efforts to provide mortgage-free homes to wounded veterans. His selection therefore combined country music’s broad cultural influence with a long-running record of philanthropy outside the studio and stage.
Why Sylvester Stallone was chosen
Sylvester Stallone’s recognition reflects a six-decade career in which he worked as a screenwriter, actor, director, and producer. He became one of the defining figures in American popular cinema through characters such as Rocky Balboa and John Rambo.
The cultural argument for Stallone begins with Rocky. The character’s struggle, discipline, and refusal to accept defeat made Stallone an international symbol of the determined underdog. The later Creed films extended the life of the Rocky story and connected Stallone’s original work with a new generation of performers and audiences.

The White House described Stallone as a three-time Academy Award nominee and a Golden Globe winner, and said films from his career had grossed more than $7.5 billion worldwide. Those accomplishments place him within the Honors’ tradition of recognizing artists whose work has shaped mass culture over a lifetime.
There was also personal political context around the selection. The Washington Post reported that Stallone had praised Trump as a “second George Washington” at a 2024 Mar-a-Lago event. That association is relevant because Trump said he personally reviewed potential honorees, but it does not by itself establish that political loyalty was the reason Stallone received the honor. His documented film career independently supplies a conventional artistic basis for the award.
Why Gloria Gaynor was chosen
Gloria Gaynor was recognized as one of the defining voices of the disco era and for the extraordinary afterlife of her signature song, “I Will Survive.” Released in 1978, the song became an international anthem of resilience and continued to appear in films, television, advertising, sporting events, and popular culture long after the height of disco.

“I Will Survive” won the 1980 Grammy Award for Best Disco Recording and was later inducted into the National Recording Registry. That recognition reflects the song’s importance beyond its original commercial moment: it became a durable piece of American recorded culture and a song repeatedly reinterpreted by later generations.

Gaynor’s career also continued beyond disco. She won a second Grammy in 2020 for Testimony, a gospel album. That later achievement gave the selection a broader narrative, linking her breakthrough as a disco singer with decades of continued recording and artistic development.
Why Michael Crawford was chosen
Michael Crawford represents the musical-theater tradition within the 2025 class. He made his Broadway debut in 1967 and became internationally known for originating the title role in Andrew Lloyd Webber’s The Phantom of the Opera.
Crawford’s performance as the Phantom earned him the Tony Award for Best Actor in a Musical. The role required a combination of acting, singing, emotional intensity, and physical command, and Crawford’s interpretation became the reference point for audiences encountering the musical during its worldwide expansion.
His selection broadened the class beyond American popular music and Hollywood. It also reflected the Kennedy Center Honors’ cross-disciplinary purpose: recognizing a lifetime of achievement in performance rather than limiting the award to one commercial genre or medium.
Why KISS was chosen
KISS was honored for reshaping theatrical rock and turning a concert into a highly recognizable visual spectacle. Founded in New York in 1973 by Paul Stanley, Gene Simmons, Ace Frehley, and Peter Criss, the band built its identity around face makeup, elaborate costumes, alter egos, pyrotechnics, stage effects, and larger-than-life performances.
The White House cited more than 100 million records sold worldwide and 30 gold albums, as well as the band’s induction into the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame. Those numbers explain the group’s commercial reach, but KISS’s influence cannot be measured by recordings alone. Its visual language helped establish the idea that a rock act could function as music, theater, branding, and character-driven entertainment at the same time.

KISS’s stage presentation also made the band unusually accessible to audiences who encountered its imagery before hearing its music. The Kennedy Center Honors traditionally recognize lifetime contributions to American culture through the performing arts. The established process has included recommendations from Kennedy Center trustees, members of the artistic community, previous honorees, and the public. The board’s executive committee then confirms the selections. Excellence is the central standard; the Honors do not operate as a fixed quota system requiring a particular number of musicians, actors, or other categories.
The 2025 process was publicly presented as much more directly presidential. Trump announced the recipients himself from the Kennedy Center’s Hall of Nations and said he was “about 98 percent involved” in choosing them. He said the candidates had come through him and that he had reviewed and rejected potential honorees.
That statement should be understood as Trump’s characterization of his involvement, not as independently documented proof that he formally made every decision alone. The public record supports the conclusion that he played an unusually prominent role; it does not establish that each artist was chosen exclusively because of a political relationship.
The change mattered because the announcement followed Trump’s takeover of the Kennedy Center board earlier in 2025. Trump had also advocated a more conservative direction for the institution and discussed broadening the range of people considered for recognition. As a result, the 2025 class became part of a larger debate about whether the Kennedy Center should remain primarily an arts institution operating through its established procedures or adopt a more overtly presidential vision.

The honorees’ artistic credentials and the politics of the selection are separate questions. Strait’s country-music career, Stallone’s film work, Gaynor’s enduring recording legacy, Crawford’s theater achievement, and KISS’s influence on rock all fit the broad purpose of a lifetime cultural honor.
What was unusual was the way the choices were made public and framed. Presidents have traditionally attended or participated in Kennedy Center Honors events, but Trump announced that he would host the ceremony himself. His claimed level of involvement and his control of the institution’s board made the 2025 event a test of how much the Honors’ identity would be shaped by the sitting president.

It would be too broad to describe the class as selected solely for political reasons. A more precise description is that the 2025 honorees had substantial, independently recognizable artistic achievements, while the selection process and presidential presentation were unusually personal and politically visible.

The 2025 ceremony was scheduled for December as the 48th annual Kennedy Center Honors event, with CBS and Paramount+ listed as the broadcast and streaming outlets. Trump later hosted the ceremony, breaking with the normal practice in which presidents might attend or participate without serving as the event’s host.
On December 6, 2025, Trump also presented the honorees with their medals at an Oval Office ceremony, according to reporting from CBS and the Associated Press. The recipients present in that report were Stallone, Gaynor, Strait, KISS, and Crawford.
Because streaming catalogs, regional rights, and replay windows can change, viewers seeking the program should check current CBS and Paramount+ listings for their location rather than assume that the original broadcast remains available on demand.

What the selections say about the Kennedy Center Honors
The 2025 class covered several forms of mass entertainment while preserving the Honors’ emphasis on sustained influence. Strait and Gaynor represented recording careers that reached far beyond a single hit or era. Stallone represented the ability of film characters and stories to become global cultural symbols. Crawford represented the international reach of musical theater, and KISS represented the fusion of music with spectacle and visual identity.

The awards are not simply a ranking of technical achievement. They are a statement about which artists and cultural forms an institution wants to place in the national record—and, in 2025, about how much that statement would be guided by the president who controlled the institution and presented the class.
