Blue Bloods was not revived. CBS concluded the original New York police drama with its 14th and final season on December 13, 2024. But the franchise has returned in a new form: Boston Blue, a spin-off led by Donnie Wahlberg as Danny Reagan, moves the story from the NYPD to Boston and introduces an entirely new police-and-politics family. CBS has renewed Boston Blue for a second season in 2026–27.
Why the end of Blue Bloods felt premature
By the time Blue Bloods ended, it was no longer simply another procedural. The CBS drama had become a Friday-night institution built around the Reagan family: police commissioner Frank Reagan, detective Danny Reagan, prosecutor Erin Reagan, and the younger members of a family whose dinner-table arguments were as important to the format as its investigations.
CBS announced in March 2023 that the series would end with a two-part 14th and final season. The network’s own figures made the decision surprising. CBS described Blue Bloods as Friday’s No. 1 primetime program and the No. 3 broadcast drama during the 2022–23 season, with an average of 9.54 million viewers. When live viewing was combined with up to 35 days of multiplatform viewing, CBS said the total exceeded 11 million viewers per episode.
The network also said the show had held the No. 1 position in the 10 p.m. Friday time slot since its premiere in 2010 and ranked among Paramount+’s top 10 series by minutes viewed at the time. In other words, the available official evidence does not point to a simple ratings collapse. “Cancelled too soon” is an editorial judgment, not CBS’s terminology, but it reflects why many viewers objected: the series still had a substantial audience and remained useful to CBS both on broadcast television and in streaming.
#1 Best Overall
CBS did not identify one definitive reason for ending the show. Reports about cast salaries, production expenses, the economics of a 14-season production, or a desire to reach younger viewers should therefore be treated as secondary analysis—not as a single officially confirmed explanation.
When did Blue Bloods end?
The original series finale, titled “End of Tour,” aired on December 13, 2024. CBS’s finale materials identified the completed drama as a 14-season series with 293 episodes.
That ending matters because Boston Blue is not a continuation of the entire Reagan ensemble. There is no new season of the original show set in New York. Instead, CBS has extended the fictional universe through one established character and a new group of people in a different city.
What is Boston Blue about?
Boston Blue follows Danny Reagan after he leaves the New York Police Department context and takes a position with the Boston Police Department. He is partnered with Detective Lena Silver, played by Sonequa Martin-Green.

The spin-off’s central family is the Boston Silver family:
- Mae Silver, played by Gloria Reuben, is Boston’s district attorney.
- Sarah Silver, played by Maggie Lawson, is Boston’s police superintendent.
- Jonah Silver, played by Marcus Scribner, is a rookie police officer.
- Reverend Edwin Peters, played by Ernie Hudson, is part of the new family circle.
- Sean Reagan, Danny’s younger son, played by Mika Amonson, also begins a career in Boston.
This setup preserves some of the original show’s defining ingredients—family loyalty, competing views of law enforcement, and conflict between professional duty and personal responsibility—without pretending that Boston is simply a new backdrop for the old series. The Silver family gives the spin-off its own institutional relationships and generational tensions, while Danny provides the most direct link to Blue Bloods.
When did Boston Blue premiere?
CBS scheduled the series premiere for Friday, October 17, 2025, at 10:00 p.m. Eastern/Pacific. The series is produced by CBS Studios and executive produced by Brandon Sonnier, Brandon Margolis, Donnie Wahlberg, Jerry Bruckheimer, and KristieAnne Reed.
The scheduling choice also makes the connection clear. Blue Bloods had been a long-running Friday-night anchor for CBS, and Boston Blue occupies the same broad procedural territory rather than attempting to reinvent the franchise as a limited series or a completely unrelated crime drama.

Blue Bloods remains available through Paramount+ in the United States, and CBS’s current show information identifies the original series as streaming. That gives the concluded drama a continuing afterlife: viewers can watch the Reagan family’s full run even though no 15th season is coming.
Boston Blue is also tied to Paramount+. CBS’s current program information says the spin-off streams live and on demand for Premium subscribers, while Essential subscribers can watch it on demand the day after broadcast.
Streaming catalogs, plan names, availability, and release windows can change. Those tier details should be checked on Paramount+ before subscribing, particularly if same-night viewing matters to you. The practical distinction is straightforward: the original Blue Bloods is a completed library title, while Boston Blue is the current series carrying the franchise forward.
For viewers who prefer owning a season rather than depending on a changing catalog, Blue Bloods: The 13th Season DVD is a physical-media option worth searching for. Availability, seller, price, and eligibility can change, so treat it as a marketplace search rather than a guaranteed in-stock recommendation.

Yes. CBS ordered Boston Blue for a second season for the 2026–27 season on December 3, 2025.
Rank #4
In announcing the renewal, CBS reported that the series averaged approximately 8 million viewers in Nielsen live-plus-seven-day multiplatform ratings and consistently won its Friday 10 p.m. time period. CBS also reported that Boston Blue’s streaming audience was 87% higher than Blue Bloods’ streaming performance in the comparable prior fall period.
That 87% figure needs to be read precisely. It is a CBS-reported comparison using Nielsen methodology and a defined measurement window. It does not establish that Boston Blue is universally more popular than the original series, nor does it compare every possible audience measure. It does show that CBS believes the new drama is performing strongly enough across broadcast and streaming to justify another season.

The franchise’s return is best understood as a continuation of its identity, not a resurrection of the original program. Danny Reagan is back, but the New York ensemble and the 293-episode run remain finished. The story has moved to Boston, the main family has changed from the Reagans to the Silvers, and the new series must establish its own balance between police cases and family drama.

Longtime viewers have a recognizable entry point through Danny, while new viewers can meet the Silver family without needing to know every relationship from 14 seasons of Blue Bloods. It also allows CBS to preserve the franchise’s familiar themes—law enforcement, public service, family disagreement, and moral compromise—without claiming that the original finale never happened.

For fans disappointed by the early ending, the result is therefore a partial answer rather than the return they originally wanted. Blue Bloods is still over. Its characters and tone, however, have proved valuable enough to support a new Boston-based drama, and CBS’s second-season order suggests that this is more than a one-season experiment.
