The Marvels is a 2023 Marvel Studios team-up directed by Nia DaCosta. It brings together Carol Danvers/Captain Marvel, Monica Rambeau, and Kamala Khan/Ms. Marvel, whose powers become mysteriously linked: whenever two or more of them use their abilities at the same time, they can suddenly swap locations. The result is a compact, comedic cosmic adventure about three heroes learning to work as a team while confronting Dar-Benn, a Kree revolutionary threatening several worlds.
The film was released in U.S. theaters on November 10, 2023. It runs for approximately 105 minutes and was released with a PG-13 rating in the United States; runtime and rating details can vary by edition or territory.

What is The Marvels about?
The Marvels continues Carol Danvers’s story after Captain Marvel and places her alongside two characters introduced elsewhere in the Marvel Cinematic Universe: Monica Rambeau, the astronaut and energy-powered hero from WandaVision, and Kamala Khan, the teenage Jersey City superhero from the Disney+ series Ms. Marvel.
Carol has reclaimed the Captain Marvel identity, but her earlier conflict with the Kree continues to affect the wider universe. When an unusual wormhole anomaly connects Carol’s activities with Monica and Kamala, their powers become entangled. The three heroes begin switching places whenever they use their abilities simultaneously. A fight in space, a rescue in Jersey City, and an operation aboard a space station can therefore become one chaotic sequence in which each hero must understand what the others are about to do.

That power-swapping mechanism is more than a visual gimmick. It is the film’s central storytelling device: the heroes cannot succeed through individual strength alone. They must develop timing, trust, and communication while facing a threat that is larger than any one of them.
The main characters and cast
| Character | Actor | Role in the film |
|---|---|---|
| Carol Danvers/Captain Marvel | Brie Larson | A powerful cosmic hero dealing with the consequences of her past decisions and the responsibilities of leadership. |
| Monica Rambeau | Teyonah Parris | An astronaut and energy-powered hero whose history with Carol gives the team its most complicated personal relationship. |
| Kamala Khan/Ms. Marvel | Iman Vellani | A teenage superhero and Captain Marvel admirer who is experiencing the reality of working beside her idol. |
| Dar-Benn | Zawe Ashton | A Kree revolutionary whose attempt to restore her homeworld drives the central conflict. |
| Nick Fury | Samuel L. Jackson | A returning MCU character connected to the space-based S.A.B.E.R. operation. |
The ensemble’s strongest dramatic and comic dynamic comes from Larson, Parris, and Vellani. Carol is experienced but isolated, Monica is capable but carrying unresolved history with Carol, and Kamala brings youthful enthusiasm along with a fan’s expectations of what a superhero partnership should look like. Their contrasting points of view give the film its emotional structure.
The supporting cast includes Gary Lewis, Park Seo-joon, Zenobia Shroff, Mohan Kapur, and Saagar Shaikh, among others.
Who is the villain, Dar-Benn?
Dar-Benn is a Kree revolutionary confronting the destruction and instability of Hala, the Kree homeworld. She uses powerful technology to tear open jump points and extract resources from other planets. Her objective is connected to repairing Hala, but the method places other worlds in danger.
This makes the conflict more complicated than a simple invasion plot. Dar-Benn’s actions grow out of a political and humanitarian crisis, while Carol must confront the consequences of her own earlier involvement with the Kree. The film therefore connects its cosmic spectacle to questions of responsibility: having the power to intervene does not automatically mean that an intervention has produced a just or stable result.
Why the power-swapping idea matters
In many superhero team-ups, characters are assembled and then fight side by side using separate abilities. The Marvels takes the opposite approach. Its heroes’ powers interfere with one another, making coordination a physical problem.
- It creates action-comedy. A character can begin an attack in one location and finish somewhere completely different.
- It makes teamwork visible. The heroes must learn each other’s timing instead of simply adding their powers together.
- It exposes their differences. Carol’s experience, Monica’s technical discipline, and Kamala’s improvisational energy do not naturally fit at first.
- It supports the film’s theme. The trio becomes effective only after they stop treating collaboration as a limitation.
The device also gives the film a more intimate structure than its interplanetary stakes might suggest. The story is about saving worlds, but many of its most memorable problems are practical: who acts first, who communicates clearly, and whether one hero trusts another enough to follow a plan.

MCU connections: what should you watch first?
You can follow the broad premise of The Marvels without watching every MCU production, but three earlier stories provide the most important character context.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute2Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors3Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches1. Captain Marvel (2019)
This is the most important preparation for Carol Danvers. It establishes her powers, her Captain Marvel identity, her connection to the Kree, and the history that informs the film’s political conflict. It also helps explain why Carol’s reputation and past decisions matter to the story.
Readers building a physical MCU collection may want to look for the Captain Marvel Blu-ray as a companion to the film. Edition, region, price, and stock should be checked before purchase.
2. WandaVision (2021)
WandaVision introduces the adult Monica Rambeau played by Teyonah Parris. It shows Monica’s professional abilities, her connection to aerospace work, and the personal history that makes her relationship with Carol more than a standard superhero alliance.
3. Ms. Marvel (2022)
Ms. Marvel introduces Kamala Khan, her family, her Jersey City life, and her admiration for Captain Marvel. Watching it first makes Kamala’s excitement about meeting Carol—and her development during the team-up—much easier to understand. It also establishes the family members who continue into The Marvels.

Avengers: Endgame is useful wider MCU background for Carol’s place among Earth’s heroes, but it is not as essential as Captain Marvel, WandaVision, and Ms. Marvel for understanding this film’s immediate relationships.
The film’s themes
Learning interdependence
The three heroes begin with different levels of experience and confidence. Kamala is still learning what kind of hero she wants to be, Monica is trying to prove herself in a professional and personal sense, and Carol is accustomed to operating alone. The power entanglement forces them to accept that independence is not always the same thing as leadership.
Legacy and mentorship
Kamala’s admiration for Captain Marvel gives the film a natural generational contrast. Carol is not simply a flawless role model, however. Kamala’s idealized image of her must meet the more complicated person behind the symbol. The film uses their relationship to ask what happens when a fan meets a hero and discovers that heroism involves mistakes as well as victories.

Repairing the damage caused by leadership
Carol’s past choices have consequences beyond her own story. Her extraordinary abilities cannot erase those consequences, and the film asks her to approach leadership as an act of accountability rather than authority alone.

The Marvels is a notable MCU experiment because its three central heroes come from different parts of the franchise: one from a theatrical feature, one from a Disney+ series, and one from a separate Disney+ series who was also previously connected to another MCU story. That makes the film rewarding for viewers who followed those projects, while also creating a higher entry barrier for anyone expecting a self-contained sequel.
Tone and style
The Marvels combines cosmic action with domestic comedy, ensemble banter, and deliberately playful sequences. Its scale shifts rapidly between space operations, family interactions, superhero set pieces, and lighter character moments. Whether that mixture works will depend on a viewer’s tolerance for abrupt tonal changes, but the contrast is intentional: the film wants the heroes to feel like people who must learn to share a mission, not just icons placed together for a large battle.
Its relatively compact runtime also gives the film a brisk, concentrated shape compared with some longer superhero releases. The trade-off is that the story moves quickly through multiple planets, relationships, and pieces of MCU history.

The resolution requires more than defeating Dar-Benn in combat. Monica ultimately sacrifices herself to close the dimensional rupture and is left in another reality. The ending also points toward future MCU stories, including a mid-credits sequence involving Kamala and a new team-building possibility. Those scenes are best understood as franchise setup rather than a complete resolution to every character’s future.
Where to watch The Marvels
The film opened in U.S. theaters on November 10, 2023. Marvel announced digital availability through retailers including Prime Video, Apple TV, and Vudu beginning January 16, 2024, followed by its Disney+ premiere on February 7, 2024.
Those are historical release dates, not a guarantee of current availability. Streaming catalogs, digital storefronts, subscription terms, and regional rights can change. Before recommending a current service, check the reader’s country and the live catalog. If it is available in the reader’s territory, watch The Marvels on Disney+ is the most direct streaming route associated with the film’s official rollout.
Physical editions and collector options
The Marvels received a U.S. physical-media release on February 13, 2024, including 4K Ultra HD, Blu-ray, and DVD formats. Promotional materials identified a 4K UHD/Blu-ray/digital-code edition, a Blu-ray combo pack, and a DVD edition.
Collectors who want a physical copy can look for The Marvels Blu-ray, the The Marvels 4K UHD edition, or the DVD. Prices, seller identity, stock, included discs, digital-code terms, and regional compatibility are volatile, so verify the exact listing before buying. A 4K label identifies the format; it is not, by itself, a substitute for an independent assessment of picture or audio quality.
The film also has an original motion-picture soundtrack by composer Laura Karpman, released in November 2023. Availability and format should be checked separately from the film’s home-video editions.

Production and behind-the-scenes material
Nia DaCosta directed The Marvels. Marvel credits Megan McDonnell, DaCosta, Elissa Karasik, and Zeb Wells as writers, with Kevin Feige as producer. The executive producers are Louis D’Esposito, Victoria Alonso, Mary Livanos, and Matthew Jenkins.
For viewers interested in how the film was made, Disney+ promoted Assembled: The Making of The Marvels. The behind-the-scenes special covers cast and crew experiences, action choreography, alien life forms, elaborate sets, dance-party material, and the production’s kitten-related sequences. It is a production companion rather than independent evidence about the film’s quality or reception.

Reception and box-office context
The Marvels opened to approximately $47 million domestically in its first weekend, according to reporting based on Comscore data. At that time, the figure was described as the lowest domestic opening weekend in MCU franchise history. That is a historical box-office comparison, not a current ranking.
Commercial performance should be kept separate from critical judgment. A useful assessment of the film also considers its compact ensemble format, its reliance on two Disney+ series, its power-swapping action concept, and the chemistry among Larson, Parris, and Vellani. It is reasonable to discuss whether those elements make the film accessible or demanding, but it would be too strong to present continuity requirements or tonal choices as proven causes of its box-office result.
Is The Marvels a documentary?
No. The Marvels is a scripted Marvel Studios superhero feature, not a documentary. It may interest documentary and production-feature viewers because of the companion special Assembled: The Making of The Marvels, which focuses on the film’s cast, crew, sets, choreography, and visual production.

The Marvels is best understood as a compact MCU ensemble film rather than a conventional Captain Marvel sequel.
