Freely is a UK television platform that delivers live streamed channels and broadcaster catch-up services through broadband, bringing them together in a traditional TV-guide interface. It is operated by Everyone TV and was launched on 30 April 2024 with the backing of the BBC, ITV, Channel 4 and Channel 5. STV and S4C are also partners.

Unlike Freeview, Freely does not depend primarily on a terrestrial aerial. A compatible Freely television or streaming device can receive supported live channels over the internet, although some Freely equipment can also combine internet channels with aerial-delivered services.

Freely in one sentence

Freely is a UK platform from Everyone TV that brings live streamed channels and broadcaster catch-up services into one TV-guide experience, using broadband instead of requiring an aerial or satellite dish.

It is best understood as a successor-style companion to the traditional free-TV platforms rather than as a new broadcaster. Freely does not commission a separate catalogue of programmes. Instead, it aggregates participating broadcasters in one interface and directs viewers to the appropriate player when they select on-demand content.

Who runs Freely?

Freely is operated by Everyone TV, the organisation behind the UK’s major free-to-view television platforms. It launched on 30 April 2024 with joint support from the BBC, ITV, Channel 4 and Channel 5—the first time those four UK public-service broadcasters had launched a streaming proposition together.

The platform’s purpose is straightforward: preserve the simplicity of conventional television as viewing moves from broadcast signals to internet streaming. Rather than opening several separate apps to find live television, viewers can browse supported channels in a familiar electronic programme guide.

Freely also has partnerships with STV and S4C, bringing their channels and on-demand content into the wider platform where available.

How Freely works

A Freely television or compatible streaming device connects to the internet using Wi-Fi or, where available, an Ethernet cable. The platform then presents supported live channels in a conventional guide. Selecting a programme may start an internet stream directly or open the relevant broadcaster player.

For catch-up and on-demand viewing, viewers may be sent to services including:

  • BBC iPlayer
  • ITVX
  • Channel 4
  • 5
  • UKTV Play

You generally need to sign in to the relevant broadcaster account before watching its on-demand library. Freely therefore makes the services easier to find, but it does not remove the need for individual player accounts.

At launch, Everyone TV highlighted features such as pausing live television, restarting programmes and finding more episodes. However, these functions are not guaranteed for every channel or programme. Availability depends on the broadcaster, player application, device and particular content rights.

Do you need an aerial?

No aerial is required for Freely’s internet-delivered service. This is one of its main differences from traditional Freeview. If your television is in a room without an aerial socket, or your home receives poor terrestrial reception, Freely may provide a useful alternative—provided your broadband connection is suitable.

An aerial remains optional on compatible Freely televisions when you want to add channels received through terrestrial reception. In practice, some households can use a hybrid setup: internet-delivered channels through Freely alongside additional channels received through an aerial.

There is also no need for a satellite dish for the Freely service. The essential connection is broadband, delivered over Wi-Fi or Ethernet.

What can you watch on Freely?

The available line-up includes major free-to-view services such as:

  • BBC One and BBC Two
  • BBC Three and BBC Four
  • ITV1, ITV2, ITV3 and ITV4
  • Channel 4, E4, Film4, More4 and 4seven
  • Channel 5, 5STAR and 5ACTION
  • U&Dave, U&Drama and U&Yesterday

This is an indicative selection, not a permanent channel list. Channel availability, numbering, regional services and internet-streaming eligibility can change. Check the official Freely channel list immediately before buying equipment or publishing a comparison.

Freely’s support information says viewers can access approximately 96% of the UK’s most-watched programmes without paying a separate Freely subscription. That figure should not be read as a guarantee that every Freeview channel is available through the internet. The selection depends on the device, region and connection mode—particularly whether the equipment is internet-only or connected to both broadband and an aerial.

Is Freely free?

Freely does not charge a separate monthly subscription for its free-to-view platform. However, UK viewers still need a TV Licence to watch or record live television or use BBC iPlayer, including when those services are accessed through Freely.

Individual player apps may also offer paid upgrades, rentals or subscription services. Those charges are separate from Freely and depend on the broadcaster or service involved.

What equipment do you need?

There are two principal ways to get Freely.

Option 1: Buy a television with Freely built in

Freely is integrated into selected television ranges rather than being a standard app that can be downloaded to any smart TV. Supported models have been offered by manufacturers including Hisense and Vestel-powered brands, and Freely’s current product information also lists ranges from Hisense, Panasonic, Toshiba, TCL, Sharp and Bush.

The important qualification is that not every television from one of these brands necessarily supports Freely. Compatibility is model-specific and product availability changes. Before buying, check the exact model number against the manufacturer’s listing and Freely’s official compatible-TV information.

This route makes sense if you are replacing a television anyway and want the guide and live-streaming service integrated into the set.

Option 2: Add a Freely streaming device to an existing TV

If you already own a suitable television, a dedicated Freely streaming device can connect through HDMI and deliver the platform without replacing the screen. Your television needs an available HDMI input, and the device needs Wi-Fi or Ethernet access to your home network.

Examples currently listed by Freely include the Manhattan Aero 4K TV Streamer and the Netgem PLEIO 4K Puck. Prices, retailer stock, included accessories and exact specifications can change, so verify the current UK listing before purchasing.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

This is the more economical route for many households, especially when the existing TV still has a good picture and an available HDMI port. It is a hardware solution—not an Amazon Fire TV, Roku or Apple TV app that can automatically be installed on unsupported equipment.

Broadband requirements

Freely recommends at least 10 Mbps for live streaming and on-demand content. That is a minimum recommendation, not a guarantee that every household will receive uninterrupted playback.

Actual performance can be affected by Wi-Fi signal strength, distance from the router, network congestion, the number of devices using the connection and the quality of the broadband line. Ethernet is recommended where practical, particularly when the television is far from the router or several people regularly stream at the same time.

Some compatible Freely televisions and devices support 4K Ultra HD. Freely identifies BBC iPlayer and YouTube as the main sources of free UHD content on compatible equipment and recommends at least 40 Mbps for the best UHD experience. This does not mean that all Freely channels broadcast in 4K: UHD depends on the device, programme and service providing the content.

Freely versus Freeview

Feature Freely Freeview
Primary delivery method Broadband internet Terrestrial television through an aerial
Satellite dish required No No
Aerial required No for internet-delivered Freely; optional on compatible hybrid equipment Yes
Live-TV guide Yes, for supported internet and aerial services Yes, depending on equipment
Catch-up access Links into participating broadcaster players Usually provided through compatible TV apps or devices
Channel coverage Varies by device, region and connection mode Varies by terrestrial coverage and transmitter
Recording Not central; depends on the device and usually an aerial tuner Depends on the particular recorder or television

The distinction is therefore not completely binary. A Freely TV may use both broadband and an aerial, while a Freeview-capable television may also have streaming apps. The practical question is which delivery method provides the channels you want in your location.

What Freely does not do

  • It does not provide every Freeview channel over the internet. Some services may only be available through an aerial, while others may vary by region or device.
  • It does not include every streaming service. Freely focuses on participating free-to-view broadcasters and supported player apps. It is not a universal replacement for every smart-TV operating system.
  • It does not make all on-demand viewing account-free. You may need separate BBC iPlayer, ITVX, Channel 4, 5 or UKTV Play logins.
  • It is not primarily a recording platform. Freely is designed around live streaming and catch-up. Recording features depend on the television or streaming device and generally require an aerial-connected terrestrial tuner.
  • It is not available as a general app for every unsupported television. You normally need a compatible TV with Freely built in or a compatible Freely streaming device.

Who is Freely best for?

Freely may suit you if:

  • you want live television without relying on an aerial;
  • your home has weak or unreliable terrestrial reception;
  • you want a television guide that combines live streaming and catch-up;
  • you are replacing a TV and want Freely built in;
  • you already have an HDMI-equipped TV and would rather add a device than replace it;
  • you are comfortable using broadband for live television and signing into broadcaster apps.

It may be less suitable if:

  • your broadband connection is slow, unstable or poorly positioned for Wi-Fi;
  • you depend on a specific channel that is only available through an aerial in your area;
  • you want extensive recording functionality;
  • you expect one account to unlock every on-demand service;
  • you already have a smart-TV setup that provides all the apps and channels you need.

Before buying: a practical checklist

  1. Check your location. Confirm which services are available in your UK region, including regional BBC, ITV, STV or S4C options where relevant.
  2. Check the exact model. Do not rely solely on a manufacturer’s brand name. Confirm that the precise television or streaming-device model supports Freely.
  3. Measure your broadband. Aim for at least 10 Mbps for standard Freely use and around 40 Mbps for the best compatible UHD experience.
  4. Check your network position. Ethernet is preferable where possible. If using Wi-Fi, make sure the TV or device receives a strong signal.
  5. Decide whether you need an aerial. Internet-only Freely may be enough, but an aerial can add terrestrial channels and may be needed for certain recording functions.
  6. Check HDMI and accessories. For an add-on device, confirm that your TV has a spare HDMI port and check what the box includes before buying an additional cable.
  7. Allow for broadcaster accounts. Set up the relevant player accounts if you want catch-up and on-demand viewing.
  8. Remember the TV Licence. Freely does not change the UK’s licensing requirement for live TV or BBC iPlayer.

Common questions when setting up Freely

Can Freely work on a Samsung or LG TV?

Freely’s guidance says Samsung and LG televisions do not currently have Freely built in. Owners of those sets may be able to use a compatible Freely streaming device instead, provided the TV has an HDMI input. Always check the latest compatibility information because platform support can change.

Can you use Freely with Wi-Fi?

Yes. Freely televisions and streaming devices can connect over Wi-Fi. Ethernet is recommended where available because it can provide a more consistent connection, particularly in larger homes or busy households.

Can Freely replace an aerial?

For the supported channels delivered over the internet, yes: an aerial is not required. But Freely does not guarantee that every channel available through terrestrial Freeview is also available online. Keeping or adding an aerial may therefore provide broader or different coverage.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Can you record programmes on Freely?

Recording is not the core Freely experience. Whether recording is possible depends on the specific television or streaming device, and recording terrestrial channels generally requires an aerial-connected tuner. For many programmes, the intended alternative is catch-up through the broadcaster’s player.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is Freely completely free?

Freely has no separate subscription charge for its free-to-view platform, but UK viewers still need a TV Licence to watch or record live television or use BBC iPlayer. Some individual player apps may offer separate paid services.

Do I need an aerial for Freely?

No, not for Freely’s internet-delivered channels. A compatible TV or streaming device can use broadband through Wi-Fi or Ethernet. An aerial remains useful for terrestrial channels that are not available over the internet and for some recording functions.

Is Freely the same as Freeview?

No. Freeview primarily uses a terrestrial aerial, while Freely’s defining feature is live-TV delivery over broadband. Some compatible Freely televisions can use both methods.

Can I install Freely as an app on any smart TV?

No. Freely is integrated into supported television models or supplied through compatible streaming hardware. It is not a general-purpose app that can automatically be installed on every unsupported smart TV.

What broadband speed does Freely need?

Freely recommends at least 10 Mbps for live and on-demand streaming. It recommends at least 40 Mbps for the best UHD experience on compatible devices and content. Wi-Fi quality and household network use also affect playback.

The Bottom Line

Freely is a broadband-based UK free-TV platform, not a new broadcaster and not a universal smart-TV app. It brings supported live channels and broadcaster catch-up services into one guide, can work without an aerial, and is available either through selected televisions or dedicated streaming devices. Check the exact channel, model and regional availability before buying, and remember that a TV Licence and broadcaster accounts may still be required.
