Kelly Ripa became visibly emotional on Live with Kelly and Mark on May 1, 2024, when Art Moore announced that he would retire from ABC in September after 53 years with the company. Ripa said Moore was the reason she joined Live—and a major reason she had remained with the show for so long.
The moment was more than a celebrity farewell. Moore was a senior ABC and WABC programming executive who had been closely involved with Live for 36 seasons. His retirement marked the departure of one of the people who helped shape the program behind the scenes while becoming a trusted figure in Ripa’s professional life.
Ripa’s emotional reaction to Art Moore’s retirement
Moore’s retirement announcement came during the May 1 broadcast, which also happened to be Kelly Ripa and Mark Consuelos’s 28th wedding anniversary. Ripa acknowledged the personal significance of the date before turning to the news that Moore planned to leave ABC in September.
As Moore discussed his decision, Ripa fought back tears and told him how important he was to her, her family, and the Live staff. She described Moore as the reason she was at the show and said he was central to her decision to stay for so many years. Those comments were Ripa’s on-air description of their relationship—not a claim that Moore alone determined every part of her career—but they made clear how much influence and personal trust she associated with him.

Ripa also joked that she would spend the months before his departure trying to change his mind. She characterized herself as relentless, turning an emotional exchange into the kind of affectionate, humorous conversation familiar to the program. There was no indication that Moore was leaving because of conflict, was fired, or had reversed his decision. Later reporting confirmed that he retired in September 2024.
Who is Art Moore?
Moore was not simply an anonymous producer attached to the daytime show. At the time of his announcement, he was vice president of programming at WABC-TV and the executive in charge of production for Live, a position he had held for 36 seasons.
His career with the ABC family began in the early 1970s at WKBW-TV in Buffalo, when the company was known as Capital Cities/ABC. He later became director of programming at WPVI-TV, also known as Philadelphia’s 6abc, before joining WABC in New York in 1989.
Across those roles, Moore worked on programming strategy, production, audience relationships, and the practical challenges of keeping major television operations running. His résumé also included involvement with syndicated productions such as Road to Gold, an Academy Awards preview program that ran for two decades.

ABC executives described Moore as a multi-Emmy winner and a significant figure in daytime television. Debra O’Connell, then president of Disney Entertainment’s News Group and Networks, praised his creativity, production judgment, understanding of audiences, ability to solve problems, and generosity. Chad Matthews, president of ABC Owned Television Stations, called Moore’s influence at WABC and Live substantial and referred to him as a daytime television pioneer.
Why Moore mattered to Live with Kelly and Mark
Long-running television shows are shaped by more than the people visible on camera. Programming executives and production leaders make decisions about the show’s direction, manage its relationship with the network and station, and help guide it through changes in hosts, formats, schedules, and audience expectations.
That background explains why Ripa’s reaction carried particular weight. Moore had not merely appeared occasionally as a guest or offered a ceremonial retirement message. He was a senior decision-maker connected to the show’s production and to the environment in which Ripa built her tenure.
Ripa joined Live in 2001 as Regis Philbin’s co-host. She later continued through several host transitions, including the period after Philbin’s departure and the arrival of Mark Consuelos as her permanent co-host. Her statement that Moore was a reason she had stayed framed him as a consistent source of support during those changes.

It also gave viewers a glimpse of the professional relationships that typically remain outside the frame. Moore’s contribution was institutional and editorial as much as performative: he helped maintain the infrastructure and identity of a program that had to remain familiar while adapting over decades.
The announcement balanced emotion with humor
The May 1 segment did not treat the retirement as a solemn news conference. Moore joked about his extraordinary length of service and spoke about spending more time with his family after leaving ABC. He mentioned plans involving time in Phoenix and Palm Springs.
That mixture of sadness, warmth, and teasing was important to the tone of the exchange. Ripa’s tears communicated the significance of the loss to the Live team, while the jokes reflected Moore’s long familiarity with the show and its hosts. The segment presented retirement as a planned next chapter rather than a crisis.
How Live marked Moore’s retirement

The tribute was incorporated into a regular entertainment episode rather than presented as a separate news special. The program also featured actor Kelsey Grammer and a Guinness World Record-related toilet-paper-launcher segment, an arrangement that allowed the show to honor Moore while retaining its usual mix of interviews, humor, and unusual studio features.

Ripa returned to Moore’s career in a September 11, 2024, episode of her podcast, Let’s Talk Off Camera with Kelly Ripa. Titled “Art Moore: The Art of Moore,” the roughly 52-minute conversation explored his life and work in more detail than the daytime farewell could.
The discussion included Moore’s early work as a children’s magician, memories involving figures such as Zsa Zsa Gabor, Gloria Vanderbilt, and Regis Philbin, and Ripa’s effort to persuade him to remain at ABC. The podcast gave the pair more time to reflect on the people and experiences behind his long television career.

A planned retirement after more than five decades

For the program, it was an acknowledgment of a longtime executive whose work helped preserve its connection with audiences across multiple eras. Ripa may have joked about trying to keep him from leaving, but the September farewell confirmed that Moore did retire as planned.
