Contemporaneous reports differed in how they described the cause of death. An Associated Press report carried by WTOP said that the family’s statement did not give a cause. The Los Angeles Times, citing family lawyer Natasha Roit, reported that Brown had Alzheimer’s disease and died of natural causes. The Boston Globe also reported Alzheimer’s disease. Because the initial family statement omitted a cause, the most accurate summary is that later reporting attributed his death to natural causes in the context of Alzheimer’s disease, rather than presenting one unqualified medical conclusion.

Brown was married to Juditha “Judi” Baur Brown. His family obituary listed daughters Wendy, Denise, Dominique, Tanya, and Nicole; sons Rolf and Tracy; and Margit, a daughter who died in 1989.
His connection to the O.J. Simpson cases
Brown and his wife were regular courtroom presences during the 1995 Los Angeles criminal trial of O.J. Simpson, who was charged in the killings of Nicole Brown Simpson and Ronald Goldman. Reports described the couple attending the proceedings and leaving the courtroom when graphic photographs were displayed.
The criminal trial ended with Simpson’s acquittal in 1995. That verdict was separate from the later civil case. In 1997, a civil jury found Simpson liable for the deaths and awarded the victims’ families $33.5 million, according to contemporaneous Associated Press and Los Angeles Times reports. The criminal acquittal and the civil liability finding were different legal proceedings with different standards and outcomes; they should not be described as equivalent judgments.

Although Brown became associated with the case through his courtroom appearances, the available reporting does not establish that the trial defined his entire life. His public work after Nicole’s death increasingly focused on domestic-violence awareness and assistance for victims.
Military service and early career
Before his daughter’s death made him familiar to a national audience, Brown had served in the U.S. Army Air Forces during World War II. He became a captain and flew B-17 bombers. According to the family obituary, he was flying B-17s at 21 and later flew photographic missions in North Africa, Spain, and other locations.
After the war, Brown worked with Stars and Stripes Publications in Germany. He later entered real estate, insurance, and other business ventures. These details provide a broader view of his background than the courtroom coverage alone: he was a wartime pilot, an overseas worker, and a businessman before becoming associated with Nicole’s case and its aftermath.

Domestic-violence advocacy after Nicole’s death
Brown and his daughter Denise founded the Nicole Brown Foundation, also referred to in reports as the Nicole Brown Charitable Foundation. The organization was created after Nicole’s death to raise awareness of domestic violence and support assistance for victims and shelters.
Brown was also credited as a co-author of Stop Domestic Violence: An Action Plan for Saving Lives, published by St. Martin’s Griffin in 1997. The 203-page trade paperback was presented as a practical guide for victims, families, friends, support networks, and communities. His book Stop Domestic Violence: An Action Plan for Saving Lives is the most direct surviving publication associated with his advocacy work.
