iHostage is a fictionalized Dutch thriller inspired by the February 22, 2022 hostage crisis at an Apple Store on Amsterdam’s Leidseplein. It is not a documentary or a scene-by-scene reconstruction. The approximately 100-minute Netflix film uses fictionalized characters, dramatized dialogue, and a multi-perspective structure to follow the hostage-taker, the people trapped inside the store, and the police and emergency responders outside.
The film’s most striking element comes from the real incident: the standoff ended after the hostage escaped and a Dutch police vehicle struck the hostage-taker. The hostage survived; the hostage-taker later died from his injuries. That unusual resolution is the factual foundation beneath the film’s cinematic retelling.
What is iHostage about?
Directed by Bobby Boermans and written by Simon de Waal, iHostage begins when an armed man enters an Apple Store in central Amsterdam, fires shots, and takes a customer hostage. He demands an enormous cryptocurrency ransom—described in Netflix’s film material as more than $200 million—and wants safe passage.
Rather than telling the story exclusively from the perspective of the police, the film moves among three groups:

- The hostage-taker, whose actions and apparent motives drive the crisis;
- The hostages and other civilians, who must make decisions inside a confined and dangerous space; and
- The police, negotiators, and emergency responders, who attempt to contain the situation and bring it to an end.
This structure gives the movie a broader scope than a conventional siege thriller. The Apple Store is the central location, but the drama also depends on the pressure placed on the responders outside and on the shifting relationships among those trapped inside.
Netflix identifies the film as a 2025 title and describes it as inspired by the 2022 Amsterdam Apple Store hostage crisis. Its global Netflix premiere was April 18, 2025. The film is primarily in Dutch, with English and Bulgarian language elements reported in major film databases. Runtime listings vary slightly, so it is safest to expect roughly 100 to 102 minutes.
Spoiler warning: The sections below discuss the real incident, the film’s fictionalization, and the unusual ending of the hostage crisis.
Is iHostage based on a true story?
Yes, but “inspired by” is the more accurate description than “true story.” The film draws on a real hostage crisis that took place at the Apple Store on Amsterdam’s Leidseplein on February 22, 2022. However, the movie is a dramatization, not documentary evidence of everything shown on screen.

Those contacts helped inform the production, but they do not establish that every conversation, police decision, motivation, or timeline in the finished film happened exactly as depicted.
The distinction matters particularly because the crisis was recent and its outcome was publicly reported in detail in the Netherlands. Viewers may recognize the broad event while still seeing fictionalized scenes constructed to create suspense and character drama.
What happened in the real Amsterdam hostage crisis?
According to a joint statement from Amsterdam authorities, police received a report at approximately 5:30 p.m. on February 22, 2022, about a possible robbery at the Apple Store on Leidseplein. When the first police units arrived, shots were fired at them.
A 27-year-old Amsterdam man was holding a Bulgarian man hostage. Dozens of other people were inside the building, creating a wider emergency even though the armed man’s direct hostage was the Bulgarian customer.
The standoff lasted several hours. During the crisis, a police robot was delivering water to the hostage-taker. The hostage then ran from the building. A Dutch DSI service vehicle—DSI being the country’s specialist intervention service—struck the hostage-taker.
The hostage survived. The hostage-taker suffered serious injuries and later died. The vehicle intervention became the decisive action that ended the standoff and attracted substantial public attention because it was so different from the conventional image of a hostage rescue: there was no prolonged tactical assault shown in contemporary accounts, but a carefully timed intervention involving the escaping hostage and a moving police vehicle.

What did the investigation conclude about the police intervention?
The Dutch Public Prosecution Service announced on June 10, 2022, that the DSI officer had acted in accordance with the applicable official instructions and that the intervention was justified. That conclusion followed a Rijksrecherche investigation involving witness interviews, forensic examination, and analysis of the service vehicle.
This is an important distinction when discussing the film’s ending. The legal conclusion belongs to the Dutch Public Prosecution Service and the underlying investigation—not to the film itself. iHostage dramatizes the event for a thriller audience, while the official investigation addressed whether the officer’s conduct was lawful and consistent with operational instructions.

Which characters in iHostage are fictionalized?
The movie uses fictionalized names rather than presenting its principal characters as a literal list of the real participants.
Netflix Tudum identifies Soufiane Moussouli’s character as Ammar Ajar, the hostage-taker, and Admir Šehović’s character as Ilian Petrov, the Bulgarian hostage. Those names belong to the film’s dramatic version of the story. They should not automatically be treated as the real names of the people involved in the 2022 crisis.
The same caution applies to private conversations and personal motivations. The film must give viewers access to thoughts, negotiations, and emotional conflicts that were not publicly available in complete form. Those elements are therefore best understood as screenplay construction, even where they may have been informed by research or interviews.
How accurate is the film?
iHostage is most reliable as a dramatized account of the crisis’s broad outline: an armed takeover at an Amsterdam Apple Store, a cryptocurrency ransom demand, a Bulgarian hostage, a lengthy police response, the hostage’s escape, and the DSI vehicle intervention.

Random freezes, missing sound and display glitches usually trace back to one bad driver. Find and replace yours safely.Free scan · under a minuteIt should be treated more cautiously as a procedural reconstruction. The following aspects are likely to involve cinematic compression or invention unless independently supported by official records:
- the precise sequence and timing of events;
- the wording of negotiations;
- the private behavior and motivations of the hostage-taker and hostage;
- the internal discussions among police and emergency personnel;
- the way individual civilians respond under pressure; and
- the film’s emotional and thematic connections between characters.
The production’s consultation with police sources gives the film a researched foundation, but consultation is not the same as official verification of every scene. The fairest description is a cinematic reconstruction that uses real events as its framework.
Why the film’s ending attracted attention
Many hostage thrillers build toward a planned tactical rescue, a negotiation breakthrough, or a sudden act of violence inside the building. The real Amsterdam crisis ended in a more unusual way. The hostage escaped while water was being delivered to the hostage-taker, and the police vehicle then struck the hostage-taker.
That outcome creates an unusual challenge for a filmmaker. Dutch audiences already knew the basic ending, so suspense could not depend only on the question of whether the hostage-taker would be stopped. The film instead creates tension through perspective: what is happening inside the store, what the responders understand outside, and how the opportunity to end the crisis emerges.

Outbyte PC Repair FREERepair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Outbyte Driver Updater FREEFix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →It also creates a tension between spectacle and responsibility. The vehicle intervention is inherently cinematic, but the real-world outcome involved a surviving hostage, a dead hostage-taker, an investigation, and a formal legal assessment. A responsible reading of the film should keep all of those consequences in view rather than treating the collision as merely an action-movie climax.
Is iHostage a documentary?
No. iHostage is a Dutch crime, drama, mystery, and thriller film. It is presented as a fictionalized feature inspired by a real hostage crisis, not as a documentary.
That distinction is especially relevant for viewers looking for factual background. The film can introduce the event and communicate the pressure of a hostage situation, but it cannot replace official statements or serious reporting about what happened. Its fictional character names and dramatized dialogue are signals that it should be watched as a thriller first and a historical interpretation second.
Where can you watch iHostage?
iHostage was released globally on Netflix on April 18, 2025, and Netflix’s official title page lists it as a Netflix film. A United States availability check reported the title on Netflix and Netflix Standard with Ads on July 26, 2026.

No reliable iHostage DVD, Blu-ray, soundtrack, or official physical tie-in was identified in the available research.
Is iHostage worth watching?
It is a reasonable choice for viewers who want a compact hostage thriller with a strong real-world hook, an Amsterdam setting, and a story told across the hostage-taker, civilians, and responders. Its approximate 100-minute length also makes it a relatively short commitment.
Expectations matter. This is not a detailed documentary investigation, and viewers seeking a rigorously sourced reconstruction of the 2022 crisis may find the fictionalized dialogue and compressed procedure limiting. The film’s value lies more in how it turns an unusual real event into a tense, multi-perspective thriller than in providing a definitive record of the incident.
Critical reception was mixed in the available listings. Rotten Tomatoes showed a 19% Tomatometer score from seven critic reviews in the retrieved sample, while Metacritic displayed a small group of mixed-positive entries without a settled Metascore. These figures are sample-size-sensitive and can change as databases add or revise reviews. The broad takeaway is that some reviewers recognized the premise and brisk thriller mechanics, while others criticized the dialogue, characterization, tone, or perceived superficiality.

Content and parental guidance
The film contains an armed hostage situation, gunfire, threats, explosives, trapped civilians, police intervention, and cryptocurrency ransom demands. It is aimed at a mature audience and may be unsuitable for younger viewers or anyone sensitive to stories involving real-world hostage violence.
The fact that the film is inspired by a recent event may also make its violence feel more immediate than that of a wholly fictional action movie. Parents and guardians should check the current Netflix content advisories for their country before watching with teenagers.
