Ezra most commonly refers to a Hebrew name meaning “help” or “helper,” and to the Biblical priest and scribe associated with the return of Judean exiles and the restoration of religious life in Jerusalem. The word can also mean the Book of Ezra, the larger Biblical work known as Ezra-Nehemiah, the American poet Ezra Pound, or Ezra, Tony Goldwyn’s 2024 feature film. The context matters: these are distinct subjects, not different descriptions of one person.
Which “Ezra” do you mean?
A one-word title is not enough to identify the subject. These are the principal references:
| Reference | What it is | Key context |
|---|---|---|
| Ezra the name | A Hebrew given name traditionally explained as “help” or “helper.” | Used today for people of more than one gender, including in the United States. |
| Biblical Ezra | A priest, scribe, and religious reformer. | Ezra 7 presents him traveling from Babylon to Jerusalem during the reign of Artaxerxes. |
| The Book of Ezra | A canonical Jewish and Christian Scripture book. | It covers the return of exiles, the rebuilding of the Jerusalem Temple, and Ezra’s teaching and reforms. |
| Ezra-Nehemiah | A broader Biblical literary work presented as two books in many modern Bibles. | It includes Nehemiah’s rebuilding of Jerusalem’s walls and later reforms. |
| Ezra Pound | An American poet and critic, born in 1885 and deceased in 1972. | A literary reference unrelated to the Biblical name’s narrative. |
| Ezra (2024) | A feature film directed by Tony Goldwyn and written by Tony Spiridakis. | A family and parenting road-trip drama about Max Bernal and his autistic son, Ezra. |
Ezra as a name
Ezra is conventionally derived from Hebrew and is commonly translated as “help” or “helper.” The modern given name is connected to the Biblical Ezra, whose identity as a learned religious leader gives the name a strong scriptural association.
Related forms appear in other language and textual traditions. Uzair or Uzayr is the Arabic form commonly associated with the same name tradition, while Esdras is a Greek-Latin form found in Biblical and later textual traditions. These should be understood as related forms, not as names that are automatically identical in every cultural or religious setting.

How popular is Ezra in the United States?
Ezra is a mainstream U.S. name but is not currently in the national top ten. The Social Security Administration’s 2025 data ranks it:
| SSA category | 2025 rank | 2024 rank |
|---|---|---|
| Boys | 20 | 13 |
| Girls | 834 | 701 |
Those are U.S.-specific, sex-category rankings. They do not describe global naming patterns, and they do not mean Ezra is exclusively a boys’ name: the SSA records it in both its boys’ and girls’ tables. The national number also conceals regional differences. For example, Ezra was among Hawaii’s five most popular boys’ names in the SSA’s 2024 state table.
Who was the Biblical Ezra?
The Biblical Ezra is portrayed as a descendant of Aaron, a priest, and a highly trained scribe. In Ezra 7, he leaves Babylon for Jerusalem with other Israelites and religious personnel. The passage emphasizes three linked activities: Ezra studies the law of Moses, practices it, and teaches it to the community.
That description makes Ezra more than a passive copyist. The text presents him as a religious scholar who turns knowledge of the law into communal leadership. His role combines priestly authority, literacy, teaching, and reform at a time when the post-exilic community was rebuilding its institutions and religious identity.

When did Ezra arrive in Jerusalem?
The often-cited date is approximately 458 B.C., based on identifying the Artaxerxes in Ezra 7 as Artaxerxes I and reading the reference to his seventh year accordingly. That date is a scholarly reconstruction rather than an uncontested fact.

The chronology remains debated because interpreters differ over which Artaxerxes is intended and how the regnal-year reference should be understood. Some readings involve Artaxerxes II or a different interpretation of the seventh year. A careful summary should therefore say that Ezra’s arrival is commonly dated to around 458 B.C., not that the date is certain.
What is the Book of Ezra about?
The Book of Ezra describes major events in the restoration of the Judean community after exile. Its narrative includes:
- the return of Judean exiles;
- the rebuilding and dedication of the Temple in Jerusalem;
- Ezra’s journey from Babylon to Jerusalem;
- his work teaching the Torah, or law of Moses; and
- reforms intended to reshape the post-exilic community.
The book’s focus shifts over time. The opening movement follows the initial return and Temple rebuilding associated with Zerubbabel. A later movement follows Ezra’s arrival and his religious and communal reforms. This is why “Ezra” can refer both to a person and to a book centered partly on his mission.

The final part of Ezra includes a decree concerning marriages between returned exiles and people living around Jerusalem. The reform movement culminates in a demand for separation from those marriages, a passage that is historically important but ethically difficult.
It should not be presented as an uncomplicated contemporary model for social policy. The narrative raises questions about identity, belonging, religious boundaries, power, family life, and the human consequences of forced separation. Modern readers and commentators interpret the passage in different ways, but a responsible explanation should acknowledge its tension and disappointing consequences rather than flattening it into a simple lesson about reform.

Readers studying Ezra 7–10 may find a Book of Ezra study guide or Bible commentary useful, particularly when the resource explains its denominational or interpretive approach instead of treating every difficult passage as self-explanatory.
Ezra and Nehemiah: one work or two?
“The Book of Ezra” and “Ezra-Nehemiah” are related terms, but they are not interchangeable in every discussion. In many modern Bibles, Ezra and Nehemiah appear as two separate books. BibleProject describes them as originally forming one unified work that was divided into two books in later transmission and modern Bible arrangements.

The distinction matters because Ezra is not the sole protagonist of the entire Ezra-Nehemiah narrative:
- Zerubbabel is central to the initial return and the rebuilding of the Temple.
- Ezra becomes the principal figure in the later mission of teaching the Torah and instituting reforms.
- Nehemiah becomes the main leader in the rebuilding of Jerusalem’s walls and is associated with later community reforms.
So, if a documentary, study guide, or discussion refers to Ezra-Nehemiah, it is addressing a broader narrative than the modern book titled Ezra alone.
Ezra Pound: the literary reference
Ezra Pound was an American poet and critic who lived from 1885 to 1972. The Library of Congress holds papers relating to Pound, and its archival material documents his place in twentieth-century literary history, including the 1949 Bollingen Prize for Poetry.
Ezra Pound is a completely different referent from the Biblical priest and the modern given name. The shared first name can make search results confusing, especially when a title or catalogue entry contains only “Ezra.” A literary context will usually include terms such as “poetry,” “modernism,” “critic,” “selected poems,” or “Eliot.”

For readers who mean the poet, Ezra Pound: Selected Poems, edited by T. S. Eliot, is a documented Faber & Faber title. Records include a 1956 edition and later paperback editions. This is a literary reading path, not a general recommendation for someone researching the Biblical name or the Book of Ezra.
Ezra, the 2024 film
Ezra is a 2024 feature film directed by Tony Goldwyn and written by Tony Spiridakis. The official film synopsis centers on Max Bernal, a stand-up comedian who is co-parenting his autistic son, Ezra, while living with Max’s father. The announced cast includes Bobby Cannavale, Robert De Niro, Rose Byrne, Vera Farmiga, Rainn Wilson, Whoopi Goldberg, and William Fitzgerald.
The film’s subject is family relationships, parenting, disability, and a road-trip drama. It is not a documentary about the Biblical Ezra, the origin of the name, or Ezra Pound. The title comes from the child character and should be labelled with its year or director when clarity matters.
Industry release references report digital availability in June 2024 and DVD and Blu-ray release on July 23, 2024. Physical-media availability can vary by country, region, seller, and time, so a current listing should be checked before using language such as “available now.”
How to identify the right Ezra in a search or catalogue
If “Ezra” appears as the title of a documentary, video, book, or programme, use the surrounding metadata rather than the title alone:
Best Value

- Safe & Simple Assembly: Assembly is quick and guided by an installation video, with an anti-tipping tool included for added stability. You’ll have your new storage shelves set up in no time, ready to organize your space
- Check the subtitle. Words such as “Bible,” “Nehemiah,” “Pound,” “poems,” “film,” or a person’s surname usually resolve the ambiguity.
- Check the date. A 2024 entertainment listing may refer to Goldwyn’s feature film, while an ancient-history or religious-history programme may be discussing the Biblical figure.
- Check the subject description. References to exile, Jerusalem, the Temple, priests, scribes, or Torah point toward Biblical Ezra. Poetry and literary criticism point toward Ezra Pound. Parenting and a road trip point toward the film.
- Check the medium. The Book of Ezra is Scripture; Ezra Pound’s works are literature; Ezra (2024) is a feature film. None should be treated as a documentary simply because it appears in a documentary catalogue.
- Check the geography and tradition. Uzair or Uzayr and Esdras may indicate a related linguistic or textual tradition, but the precise meaning depends on the source and cultural context.
Sources and scope
This overview draws on Merriam-Webster’s entry for Ezra; the text of Ezra 7; BibleProject’s overview of Ezra-Nehemiah; the U.S. Social Security Administration’s national and state name tables; Library of Congress materials on Ezra Pound; bibliographic records for Ezra Pound: Selected Poems; and the official synopsis and release references for Ezra (2024). Biblical chronology and the interpretation of Ezra’s reforms are presented with the uncertainty and ethical context reflected in those sources.
Frequently Asked Questions
What does the name Ezra mean?
Ezra is a Hebrew name conventionally translated as “help” or “helper.” It is associated with the Biblical priest and scribe Ezra. Related forms include Uzair or Uzayr in Arabic and Esdras in Greek-Latin Biblical and later textual traditions, although related forms are not automatically identical in every context.
Is Ezra a boys’ name or a girls’ name?
In the United States, Ezra is used for both. The Social Security Administration’s 2025 data ranks it 20th for boys and 834th for girls. Those rankings apply to the United States and should not be generalized to other countries.
What is the difference between Ezra and Ezra-Nehemiah?
The Book of Ezra is the Biblical book focused on the return from exile, the rebuilding and dedication of the Jerusalem Temple, and Ezra’s teaching and reforms. Ezra-Nehemiah refers to the broader literary work that includes the Book of Nehemiah, where Nehemiah is the principal figure in rebuilding Jerusalem’s walls. The two books were originally presented as a unified work and were divided in many modern Bibles.
Is the 2024 film Ezra a documentary?
No. It is a 2024 feature film directed by Tony Goldwyn and written by Tony Spiridakis. Its story follows Max Bernal, a comedian co-parenting his autistic son Ezra, and is unrelated to the Biblical figure, the Book of Ezra, or Ezra Pound.
The Bottom Line
Bottom line: Without additional context, Ezra most often means the Hebrew name or the Biblical priest and scribe. The Book of Ezra expands that reference into a post-exilic account of return, Temple restoration, teaching, and reform; Ezra-Nehemiah is the broader paired narrative. Ezra Pound and the 2024 film are separate subjects that should always be identified with their literary or cinematic context.
