Find and replace yours safely.Free scan · under a minuteChristmas with the Kranks became one of the season’s biggest U.S. streaming surprises in December 2025, reaching No. 2 on HBO Max’s movie chart on December 17. The result was not evidence that every Tim Allen holiday film suddenly dominated every service. It was a more specific—and more useful—story: a familiar Christmas movie moved to a new platform, arrived during peak seasonal demand, and found a large audience ready to rediscover it.
The same holiday cycle also brought renewed attention to The Santa Clause franchise. Disney+ remained the home identified by Disney for the 1994 original and the continuation series The Santa Clauses, while The Santa Clause 2 reached No. 3 on FlixPatrol’s U.S. Disney+ chart on December 26, 2025.
Christmas with the Kranks was the clearest chart comeback
The strongest documented chart event involved Christmas with the Kranks, the 2004 comedy starring Tim Allen as Luther Krank and Jamie Lee Curtis as his wife, Nora.
According to reporting that attributed its data to FlixPatrol, the film ranked No. 2 among HBO Max’s top U.S. movies on December 17, 2025. It appeared below It and above other titles on that day’s list. Entertainment coverage published between December 18 and 21 presented the result as an unexpected holiday hit, but the timing had a straightforward explanation: the film had been added to HBO Max on December 1 after leaving Netflix.

That distribution change matters. A movie can seem to “come back” without being newly released or substantially changing its reputation. When a well-known seasonal title moves onto a major service in early December, it becomes easier for families to find at exactly the moment they are searching for something familiar to watch.
The chart position is therefore best understood as seasonal rediscovery following a platform change, not proof of a permanent Tim Allen revival or a year-round surge in demand.
Why the movie remains a reliable holiday rewatch
Christmas with the Kranks follows Luther and Nora Krank after their daughter leaves home. With no child at home for Christmas, the couple decides to skip the holiday and spend the money on an island cruise. Their plan collapses when their daughter announces that she is coming home, forcing the Kranks—and their famously committed neighbors—to recreate Christmas at the last minute.
Sony Pictures identifies the film as a 2004 family comedy directed toward a broad holiday audience and confirms its availability in digital, Blu-ray, and DVD formats. The movie is based on John Grisham’s novel Skipping Christmas. It was released theatrically on November 24, 2004, placing it in the same late-November corridor that continues to make it a natural seasonal programming choice.

The wider Tim Allen holiday rebound includes The Santa Clause
The HBO Max chart result belongs specifically to Christmas with the Kranks. The broader Tim Allen story comes from a different set of evidence: Disney’s continuing presentation of The Santa Clause franchise as a holiday collection and a separate Disney+ chart appearance for The Santa Clause 2.
On December 26, 2025, FlixPatrol’s U.S. Disney+ movie chart placed The Santa Clause 2 at No. 3. That does not mean all three films occupied the same chart or that the franchise led every service. It does show that another Tim Allen Christmas sequel was prominent on a major platform during the same holiday period.
Nielsen has also identified The Santa Clause among recurring holiday titles that help drive seasonal viewing, alongside perennial favorites such as Elf, the Grinch films, and National Lampoon’s Christmas Vacation. Nielsen’s discussion supports the durability of holiday-library viewing, but it does not establish a single Tim Allen ranking across the entire streaming market.

- The Santa Clause (1994): Scott Calvin, a divorced father, becomes Santa after the original Santa falls from the Calvin family’s roof on Christmas Eve.
- The Santa Clause 2 (2002): Scott must deal with the responsibilities and rules surrounding his continued role as Santa.
- The Santa Clause 3: The Escape Clause (2006): The third theatrical film expands the franchise’s North Pole mythology with a new threat to Christmas.
- The Santa Clauses (2022): The Disney+ continuation series returns Tim Allen as Scott Calvin, now 28 years into his career as Santa and concerned with keeping Christmas meaningful for a new generation.
The first film remains the essential starting point. Disney describes it as a PG adventure comedy starring Tim Allen, Judge Reinhold, Wendy Crewson, and Eric Lloyd, directed by John Pasquin. The series is not a replacement for the trilogy; it is a continuation that assumes interest in Scott Calvin’s later life and responsibilities.
For a complete family marathon
A The Santa Clause 3-movie collection can be a practical option for viewers who want the theatrical trilogy together rather than depending on changing streaming licenses. Confirm the edition, region, included discs, and current availability before buying.

What the 2025 charts do—and do not—prove
| Documented fact | What it means | What it does not mean |
|---|---|---|
| Christmas with the Kranks was added to HBO Max on December 1, 2025. | The movie became newly visible to HBO Max subscribers during the holiday window. | It does not prove that HBO Max remains its current home. |
| The film reached No. 2 on HBO Max’s U.S. movie chart on December 17, 2025. | It had strong short-term seasonal demand at that specific time. | It does not establish a current chart position or an all-market ranking. |
| The Santa Clause 2 reached No. 3 on FlixPatrol’s U.S. Disney+ chart on December 26, 2025. | A sequel also performed strongly on a holiday-season platform chart. | It does not show that the entire trilogy charted simultaneously. |
| Disney identifies Disney+ as the streaming home for the 1994 film and The Santa Clauses. | Disney’s service is the relevant place to check for those titles, subject to region and licensing. | It does not guarantee that every franchise entry is available in every country or on every date. |
Where to watch: use the date and territory, not just the title
Streaming availability is the most volatile part of this story. The dates above describe the U.S. market and historical chart activity during December 2025. They should not be rewritten as a claim that the movies are still in the same places now.
For a current viewing decision, check the title directly in the relevant service and confirm your country. In the United States, Disney’s official pages identify The Santa Clause and The Santa Clauses as Disney+ titles, while the historical reporting places Christmas with the Kranks on HBO Max beginning December 1, 2025. A service’s catalog, subscription requirements, rental options, and licensing window may all change after those dates.
If a title is unavailable, the practical alternatives are a digital rental or purchase, a legitimate availability guide, or physical media. The last option is especially useful for holiday movies because it avoids the annual uncertainty of platform rotations. A DVD or Blu-ray will not provide the convenience of a one-click stream, but it can preserve access when a seasonal favorite leaves a service.

Why holiday charts behave differently
Christmas movies benefit from a concentrated viewing season. Demand rises sharply in late November and December, and viewers tend to return to a relatively stable group of titles. That creates a different environment from the ordinary weekly streaming race, where new releases and general audience trends dominate.
Three factors help explain the Tim Allen results:
- Recognition: Viewers already know the characters, premise, or performers, reducing the effort required to choose a movie.
- Timing: A December 1 platform addition places a seasonal title in the catalog just as holiday viewing begins accelerating.
- Family suitability: The films are positioned as broad family comedies, making them usable for group viewing even when audiences have different tastes.
In other words, the 2025 chart movement is a useful example of how streaming success can be created by catalog timing and discoverability. The movies did not need to become new releases to become newly visible.
A sensible Tim Allen Christmas double feature
Viewers who want to sample the holiday resurgence without committing to the full Santa Clause run have two distinct starting points:
- Choose Christmas with the Kranks for a standalone family comedy about a couple attempting to opt out of Christmas and being pulled back in.
- Choose The Santa Clause for the beginning of a fantasy franchise centered on Scott Calvin’s transformation into Santa.
They offer different kinds of holiday viewing. The Kranks is an ensemble neighborhood comedy with a compressed, chaotic Christmas deadline. The Santa Clause is a character-origin story that develops into a broader fantasy series. The common thread is Tim Allen’s ability to play an ordinary, somewhat reluctant adult placed inside an increasingly absurd holiday situation.

The bottom line on the “comeback”
Tim Allen’s holiday catalog did experience a measurable seasonal resurgence during the 2025 Christmas cycle, but the evidence is specific rather than universal. Christmas with the Kranks reached No. 2 on HBO Max’s U.S. movie chart on December 17 after moving from Netflix to HBO Max on December 1. The Santa Clause 2 separately reached No. 3 on the U.S. Disney+ chart on December 26.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsTogether with Disney’s continued support for the three-film Santa Clause franchise and The Santa Clauses, those events show the strength of familiar holiday libraries. They do not show that every Tim Allen Christmas title is currently streaming everywhere—or that the cited rankings remain active after the 2025 holiday season.
