What Spotify Jam does
Spotify Jam is a shared listening session. People can listen together, add tracks to a common queue, and—depending on the playback device and the host’s settings—help control playback or volume. It works for people in the same room and for friends joining remotely.
The most important account rule is simple:
- Host: must have an active Spotify Premium subscription.
- Free listener in the same place: can join a Premium-hosted Jam in person.
- Remote participant: must have Premium to join remotely.
- Managed accounts for young listeners: Spotify lists Jam among the interactive features unavailable to managed accounts. A parent-controlled managed account should therefore not be assumed to work as a normal Jam account. See Spotify’s managed-account documentation.
A Jam is not the same as a collaborative playlist. A collaborative playlist lets people add songs for later; a Jam is a live listening session connected to a playback device.
How to start a Jam on the Spotify mobile app
- Open Spotify and start playing a song, album, or playlist.
- Tap the current playback bar at the bottom of the screen to open Now Playing.
- Tap the current playback device or the Connect device icon.
- Choose Start a Jam.
- Tap Invite.
- Send the invitation as a share link, or let people scan the QR code shown by Spotify.
Once the Jam is active, participants can join and add music to the shared queue. Spotify may also offer a way to start a Jam from a public playlist. The exact placement of the option can vary by app version, account, playback device, and region.

Starting a Jam for people nearby
For an in-person session, the host can display the QR code or use the nearby-device invitation. Spotify says nearby users may receive an invitation when they are on the same Wi-Fi network, have Bluetooth enabled, or bring their phones within approximately 1 metre of the host’s phone while logged in to Spotify. These nearby prompts are not guaranteed on every phone or network, so sharing the QR code or link is the more dependable fallback.
Starting a remote Jam
Use the same mobile steps, then send the Jam link to friends through your messaging app or another supported sharing method. Each remote participant needs Premium. A recipient opens the invitation, chooses to listen remotely, and taps Join.
Spotify’s January 2026 newsroom update also describes a Request to Jam route inside Messages for Premium users. A user can send a remote Jam request from a Messages chat; if the recipient accepts, that recipient becomes the host. This may depend on rollout and whether Messages is available on the relevant accounts, so treat it as an additional route rather than the universal way to start a Jam. How to start a Jam on Spotify desktop
- Open the Spotify desktop app and play a song or playlist.
- Open the three-dot menu, or right-click the song or playlist.
- Select Start a Jam.
- Select Invite.
- Share the Jam link or display the QR code for others to scan.
Spotify added desktop support in March 2024, and its current support documentation continues to include desktop instructions. If you do not see the option, connect Spotify to the speaker or other playback device you intend to use, then check the menu again.
How to start a Jam on a TV
Spotify supports in-person Jams on compatible TV setups, with music playing through the TV’s speakers or its connected audio system.

- Open Spotify on the TV.
- Go to the queue area.
- Choose Queue & Jam.
- Have friends scan the QR code displayed on the TV, or scan the QR-code notification shown by Spotify.
The host can manage whether participants may change what is playing, control volume on supported devices, or be automatically invited to join a Jam on that device. TV support and available controls can vary with the TV platform and connected speaker.
How to start a Jam in Android Auto
Spotify’s current support instructions specify Android Auto 14.5 or later and Spotify app version 9.0.50 or later for this route. Do not try to operate the feature while driving; set it up before the vehicle moves and let passengers handle joining.
- Open Spotify’s Now Playing view in Android Auto.
- Tap Jam.
- Ask passengers to scan the QR code, or have them enable Bluetooth for Spotify to discover the Jam.
In Android Auto, the host can view or remove guests, inspect the queue, play or pause tracks, skip songs, and control playback volume. The mobile app gives the host exclusive control of the Jam’s session volume, although anyone can use the vehicle’s physical volume dial.
How to start a Jam in Apple CarPlay
- Open Spotify in CarPlay.
- Open the Now Playing view.
- Select Queue & Jam.
- Ask friends to scan the QR code or enable Bluetooth for Spotify.
CarPlay participants can play, pause, skip, rearrange the queue, and add songs through search or Spotify’s Group Recommendations. As with Android Auto, configure the session before driving and keep interaction to a passenger when the vehicle is moving.
How friends join a Spotify Jam
A friend can join in any of these ways:
- Invitation link: open the host’s Jam link and follow Spotify’s join prompts.
- QR code: scan the code shown in the mobile app, desktop app, TV interface, or car display.
- Nearby phone: with Spotify open and the person logged in, bring the phone within approximately 1 metre of the host’s phone with Bluetooth enabled.
After opening the invitation, the participant chooses whether to listen remotely or in person, then taps Join. Remote listening requires Premium. For an in-person Jam hosted through a speaker, a Free account can join the Premium host’s session.

After joining, participants can add tracks directly or use Spotify’s recommendations. Depending on the host’s permissions and the device, they may also be able to influence playback.
What can participants do?
Everyone in a Jam can listen to the session and contribute songs to the shared queue. Spotify also allows participants to control what is playing on the speaker in supported situations. The host can restrict guests so that they may only add songs, rather than changing playback.

This is especially useful at a party or in a shared room, where unrestricted volume changes can be disruptive. Controls are not identical on every platform: the TV, desktop app, mobile app, Android Auto, and CarPlay may expose different options.
On desktop, the host can remove individual participants. On mobile, use the Jam or playback-device menu to manage guests and remove people from the session. If you want a calmer queue, turn off guest playback controls and leave guests with permission to add songs only.
Choosing the playback device for an in-person Jam
All participants do not need separate headphones. The group listens through the host’s selected playback device, such as a TV, car system, smart speaker, or Bluetooth speaker. Spotify says Jam works with most Bluetooth speakers and documents support for smart speakers, although the available controls can differ by model and setup.

If you need sound for a room, a Bluetooth speaker for Spotify Jam is the most direct hardware match: choose one with dependable Bluetooth support and enough volume for the space. For a fixed home setup, a smart speaker for Spotify can be a convenient alternative, but verify the model’s Spotify and Jam behavior before buying because not every speaker exposes every shared-control feature.
For a group, prioritize stable connection, adequate volume, battery life if you are moving between rooms, and a physical volume control. Headphones can be useful for ordinary private listening, but they are not the natural choice when the purpose of the Jam is shared playback.
How to leave or end a Jam
Leaving as a participant
To leave without ending the session for everyone, choose another playback device or select Leave from the Jam controls. The remaining participants can continue if the host stays connected.
Ending the session as host
If the host leaves, Spotify says the Jam ends for everyone. If you only want to stop listening temporarily, switch playback devices or leave the session rather than assuming another participant will automatically become host.

“Start a Jam” is missing
- Confirm that the account has an active Premium subscription. A Free account cannot host.
- Make sure Spotify is connected to the intended speaker, TV, car system, or other playback device.
- Update the Spotify app, especially if you are using Android Auto or CarPlay.
- Try starting playback first, then reopen the playback-device menu.
- Check whether the account is a managed account for a young listener, because Spotify does not make Jam available there.
A friend cannot join
- Have the person open the invitation link again and accept the join prompt.
- Confirm that the correct playback device and Jam are selected.
- For nearby joining, turn on Bluetooth and bring the logged-in phone close to the host’s phone.
- Use the QR code or direct link if the nearby invitation does not appear.
- For remote joining, confirm that the participant has Premium.
Guests cannot change the volume
Shared volume control requires a compatible speaker or playback device, and the host must enable guest volume control. If the device does not support shared volume, the host remains responsible for volume in Spotify. A physical volume dial on the speaker, TV, or vehicle may still work independently.

The queue or controls look different
Jam controls depend on whether you are using mobile, desktop, TV, Android Auto, or CarPlay, as well as the connected device. Look for Jam, Queue & Jam, the playback-device screen, or the three-dot/right-click menu. Spotify can also change labels as features roll out.

Quick checklist before you start
- The host is signed in to an active Premium account.
- The intended speaker or playback device is connected.
- Spotify is playing a song or playlist.
- Guests have the QR code or invitation link.
- Remote guests have Premium; nearby Free guests are physically with the host.

Can a Spotify Free user start a Jam?
