Connections answers for Tuesday, December 10, 2024
Below are the complete groupings and explanations.
Yellow: GIVE A TITLE TO
CALL, DUB, LABEL, NAME
Each word can be used as a verb meaning to give something a name or title. You can call, dub, label, or name something.
Green: PARTS OF A FLIGHT
CRUISE, TAKEOFF, TAXI, TOUCHDOWN
These are stages or phases of an airplane journey: an aircraft taxis, takes off, cruises, and eventually touches down.
Rank #3
Blue: FEEL AROUND (FOR)
FISH, FUMBLE, ROOT, RUMMAGE
This group relies on phrasal usage rather than exact synonyms. You can fish around, fumble around, root around, or rummage around when searching for something, particularly by touch or without a clear view.
Purple: COUNTRIES MINUS FIRST LETTER
INLAND, OLIVIA, RAN, WANDA
Add one initial letter to each entry to reveal a country:
| Grid word | Added letter | Country |
|---|---|---|
| INLAND | F | Finland |
| OLIVIA | B | Bolivia |
| RAN | I | Iran |
| WANDA | R | Rwanda |
Why this puzzle was tricky
The grid includes several words associated with movement or physical action, creating tempting but incomplete connections. RAN and FUMBLE, for example, can appear to belong together because both suggest action, while TOUCHDOWN may initially seem related to other sports or movement terms. The green group becomes clear when all four words are interpreted as stages of a flight.
Rank #4
The blue group is also easy to overlook because its words are not strict synonyms. Their shared feature is the phrase-like construction “___ around,” describing an uncertain or tactile search.
The purple group is the puzzle’s most abstract category. INLAND, OLIVIA, RAN, and WANDA do not share an obvious geographical meaning on their own. Their connection appears only after restoring the missing first letter of each country name.
