Redick’s family were among the public figures whose homes were destroyed or reported lost in the January 2025 Los Angeles-area wildfires. Hilton said her Malibu home was destroyed, the Crystals lost their longtime Pacific Palisades home, and Redick’s family lost a rental home in the Palisades. Their losses were part of a far larger disaster that forced hundreds of thousands of people to evacuate and destroyed thousands of homes and other structures.

Paris Hilton’s Malibu home
Paris Hilton said her Malibu home was destroyed in the fires. On January 8, 2025, The Associated Press reported that Hilton shared a news-video clip on Instagram showing the destroyed property. CNN also reported that she learned the home had been lost while watching the fire’s destruction unfold on live television.
The available reporting supports describing the property as Hilton’s Malibu home. It does not establish an exact value, address, insurance settlement or ownership arrangement, so those details should not be inferred.

Billy and Janice Crystal’s Pacific Palisades home
Billy Crystal and his wife, Janice, lost their Pacific Palisades home in the Palisades Fire. The couple had lived there for approximately 45 years, making the loss more than the destruction of a celebrity property: it was the loss of a longtime family home filled with decades of memories.
The Associated Press reported the couple’s statement about the destruction. The home should be described as the Crystals’ longtime residence, rather than reduced to a generic celebrity mansion.
J.J. Redick’s family rental home
J.J. Redick’s family lost its rental home in Pacific Palisades, according to ESPN reporting. Later coverage described Redick grieving the loss of both the home and the surrounding community.
The distinction between a rental and an owned residence is important: the reporting identifies the property as a rental home. It should not be described as a house Redick owned.

Early coverage also described celebrities evacuating, facing threats to their properties or waiting to learn whether their homes had survived. Those situations are not the same as confirmed destruction. A threatened or evacuated home should not be placed in the same category as a property that the owner, an authorized representative or a reliable news report confirmed was lost.
The celebrity losses were part of a much larger disaster
The fires destroyed homes across communities in Los Angeles County, affecting residents, renters, businesses and public institutions—not only well-known people. Celebrity accounts made the destruction visible to a large audience, but they were individual examples of a disaster experienced by thousands of other families.
Damage totals changed as inspections and reporting progressed. According to a Los Angeles County impact dashboard figure reported in May 2026, the Eaton and Palisades fires together had:
- Burned approximately 37,469 acres;
- Destroyed approximately 16,255 structures; and
- Forced approximately 205,000 people to leave their homes at the height of the emergency.
Those figures are specifically for the combined Eaton and Palisades fires and should be date-stamped. They are not interchangeable with every total published about the broader January 2025 Southern California fire outbreak.
For comparison, an earlier Los Angeles County update from January 2025 listed 9,418 destroyed structures while assessments were still under way. That difference illustrates why undated figures from the first days of a disaster can conflict with later totals.

The U.S. Geological Survey separately summarized the broader Greater Los Angeles wildfire impact as more than 40,000 acres burned, more than 12,300 structures destroyed and evacuation orders or warnings affecting as many as 200,000 residents. That summary covers a broader grouping than the county’s Eaton-and-Palisades total, so the numbers should not be combined without explaining the different scope.
What the fires show about evacuation preparedness
The destruction of a home in a fast-moving, wind-driven wildfire cannot be reduced to whether someone owned a particular alarm, extinguisher or fire-resistant container. No consumer product can guarantee that a home will survive a large wildland fire. Evacuation orders, official alerts, transportation planning and timely departure are more important than any single item.

FEMA guidance also recommends keeping basic supplies ready and protecting important documents with physical or electronic backups.
Preparedness note: what belongs in a wildfire go-bag?
A wildfire emergency kit can help with evacuation logistics, but it is not home protection. A practical bag may include drinking water, essential medicines, identification, chargers, a flashlight, first-aid supplies, copies of important information, pet supplies and several days of basic necessities. Keep it accessible and review it regularly.
Important records should also be backed up electronically where possible. A fireproof document bag may be useful for organizing physical papers, but it is not a substitute for digital backups, insurance records or an evacuation plan—and no container should be represented as guaranteed protection in a major wildfire.
For home-fire detection, working smoke alarms remain important. However, smoke alarms address fires inside a home and are not a defense against a wind-driven wildfire approaching from outside.

Reports about celebrity homes often spread quickly during a disaster, when conditions and property information are still changing. The most accurate accounts distinguish among several different situations:
Rank #4
- First Alert's Precision Detection advanced sensing technology complies with new industry standards to reduce cooking nuisance alarms and provides early warning in the event of a home fire emergency
- Battery-operated alarm allows for easy installation and maintenance
- Front access battery compartment makes for easy battery replacements
- End-of-life warning lets you know when it’s time to replace the alarm
- Test/silence button for efficient testing to ensure alarm is working properly
| Situation | Accurate wording |
|---|---|
| Reliable reporting confirms the home was destroyed | “The home was destroyed,” “the family lost its home,” or “the property was reported lost.” |
| The resident evacuated or the property was threatened | “The person evacuated,” “the home was threatened,” or “the status was uncertain at the time.” |
| The person lived in a rental | “The family’s rental home was lost,” not “the person’s owned house.” |
| Damage totals were reported during the emergency | Include the date and geographic scope of the estimate. |
That precision respects both the people directly affected and the scale of the wider disaster. Hilton’s Malibu loss, the Crystals’ decades-long connection to their Palisades home and the Redick family’s loss of a rental residence are all significant stories—but none should obscure the thousands of other residents whose homes and livelihoods were also destroyed.

The homes discussed were associated with the Palisades Fire, including Hilton’s Malibu property and the Pacific Palisades homes connected to the Crystals and Redick’s family. The Eaton Fire was a separate major fire included in the county’s combined disaster totals.
How many structures were destroyed in the Palisades and Eaton fires?
A Los Angeles County impact figure reported in May 2026 put the combined total at approximately 16,255 destroyed structures and approximately 37,469 acres burned. Earlier figures were lower because damage inspections were still in progress.
The Bottom Line
Paris Hilton, Billy Crystal and Janice Crystal, and J.J. Redick’s family were among the public figures who lost homes in the January 2025 Los Angeles-area fires. Their stories underscored the reach of the Palisades and Eaton fires, but the disaster affected far more than celebrities: county figures later recorded approximately 16,255 destroyed structures and 205,000 people displaced at the height of the emergency.
