Choose Reacher for action and crime, Lanterns for a superhero mystery, Women in Blue for international police drama, My Brilliant Career for literary period romance or Tires for adult workplace comedy. This U.S.-focused guide also includes 10 shows that premiered between August 5 and August 10 and are therefore among the best new or newly available options to catch up on this week.
Release dates and episode drops are not uniform. Some of this week’s best choices arrive as complete binges, while Reacher and Women in Blue begin weekly runs. Lanterns starts its HBO/HBO Max rollout on Sunday night. The distinction matters if you are deciding whether to start one show now, save several hours for a weekend binge or avoid beginning a series that will make you wait between episodes.
All dates below follow the U.S. schedule. Netflix, Prime Video, Apple TV and HBO/HBO Max availability can differ in other countries, and August 2026 release information is subject to change.

Jack Reacher’s fourth season begins when a disturbing encounter on a New York subway pulls him into a deadly conspiracy. The season adapts Lee Child’s Gone Tomorrow, giving the new run a specific piece of source material while retaining the larger appeal of an isolated investigator pushed into a dangerous case.
Prime Video is releasing the first three episodes together on August 12, followed by weekly episodes through September 16. That makes Reacher the strongest choice for viewers who want an immediate sample of the season without having the entire story available on day one. Season 4 is a continuation rather than a brand-new franchise, so it is best suited to existing fans or viewers willing to catch up on the earlier seasons.
Season 4 adapts Lee Child’s Gone Tomorrow; the novel is optional source material, not a prerequisite for enjoying the series, but it offers readers a way to compare the television adaptation with the book behind this case.
2. Women in Blue Season 2 — Apple TV, August 12
Best for: viewers looking for a Spanish-language police drama with historical stakes.
Recommended Free Tools
Apple’s Mexican crime drama returns with María now serving as a lieutenant. The Azules investigate a series of killings connected to Mexico’s 1968 student massacre, placing the police case inside a much larger story about political memory, institutional power and unresolved violence.
The first episode arrives August 12, with one new episode each week through September 30. Its weekly schedule makes it a good alternative to the binge releases dominating Netflix this week, particularly for viewers who prefer a mystery that can be discussed and considered over several weeks rather than consumed in one sitting.
3. My Brilliant Career — Netflix, August 13
Best for: viewers who prefer literary drama, period settings and a protagonist determined to define her own life.
This six-episode Australian period drama follows Sybylla, a young woman who wants to become a writer rather than accept the conventional marriage expected of her. Romance complicates that ambition, but the central question is whether she will surrender her creative independence or insist on a different future.

- TV, simplified: With setup that only takes minutes, a simple-to-navigate Home Screen, and an uncluttered remote control that does all you need—Roku makes it easier to watch the TV you love.
Netflix releases all six episodes on August 13, making this the week’s clearest choice for a complete weekend binge. It is a more intimate and literary option than the crime, superhero and workplace-comedy premieres surrounding it.
4. Tires Season 3 — Netflix, August 13
Best for: viewers who want an irreverent adult comedy built around workplace dysfunction and family friction.
Shane Gillis and Steve Gerben return as cousins and co-owners of Valley Forge Automotive, a struggling repair shop where business problems and personal tensions constantly collide. The premise leaves plenty of room for workplace chaos, bad decisions and the particular discomfort that comes from having family members as business partners.
All 12 episodes arrive on Netflix August 13. That unusually large episode drop makes Season 3 one of the week’s biggest binge opportunities and a natural counterprogramming choice for anyone who does not want another serious mystery or relationship drama.

Best for: viewers who want a grounded detective story that gradually opens into superhero and cosmic territory.
DC Studios’ eight-episode drama pairs Kyle Chandler’s veteran Hal Jordan with Aaron Pierre’s rookie John Stewart. The two investigate a murder in the American heartland, only to find that the case has implications far beyond the local community.
Lanterns debuts Sunday, August 16, at 9 p.m. ET/PT on HBO and HBO Max. The setup makes it distinct from a conventional costumed-hero adventure: the initial draw is the partnership and investigation, while the cosmic dimension expands the story’s scope. Because it is beginning a scheduled HBO/Max run rather than arriving as a complete box set, viewers should expect a longer-form rollout.

Sterling Point — Prime Video, premiered August 5
Best for: teen mystery and romance.
Seventeen-year-old Annie Jacobson inherits a remote Canadian island from an estranged grandfather, opening the door to family secrets and a mystery tied to the isolated setting. The eight-episode season is available as a binge, making it a useful pick for viewers who want a teen-focused story they can finish without waiting for weekly installments.

Best for: faith-oriented reality television and wilderness adventure.
This six-episode unscripted series places cast members from The Chosen in demanding wilderness environments with Bear Grylls. It is a fundamentally different proposition from the scripted dramas in this guide: the appeal comes from physical challenge, outdoor survival and seeing familiar performers outside their usual roles. The episodes are available as a binge.
The Shards — FX and Hulu, premiered August 5
Best for: viewers who want a darker coming-of-age story.
Based on Bret Easton Ellis’s novel, the series follows privileged Los Angeles high-school students in 1980s California as identity, sex, jealousy and danger become increasingly entangled. It provides a substantially more unsettling teen option than Sterling Point or My Life with the Walter Boys, and is better approached as a dark drama than as a conventional young-adult romance.
My Life with the Walter Boys Season 3 — Netflix, premiered August 6
Best for: viewers already invested in the teen romance and family drama.
Netflix released all 10 episodes of the third season on August 6. This is a continuation pick rather than a standalone introduction, so viewers unfamiliar with the earlier story should begin with Season 1. For returning fans, the full-season drop makes it one of the easiest shows on the list to turn into a weekend catch-up.

Alley Cats — Netflix, premiered August 7
Best for: adults who want irreverent animated comedy.
Ricky Gervais’s six-episode adult animated series follows feral British cats dealing with companionship and everyday problems. Its premise gives the week a deliberately odd, comedic alternative to the dramas and competition shows, and all six episodes are available to watch together.
Somebody Knows Something — Freeform, premiered August 10
Best for: true-crime viewers and fans of investigative nonfiction.
The two-episode premiere follows true-crime influencer Kara Chamberlain as she investigates unsolved murders and missing-person cases. This is the clearest choice for viewers whose priority is real-world investigation rather than scripted suspense. Since the August 10 launch is a two-episode premiere, check the ongoing Freeform schedule before assuming the entire series is available.
Honest Renovations Season 4 — The Roku Channel, August 14
Best for: home-improvement and lifestyle television.
The fourth season arrives as a three-episode binge on August 14. It broadens this week’s choices beyond scripted entertainment, making it a practical option for viewers who want renovation projects, household transformations and reality programming instead of another crime or relationship plot.

The long-running Apple comedy returned August 5. Its inclusion is important for fans who follow Apple TV’s returning series, but it should not be confused with a new show or a first-season entry. Viewers who have not watched the earlier seasons will get more from beginning at the start than by treating this as a standalone recommendation.
Star Wars: Visions Presents – The Ninth Jedi — Disney+ and Hulu, premiered August 5
Best for: viewers who want franchise animation in a self-contained format.
This eight-episode animated binge follows Lah Kara and her Jedi training. It is the week’s major Star Wars option and a straightforward choice for fans who want a new animated story without committing to a live-action series. The presentation also makes it suitable for viewers interested in a contained franchise tale rather than another long-running continuity-heavy show.

The Challenge Season 42 — Paramount+, premiered August 5
Best for: established competition-reality fans.
The latest season supplies a competition format in a week otherwise dominated by scripted drama and comedy. Season 42 is most naturally aimed at existing The Challenge viewers who already understand the franchise’s format and personalities; it is less useful as an entry point for someone searching for a first reality-competition series.
