Spoiler warning: This retrospective guide reveals the hints and answers for the Saturday, September 6, 2025, NYT Connections puzzle, game #818. If you are still solving, start with the word list and progressive hints below, then stop before the answer section.
How NYT Connections works
NYT Connections gives you 16 words and asks you to sort them into four groups of four. Each group has a shared connection, with the categories presented in increasing difficulty: yellow, green, blue, and purple. You can make a maximum of four incorrect guesses, so it is usually best to identify the most certain group before committing to a tempting but broad association.
The puzzle is published daily and resets at midnight in the player’s local time zone. Because September 6, 2025 has already passed, the answers below are a retrospective record of puzzle #818.

Connections #818 answers for September 6, 2025
Spoilers begin here. The four groups were:
Yellow: RUPTURED
BLEW, BROKE, BURST, SPLIT
Each of these words can describe something breaking apart, bursting, or separating. “Blew” can describe an object bursting or blowing apart; “broke,” “burst,” and “split” are more direct descriptions of a rupture.
Green: APPARITION
SHADE, SPECTER, SPIRIT, WIGHT
These words can all refer to a ghost, ghostlike being, or other supernatural presence. Specter and apparition are especially direct, while shade, spirit, and wight can describe a ghostly figure or entity.
Rank #2
Blue: PREDICT
CALL, DIVINE, FORECAST, READ
All four can be used as verbs meaning to predict or foretell. You can call an outcome, divine what will happen, forecast a future event, or read signs to make a prediction.
Purple: “BEST ___ PERFORMANCE” GRAMMY AWARD
AMERICANA, CHORAL, JAZZ, RAP
These words complete GRAMMY category names: Best Americana Performance, Best Choral Performance, Best Jazz Performance, and Best Rap Performance.

Rank #3
This was the puzzle’s main misdirection. The four words look like broad music-related terms, but the intended connection is more specific: each fits the wording of a “Best ___ Performance” GRAMMY award category. That makes purple harder to spot than a simple “music genres” label suggests.
Why this puzzle could be tricky
The yellow and green groups become fairly clear once the possible meanings of the words are considered, but the board contains several terms that can fit more than one broad theme. The purple words are all associated with music, yet “music” alone is not the complete connection. Recognizing the GRAMMY award-title pattern is the key step.
Rank #4
The blue group also depends on using the words as prediction verbs. It is not a group of people who tell fortunes or a collection of nouns related to prophecy; call, divine, forecast, and read can each mean to predict something.
Outside reviews differed on the puzzle’s difficulty. One retrospective assessment described it as easy, while another called it medium difficulty and considered purple comparatively tricky. Those are reviewer impressions, not an official NYT difficulty rating.
