Hackman, Arakawa and one of their dogs were found at their Santa Fe residence on February 26, 2025, after a welfare check was requested because of concerns about the couple’s lack of contact. Authorities initially described the circumstances as unusual and began a thorough investigation. Preliminary examinations found no external trauma.
Some early coverage used the word “suspicious,” reflecting language associated with search-warrant material and the unusual scene. The Santa Fe County Sheriff’s Office said that foul play was not currently suspected. At that stage, however, the causes of death had not been established.
The later medical findings changed the picture. The deaths were ultimately classified as natural-cause deaths rather than homicide. Betsy Arakawa
New Mexico officials announced on March 7, 2025, that Betsy Arakawa died from hantavirus pulmonary syndrome. Hantavirus pulmonary syndrome is a serious illness associated with exposure to infected rodents and can cause severe respiratory disease. The official finding identified the disease as Arakawa’s cause of death.
Gene Hackman
Officials said Hackman died approximately a week later from cardiovascular disease. Later autopsy reporting released in late April added that he had cardiovascular disease, a history of congestive heart failure, severe chronic hypertensive kidney changes and a pacemaker.
The final reporting also documented neurodegenerative features consistent with Alzheimer’s disease. The chief medical examiner said Hackman’s advanced Alzheimer’s disease made it possible that he did not understand that Arakawa had died. That is a medical examiner’s assessment of a possibility, not a definitive account of Hackman’s conscious experience.
His toxicology findings included acetone levels consistent with prolonged fasting. Later reporting on the medical investigation also said carbon monoxide poisoning was ruled out as the cause of death.
The available findings do not support claims that the family revealed the causes of death in its initial statement. The causes came from New Mexico officials and the Office of the Medical Investigator after the investigation and medical examinations.
