All of Us Strangers is Andrew Haigh’s 2023 supernatural relationship drama about a lonely screenwriter who finds love in a nearly empty London tower block while being drawn back to the suburban home of his childhood. There, his dead parents appear to him as they were around the time of their deaths.
The film is not primarily a horror mystery, and its ghosts are not presented with a single, neatly confirmed explanation. They give physical form to grief, memory, fear, longing, and the conversations Adam never had with his parents. At the same time, his romance with Harry becomes inseparable from his struggle to believe that he can be known—and loved—as a gay man.
Warning: The discussion below contains major spoilers, including the film’s ending and its central supernatural revelation.
What is All of Us Strangers about?
Adam, played by Andrew Scott, is a screenwriter living alone in a largely unoccupied London tower block. His routine is interrupted when Harry, a younger neighbor played by Paul Mescal, approaches him. What begins as an awkward encounter gradually develops into an intimate relationship between two men who are both carrying forms of loneliness.

Adam is also unable to stop returning to the house where he grew up. When he arrives there, he encounters his parents, Dad and Mum, played by Jamie Bell and Claire Foy. They appear to be living as they did roughly 30 years earlier, around the time they died, while Adam stands before them as the adult son they never had the chance to see grow up.
The two strands—Adam’s relationship with Harry and his meetings with his parents—are not separate plots. Each forces Adam to confront the same question: can he accept love without first assuming that it will be taken away?
That makes the film a blend of romantic drama, family melodrama, ghost story, and grief narrative. It uses supernatural events to dramatize emotional truths rather than to construct a detailed mythology about how ghosts work.
Why the ghosts matter
Adam’s parents are not frightening apparitions in the conventional horror sense. They are recognizable as the parents he remembers: loving, limited, concerned, and shaped by the social world in which they lived. Their return gives Adam an impossible opportunity to ask questions that remained suspended after their deaths.

He can tell them about the adult life they never witnessed. He can reveal his sexuality. He can test the fear that has shaped his understanding of them: that his parents would not accept him if they knew who he really was.
The film does not reduce this fear to a simple story of openly hateful parents. Mum and Dad are presented as caring people whose capacity to understand their son is constrained by their generation, assumptions, and lack of experience. That distinction is important. Adam’s pain does not require his parents to have been monsters. Sometimes grief is created by love that was genuine but unable to reach every part of a person.
The supernatural premise makes that emotional problem visible. Adam is not merely remembering his parents; he is encountering versions of them at the age and moment associated with their deaths. He, meanwhile, has accumulated decades of knowledge, shame, desire, and regret. The encounters therefore collapse two different times: the past in which his parents are fixed and the present in which Adam continues to change.
Is the supernatural explanation ever confirmed?
No single explanation is definitively established. The film supports a literal reading in which Adam is encountering the spirits of his dead parents, but it also allows the events to be understood as a psychological, memory-driven, or creative experience. Andrew Haigh has acknowledged that Adam’s work as a screenwriter creates a further possibility: the story may reflect the way he is processing his own life through art.

The most accurate way to discuss the ghosts is therefore to separate what happens in the film from what those events mean. Adam goes to the childhood home. His parents appear. He speaks with them and reveals parts of himself. Those are plot events. Whether the figures are literal ghosts, embodiments of memory, or manifestations of Adam’s creative and emotional process is an interpretive question.
This ambiguity is not a problem the film forgot to solve. It is part of its design. A mechanically precise explanation would shift attention away from the emotional experience: Adam is finally able to speak to the people whose absence has structured his life.
Adam, Harry, and the fear of being known
Harry initially appears more impulsive and exposed than Adam. He approaches Adam directly, drinks heavily, and seems to want immediate connection. Adam is more guarded. His reserve is not simply shyness; it reflects a life organized around anticipated loss and rejection.
The romance becomes powerful because Harry and Adam need different things from intimacy. Harry wants contact in the present, while Adam is still living among the emotional consequences of the past. Adam’s parents died before they could know him as an adult, and his fear of parental rejection has become part of his fear of romantic vulnerability.

His presence tests whether Adam can stop treating closeness as a temporary exception. The relationship offers Adam a future, but the future is difficult to imagine while he remains emotionally attached to the unfinished business of childhood.
The film’s treatment of queer identity is especially painful because it avoids a simplistic coming-out narrative. Adam’s parents are not given a dramatic transformation into either perfect allies or cruel antagonists. Instead, the film explores the quieter damage caused by not knowing how someone might respond—and by carrying that uncertainty long after the people involved are gone.
The ending explained
Near the end of the film, Adam’s experiences with Harry and his parents converge. The apparent romance with Harry becomes bound up with the film’s larger exploration of death, isolation, and the need to be recognized. Adam’s parents come to understand that the son before them is not the child they lost, but the adult he became. Their scenes with him provide a form of belated recognition that ordinary time could not supply.
The ending is devastating because it does not treat recognition as a cure for grief. Adam can receive love from his parents in the impossible space the film creates, but he cannot return to the life he might have had with them. The past can be revisited; it cannot be restored.

Harry’s role in the ending is similarly open to interpretation. One reading understands the events literally: the film’s supernatural world allows Adam and Harry to remain together beyond ordinary physical life. Another sees the final movement as Adam’s mind making emotional sense of a relationship shaped by loneliness, fear, and the desire for permanence. A third reading treats the entire structure as a piece of Adam’s creative processing, with the screenplay inside the film echoing the film we are watching.
None of these readings cancels out the others. The ending’s emotional conclusion is clearer than its metaphysics: Adam’s deepest wish is not simply to find a partner or speak to his parents. He wants to stop being alone inside the knowledge of what he has lost.
Memory and the structure of time
All of Us Strangers is closer to a memory drama than to a conventional time-travel story. Adam does not travel through history to alter an event. He returns repeatedly to a place where the emotional past has become accessible.
The film places two homes at the center of this structure. The almost-empty tower block represents Adam’s present-day isolation: a modern environment full of rooms but nearly devoid of ordinary community. The suburban family home represents a more crowded emotional past, even though the people who made it a home are dead.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsThat contrast is interpretive rather than a literal statement from the production, but it helps explain the film’s visual and emotional design. The tower block feels suspended between domestic life and institutional emptiness. The childhood house is familiar, intimate, and impossible. Adam moves between them as though moving between two versions of himself.
Repetition is equally important. Adam returns to the same spaces, repeats old patterns of hesitation, and approaches painful revelations indirectly. The film suggests that grief is not a straight line from loss to recovery. It is an ongoing relationship with an absent person, one that can become newly painful when the survivor reaches an age or stage of life the dead never experienced.
Andrew Haigh’s adaptation of Strangers
The film is based on Strangers by Japanese writer Taichi Yamada. The original novel, published in Japan in 1987 under the title Ijintachi tono natsu, was translated into English in 2003 by Wayne P. Lammers. Its basic premise also involves a writer encountering parents who are supposed to be dead.
Haigh’s film is best described as a personalized adaptation, not a literal transfer of the novel to the screen. It relocates the story from Japan to London and reshapes the central character around Adam’s queer identity, his family history, and the emotional pressures of contemporary loneliness. The ghost-story structure remains, but the adaptation’s focus is less on supernatural mechanics than on recognition, sexuality, and grief.

For readers interested in comparing the two works, Strangers by Taichi Yamada is the relevant source novel. The book is a metaphysical ghost story, while Haigh’s version makes the material more explicitly autobiographical in feeling and more closely tied to queer experience.
Andrew Scott and Paul Mescal’s performances
Andrew Scott carries Adam’s interiority through restraint. Much of the character’s pain appears in pauses, unfinished sentences, and the visible difficulty of accepting affection. Adam often seems to be observing his own life from a slight distance, a quality that fits both his profession as a writer and his emotional disconnection.
Paul Mescal gives Harry a different energy. Harry is impulsive and vulnerable, but his directness is not the same as emotional security. He can move toward Adam quickly while still appearing uncertain about what he is entitled to ask for. The contrast between the two men creates the film’s romantic tension: Adam is afraid of being abandoned, while Harry appears afraid that he will not be allowed fully into Adam’s life.
Jamie Bell and Claire Foy avoid turning Adam’s parents into symbolic figures only. Their performances preserve their ordinariness. They are parents with habits, affection, blind spots, and the limited perspective of people who do not know what the future contains. That ordinariness makes their encounters with Adam more affecting than a more theatrical ghost-story treatment would have been.

Haigh wrote and directed the film. His earlier work, including Weekend and 45 Years, is often useful as a comparison point because those films also examine intimacy, time, aging, memory, and relationships under pressure. That comparison should be understood as critical interpretation rather than a claim that every film in his career has the same meaning or method.
In All of Us Strangers, his approach is especially apparent in the way large emotional revelations emerge through private conversations. The film does not need elaborate exposition to explain Adam. It lets the pressure of proximity do the work: a neighbor comes close, parents reappear, and the character’s carefully maintained distance becomes impossible to sustain.

It contains ghosts, but calling All of Us Strangers a conventional horror film can create the wrong expectations. It is not driven mainly by jump scares, supernatural rules, investigation, or a threat that must be defeated.
A more precise description is supernatural romantic drama or ghost story about grief. The film borrows the ghost story’s ability to make the dead present, but its central question is emotional rather than forensic: what would you say if the people you lost could hear you now?

Where to watch and how to own it
Searchlight’s promotional materials associate the film with Hulu, but streaming availability is volatile. It can change by country, subscription tier, licensing agreement, and date. Disney+’s U.S. help information also explains that eligible Hulu content may be available through Disney+ for users with certain Hulu or bundle plans; that does not prove that this specific film is available to every U.S. subscriber. Check the current listing in your territory before subscribing or renting.
For physical media, Criterion lists a director-approved two-disc All of Us Strangers Criterion 4K UHD Blu-ray edition and a one-disc Blu-ray edition. The 4K package includes a 4K digital master with Dolby Vision HDR, a Blu-ray containing the film and supplements, a conversation between Andrew Haigh and Michael Koresky, an interview with cinematographer Jamie D. Ramsay, behind-the-scenes material, featurettes, a trailer, accessibility subtitles, descriptive audio, and an essay by Guy Lodge.
The standard All of Us Strangers Criterion Blu-ray is the more practical choice for viewers without a 4K setup, while the UHD package is aimed at collectors and viewers who want the highest-resolution presentation available in that release. Criterion’s page listed suggested retail prices of $49.95 for the 4K UHD plus Blu-ray edition and $39.95 for the Blu-ray edition when accessed, but those are not live retailer prices and should not be treated as current stock or sale information.
A 4K edition also requires compatible hardware: a 4K UHD Blu-ray player, a compatible display, and—if you want the format’s full image benefits—support for Dolby Vision HDR. The regular Blu-ray disc does not require a 4K player.

Watch it if you want a quiet, emotionally intense film about grief that is willing to leave its supernatural premise unresolved. It will especially appeal to viewers drawn to intimate queer cinema, family dramas about missed recognition, literary ghost stories, and romances in which emotional history matters as much as present-day chemistry.
Approach it cautiously if you are looking for a conventional horror film, a tightly explained fantasy system, or a romance whose primary purpose is escapism. The film is tender, but it is also grief-heavy. Its central pleasures come from performance, atmosphere, conversation, and interpretation rather than plot mechanics.
Frequently Asked Questions
Is All of Us Strangers based on a true story?
No. It is based on Taichi Yamada’s novel Strangers. Andrew Haigh adapted and personalized the premise, relocating it to London and placing Adam’s queer identity and family history at the center.
Are Adam’s parents really ghosts?
The film does not provide one definitive answer. They can be understood as literal ghosts, figures created by memory or grief, or part of Adam’s creative and psychological processing. The ambiguity is intentional.

All of Us Strangers is best understood as a film about the emotional afterlife of family: the parents we lose, the selves we hide, and the love we may struggle to accept in the present.
