The most reliable way to set up Netflix parental controls is to use separate profiles: create a child-specific or Netflix Kids profile, set its maturity rating, block individual titles when necessary, and lock every unrestricted adult profile with a PIN. Use a web browser for the full set of controls; TVs and streaming devices may not expose every setting.

How Netflix parental controls work

Netflix does not rely on one universal household filter for every viewer. Its current system is primarily profile-based. Each profile can have its own maturity level, blocked-title list, and—where appropriate—a Profile Lock PIN.

For a young child, the strongest practical setup is:

  1. Create a dedicated Netflix Kids or child profile.
  2. Set the profile’s permitted maturity level.
  3. Block specific shows or films that are unsuitable despite their broader rating.
  4. Lock adult profiles so the child cannot switch to an unrestricted profile.
  5. Require the main profile’s PIN before anyone can create another profile.

These controls govern Netflix viewing. They do not replace parental controls on a phone, tablet, smart TV, game console, operating system, router, or home network.

Before you begin

  • Have access to the Netflix account password or the identity-verification method Netflix requests.
  • Keep the account password private. Anyone who knows it may be able to change parental-control settings.
  • Use a current web browser if possible. The browser interface exposes more settings than many TVs and streaming devices.
  • Decide whether the child needs a simplified Kids experience or a regular profile with a custom maturity limit.

1. Create a Netflix Kids profile

A Netflix Kids profile is usually the best starting point for a young child. It has a simplified interface, a Kids-profile indicator, no direct access to account settings, no profile email sign-in, and a catalog selected for children. Netflix also says games are not displayed in the Netflix Kids experience.

From a TV or streaming device

  1. Open Netflix and go to the profile-selection screen.
  2. Choose Add Profile+.
  3. Enter the child’s name.
  4. Select the Kids option when it is offered.
  5. Save the profile and select it when the child watches Netflix.

From Android, iPhone, or iPad

  1. Open the Netflix app.
  2. Tap My Netflix.
  3. Tap the current profile name.
  4. Choose Manage Profiles.
  5. Add a profile and select the Kids option if available.

From a web browser

  1. Open Netflix and go to Manage Profiles.
  2. Choose Add Profile.
  3. Enter a profile name.
  4. Select the Kids option when offered.
  5. Save the profile.

The main profile cannot be converted into a Kids profile. Create a separate profile instead. A standard Netflix account can have up to five profiles, although extra-member arrangements may have different profile limitations.

2. Set the child’s maturity rating

A maturity setting limits the shows, films, and games that the selected profile can display. The profile will show content at or below the maturity level you choose.

Ratings and catalog availability vary by country, so the labels and titles visible in your account may not match those shown in another country. Choose the level that fits the child rather than assuming that a title’s availability or rating is universal.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Set the rating in a web browser

  1. Open the Netflix Account page.
  2. Open Profiles.
  3. Select the child’s profile.
  4. Choose Adjust parental controls.
  5. Verify your identity with the account password or the code Netflix requests.
  6. Select the desired maturity level.
  7. Choose Save.

Set the rating in the mobile app

  1. Open My Netflix.
  2. Tap the profile name.
  3. Choose Manage Profiles.
  4. Select the child’s profile.
  5. Open Viewing Restrictions.
  6. Choose Maturity Rating.
  7. Verify your identity, select the limit, and save.

If a title disappears after you lower the rating, that is normally expected. The profile may also stop displaying games or other content above the selected limit.

3. Block individual shows and movies

Maturity ratings are broad categories. Use Title Restrictions or Block Titles when a child may watch most content within the selected category but should not watch one particular show or film.

Block a title in a web browser

  1. Open Account.
  2. Go to Profiles.
  3. Choose the relevant profile.
  4. Select Adjust parental controls.
  5. Open Title Restrictions.
  6. Verify your identity.
  7. Type the show’s or film’s name.
  8. Select the title and save the restriction.

Block a title in the mobile app

  1. Open My Netflix.
  2. Tap the profile name.
  3. Choose Manage Profiles.
  4. Select the profile.
  5. Open Viewing Restrictions.
  6. Choose Block Titles.
  7. Search for and select the title.

Blocked titles are removed from that profile. Netflix notes that only the first 100 blocked titles are displayed in the list, although additional titles can still be blocked and found later by searching.

Blocking a title is more precise than lowering the entire maturity level. It is useful when a child is ready for most content at a particular rating but a parent has a specific concern about one film, series, character, theme, or franchise.

4. Lock adult profiles with a Profile Lock PIN

A child can bypass a restriction simply by selecting an unrestricted adult profile unless those profiles are protected. A Profile Lock PIN is a four-digit code that prevents access to a locked profile. A locked profile displays a lock icon on Netflix’s profile-selection screen.

Set a Profile Lock PIN

  1. Open the Netflix account’s profile settings in a web browser.
  2. Select the adult profile you want to protect.
  3. Choose Profile Lock.
  4. Verify your identity.
  5. Create and save a four-digit PIN.

Protect every unrestricted profile the child could select, not just the child’s profile. If one adult profile remains open, that profile may provide an easy route around the child’s maturity and title restrictions.

On older or unsupported devices, Netflix may not ask for the PIN immediately when someone enters the locked profile. It may request the PIN only when the user tries to watch content. Some browsers may also reopen the last-used profile automatically. These behaviors do not necessarily mean that the Profile Lock failed.

5. Require a PIN before new profiles can be created

A child may otherwise work around the restrictions by creating a new, unrestricted profile. Netflix lets the main profile require its Profile Lock PIN before anyone can add another profile.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  1. Open Netflix’s Account page in a browser.
  2. Go to Profiles.
  3. Select the main profile.
  4. Choose Profile Lock.
  5. Verify your identity.
  6. Select Require PIN to add new profiles.
  7. Save the setting.

This option is available only for the main profile. It works alongside the individual profile locks and viewing restrictions.

6. Understand Netflix’s two parental-control systems

Netflix documents both newer profile-level controls and an older account-level PIN arrangement.

System How it works Important consideration
Profile-level controls Restrictions and profile locks can be customized for individual profiles. Usually the clearest arrangement for households with viewers of different ages.
Account-level PIN controls A single PIN can protect account-wide maturity or title restrictions. Changing to the newer profile-level system removes the existing account-level PIN, and Netflix says there is no option to return to the former single-PIN setup.

Because changing systems can alter how restrictions are enforced, review every profile after Netflix moves the account to profile-level controls or after you change the parental-control model. Confirm the child’s maturity level, blocked titles, adult-profile locks, and new-profile protection.

7. Turn off autoplay previews if you want a quieter interface

Autoplay previews are a playback preference, not a parental-control filter. Turning them off can reduce unsolicited trailers and previews, but it does not prevent a child from opening content that the profile is allowed to watch.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

In a web browser

  1. Open Account.
  2. Go to Profiles.
  3. Select the profile.
  4. Open Playback settings.
  5. Turn Autoplay previews off.

In the mobile app

  1. Open My Netflix.
  2. Tap the profile name.
  3. Choose Manage Profiles.
  4. Select the profile.
  5. Turn off the autoplay-preview setting.

Netflix says some iPads and older TVs or TV streaming devices do not support preview autoplay. You can also review the separate automatic-next-episode setting if you want to reduce continuous playback, but that setting does not filter content.

Browser, mobile, TV, and streaming-device differences

Use a browser for the initial setup and for troubleshooting. A TV or streaming device is convenient for creating a profile, but some account and parental-control settings may not be available there. Mobile apps expose many controls through My Netflix → profile name → Manage Profiles, but the exact labels can vary by app version, device, country, and Netflix account configuration.

After changing restrictions, refresh the device if the old settings still appear. Netflix recommends switching to another profile and back, or signing out and signing in again. In some cases, closing and reopening the app or restarting the device may also be necessary.

How to check what a child has watched

Netflix provides a viewing-history check in a web browser:

Account → Profiles → Viewing activity

Viewing activity can help you discuss what a child has watched or identify unexpected use of a profile. It is not a substitute for maturity restrictions, blocked titles, or locked adult profiles: it reports activity after the fact rather than preventing access.

Troubleshooting Netflix parental controls

A child can still access adult content

  1. Confirm the child is using the restricted profile.
  2. Set a Profile Lock PIN on every unrestricted adult profile.
  3. Protect the main profile.
  4. Enable Require PIN to add new profiles on the main profile.
  5. Keep the Netflix account password private.
  6. Refresh Netflix by switching profiles or signing out and back in.

The profile does not ask for a PIN

Some older or unsupported devices may request the PIN only when the user attempts to watch content. A browser may also reopen the last-used profile. Test the lock by trying to open protected content, then update the Netflix app or use a supported device if the behavior remains confusing.

A show or movie is missing

Check the profile’s maturity level and its blocked-title list first. Netflix also identifies country rights, profile language, and VPN use as possible reasons that a title may not appear. A missing title is therefore not proof that a parental-control setting removed it.

A restriction has not appeared on a device

Switch to another profile and back, or sign out and sign in again. If necessary, close and reopen the app or restart the device. Changes made in a browser may take a short time to appear across already-open Netflix sessions.

A child creates a new profile

On the main profile, enable Require PIN to add new profiles. Also lock the main profile and other adult profiles. If the account still uses an older account-level PIN arrangement, review whether moving to profile-level controls is appropriate; Netflix says the change removes the old account-level PIN and cannot be reversed.

What Netflix controls do—and do not—cover

Netflix’s native settings can restrict content within Netflix profiles, prevent access to locked profiles, and make it harder to create bypass profiles. They do not control:

  • Other streaming services or websites.
  • Web browsing outside Netflix.
  • Apps installed on a phone, tablet, smart TV, or game console.
  • Downloads, messages, or social-media use on another device.
  • Internet access at the router or home-network level.
  • What a child sees when using another person’s Netflix account.

If the goal is device-wide or home-network protection, that is a separate project involving the relevant device, operating system, router, or family-safety service. None of those tools is required to configure Netflix’s own controls.

Final setup checklist

  • Created a separate Kids or child profile.
  • Set the appropriate maturity rating.
  • Blocked individual titles where broad ratings were not specific enough.
  • Added a Profile Lock PIN to every unrestricted adult profile.
  • Enabled the main profile’s requirement for a PIN before adding profiles.
  • Kept the Netflix account password private.
  • Refreshed devices after changing settings.
  • Reviewed viewing activity when useful.
  • Checked device-level controls separately if the child uses more than Netflix.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can I turn Netflix’s main profile into a Kids profile?

No. Netflix requires you to create a separate profile and select the Kids option when adding it.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Are Netflix parental controls available directly on a smart TV?

Some profile options are available on TVs and streaming devices, but a web browser is the most reliable control surface. Use the browser for settings that are missing from the TV interface.

Is blocking one title better than lowering the maturity rating?

It depends on the concern. Lowering the maturity rating restricts an entire category, while blocking an individual title lets the child watch other content allowed by the profile.

Can a child bypass Netflix parental controls by creating a new profile?

They may be able to unless the main profile is configured to require its Profile Lock PIN before new profiles can be added. Lock the main profile and all unrestricted adult profiles as well.

Does turning off autoplay previews block unsuitable shows?

No. Autoplay previews are a playback preference. They reduce automatic trailers and previews but do not change which content the profile can open.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Why is a Netflix title unavailable even though I did not block it?

Check the profile’s maturity level and language settings, the title-block list, country-specific availability, and whether a VPN is in use. Netflix’s catalog differs by country.

The Bottom Line

For most families, the safest Netflix setup is a dedicated Kids or child profile with an appropriate maturity limit, individual title blocks for specific concerns, PIN locks on every adult profile, and a PIN requirement for creating new profiles. Set it up in a browser, refresh each device afterward, and remember that Netflix controls only Netflix—not the rest of the device or home network.
