Yes—but only for eligible content you previously purchased. Microsoft no longer sells new movies or television programs through Microsoft.com, the Microsoft Store on Windows, or the Microsoft Store on Xbox. If you already own a title, you can still sign in to the Microsoft Movies & TV app, open your purchased library, and download an eligible title for offline playback on a compatible Windows device.
The important limitation is that this download is a licensed, app-managed offline copy, not a normal MP4 that you can freely copy to a USB drive, move between computers, or archive independently. Download the movie through Movies & TV, choose an appropriate storage drive before downloading if Windows offers that option, and leave the downloaded content in the location managed by the app.
What you can still do with Movies & TV
Microsoft has ended sales of new movies and TV programs through its own Microsoft Store storefronts. The Movies & TV app remains relevant primarily for people who bought content before the sales shutdown. Those previously purchased titles can still be available in the app, and Microsoft says downloaded playback will continue to be available on Windows, including up to HD resolution where supported.
That does not mean Microsoft purchases have become ordinary, unrestricted video files. Microsoft’s digital-goods rules describe this content as licensed rather than sold outright. The practical distinction is:

- Transfer to another service: Microsoft does not provide a direct way to transfer purchased content to Amazon Prime Video, Apple TV, Fandango at Home, or another service.
Also keep in mind that Windows 10 Home and Pro reached the end of standard support on October 14, 2025. The operating system may continue to run, but it no longer receives normal security updates for those editions. Windows 10 LTSC editions and installations covered by separate support arrangements have different lifecycle dates.
How to download an owned movie
1. Confirm that the title is eligible
Before troubleshooting the download, establish what kind of content you are trying to access. The supported workflow is intended for a movie or TV episode that was previously purchased through Microsoft and is associated with your Microsoft account.
A title may not be downloadable if it was only rented, purchased through another service, removed from your account, restricted in your region, unavailable on the particular device, or subject to content-specific licensing rules. The end of Microsoft’s movie-sales service also means that a title you have never purchased cannot now be bought through the Microsoft Store.
2. Sign in with the purchasing account
Open the Movies & TV app in Windows and sign in with the Microsoft account used for the purchase. If the app opens but your library is empty, the most likely explanation is that you are using a different Microsoft account.
Free tools Windows power users keep installed
One-click scans. No signup required.
Open the purchased library and locate the title. Owned content can also appear in search results; select the movie or episode to open its details and playback page.
3. Start the download from inside Movies & TV
Select the title and look for the app’s download or offline-playback control. The exact wording and placement can vary by app version, content type, and whether the item is owned, rented, already downloaded, or unavailable for offline use. Do not rely on a particular button label if it is not displayed in your installation.
Allow the download to finish while the computer has a reliable connection. Afterward, use the Movies & TV app to play the title rather than expecting it to appear as a conventional file in Videos or Downloads.
Where the download is stored
Movies & TV manages its downloads as app-controlled content. Windows and the app may store the data in a protected or cache-like location rather than creating a clearly named file such as MyMovie.mp4. As a result, searching File Explorer may not reveal a playable movie file.

Do not assume there is one universal folder path. The location can depend on the Windows build, app version, account, storage configuration, and content-management rules. Even if you locate large files associated with the app, renaming, opening, or moving them is not a supported way to use the movie.
How to choose a different storage drive before downloading
If the Windows installation exposes the relevant option, you can select a drive for new content before beginning the download:
- Open Settings.
- Go to System > Storage.
- Open Advanced storage settings.
- Select Where new content is saved.
- Choose an available drive for new apps or content, where the applicable setting is shown.
The drive must be connected and available to the same Windows installation. Make sure it has enough free capacity before starting a large download. Changing the storage destination does not turn a licensed Movies & TV download into a portable backup and does not override Microsoft’s content restrictions.
If your immediate problem is insufficient capacity, an external hard drive for Windows 10 storage can provide additional space when Windows allows that drive to be selected. Treat it as capacity attached to the supported computer—not as a method for exporting or duplicating Microsoft purchases.
Quick wins for a faster PC:
Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Can you copy the movie to a USB drive or external hard drive?
No—not as a supported archive or transfer. Microsoft’s Digital Goods usage rules state that Retained Rights Video may not be copied or moved from its originally stored location. That rules out using a USB flash drive, SD card, external hard drive, or external SSD to create a freely transportable copy of a Microsoft Movies & TV purchase.
An external drive can still be useful in two different situations:
- It can provide additional Windows storage capacity if selected before the app downloads the content.
- It can store your own DRM-free video files, such as home videos or media you are legally permitted to copy.
Those uses should not be confused with exporting a Microsoft-licensed movie. Do not decrypt, defeat DRM, rename protected app files, use screen-recording software to make a replacement copy, or convert the download into an unrestricted video file. Those are not official Microsoft workflows and may violate applicable rights or service terms.
What happens if you move or delete the downloaded data?
Moving or manually deleting app-managed content can make the title unavailable to Movies & TV. If a title stops playing after files were moved, the safest recovery is to restore the original storage configuration if possible and redownload the title from inside the app. If restoration is not practical, remove the damaged local download through the app’s available controls and download it again.

A redownload is still subject to the title’s availability, your account, device limits, and Microsoft’s current licensing system. Do not assume that a manually preserved copy will remain usable after the app loses track of it.
Device limits and license refresh requirements
Microsoft’s device-association guidance says purchased content can be downloaded to up to five devices in the Windows-app guidance. Separate Digital Goods usage rules describe broader Retained Rights Video buy rules that allow downloads on up to 10 compatible registered devices, while noting special restrictions for some AMC Networks and StudioCanal content.
Because these Microsoft documents describe different limits in different contexts, there is no safe single number for every title and account. The applicable limit can vary by product, content rights, device type, and the rule governing that content. If the app refuses a download because you have reached a device limit, manage devices through the Microsoft account or service controls rather than copying files between machines.
Microsoft also says a device can be removed from the download-device list only once every 30 days. Removing a device removes its downloaded items. The titles may be downloadable again after the device is added again, but the process can require waiting for the device-removal period.
Offline playback is not necessarily independent of Microsoft forever. Microsoft’s rules state that license files must be maintained and that a compatible device may need to access the service at least once every 90 days to refresh its license. Keep the app installed, retain access to the purchasing account, and connect the computer periodically if you expect downloaded titles to remain playable.
Playback on Windows 10 N editions
Windows 10 N editions omit certain media technologies found in standard Windows editions. Microsoft identifies Movies & TV as part of the media functionality supplied through the Media Feature Pack on Windows 10 and Windows 11 N.
If Movies & TV will not play a title on Windows 10 N:
- Open Settings > Apps > Optional features.
- Check whether the Media Feature Pack is installed or available for your specific Windows build.
- Install it if required, then restart Windows.
- Confirm that the Movies & TV app is installed and updated through Microsoft Store where applicable.
The exact installation path can vary by Windows build. Follow the instructions for the edition and version installed on the computer.

Why VLC or Windows Media Player may not help
Microsoft Store video purchases are intended to be played through the Microsoft Movies & TV app. Generic players such as VLC or Windows Media Player may not recognize, locate, or authenticate app-managed purchased content.
This is different from playing a normal local video file. If you have a separate DRM-free MP4, MKV, or other supported file, a generic player may be appropriate. That does not mean the protected data used by Movies & TV can be copied out and opened in the same way.
Troubleshooting checklist
The purchased title is missing
- Sign out and back in using the Microsoft account that made the purchase.
- Check whether the title was purchased rather than rented or obtained from another provider.
- Confirm that you are looking in the purchased library, not only a general search result.
- Check whether the title is available in your region and on your Windows device.
The download control is unavailable
The title may not support downloads, or its rights may be limited by region, device, rental status, or content-specific rules. An unavailable download control is not fixed by changing the folder or attaching a larger drive.
The download is not visible in File Explorer
This is normal for app-managed content. Movies & TV downloads may be stored in protected or cache-like locations and may not have recognizable names. Use the app’s library and playback controls rather than searching for an MP4.

Windows 10 N cannot play the movie
Install the Media Feature Pack appropriate for the Windows N edition and confirm that Movies & TV and the required media components are present. Restart Windows after installing the feature.
You need to buy a new movie
Microsoft has stopped selling new movies and television programs through its own Microsoft Store channels. Microsoft identifies Amazon Prime Video, Apple TV, and Fandango at Home among alternative transactional entertainment services available on Windows and Xbox. These are alternatives for future purchases, not destinations to which existing Microsoft Movies & TV purchases can be transferred.

For a computer that lacks room for eligible offline downloads, an external hard drive is generally the most capacity-focused option. An external SSD is another option if you also want faster general file transfers or a more compact drive, but the available research does not establish a Movies & TV-specific playback advantage for an SSD.

Whichever device you choose, remember the boundary: the drive can help Windows provide space for app-managed content when configured before the download, but it is not a DRM bypass, a second registered computer, or a portable archive of Microsoft purchases. Keep the drive connected and available to the same supported setup, and do not copy the protected download elsewhere.
Frequently Asked Questions
Can I download a movie I bought years ago from Microsoft?
Often, yes. Sign in to Movies & TV with the Microsoft account used for the purchase and open the purchased library. The title must still be eligible in your region and on your device, and it must support offline downloading.
Are Movies & TV downloads permanent MP4 files?
No. They are licensed, app-managed downloads for offline playback. Microsoft’s rules do not support copying or moving Retained Rights Video from its original location.
Can I put a Microsoft Movies & TV purchase on a USB stick?
Not as a supported portable copy. A USB drive, SD card, external hard drive, or external SSD may store ordinary DRM-free videos, but it should not be used to export Microsoft-licensed Movies & TV content.
The Tool Desk
Outbyte PC Repair FREEClear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →Outbyte Driver Updater FREEScan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →How often must Windows connect to Microsoft for downloaded movies?
Microsoft’s digital-goods rules state that a compatible device may need to access the service at least once every 90 days to refresh license files. Offline playback should therefore not be treated as permanently independent of Microsoft’s service.
How many devices can download my purchased movies?
The applicable limit varies. Microsoft’s Windows-app device guidance refers to up to five devices, while separate Digital Goods rules describe up to 10 compatible registered devices for broader Retained Rights Video buy rules, with content-specific exceptions. Check the limit that applies to your title and account.
The Bottom Line
The supported method is straightforward: sign in to Movies & TV, open an eligible previously purchased title, download it through the app, and leave it in the app-managed storage location. Choose a larger connected drive before downloading if Windows provides that option, but do not move, copy, decrypt, or convert the download into a supposedly permanent movie file. Microsoft purchases remain tied to licensing, compatible devices, the app, and periodic service access.
