Although the premise connects directly to Outlander, the show is not simply a retelling of scenes already shown in the parent series. It develops the histories of Jamie’s and Claire’s parents into a separate television narrative.

Who are Brian Fraser and Ellen MacKenzie?
Brian Fraser is Jamie Fraser’s father, and Ellen MacKenzie is Jamie’s mother. In the prequel, they are young people whose relationship develops within the pressures of Highland society.
Ellen’s choices are influenced by her family, clan obligations, marriage prospects, and the expectations surrounding her position. How does the prequel connect to Outlander?
The connection is genealogical and thematic. Brian and Ellen become Jamie Fraser’s parents; Henry and Julia become Claire Beauchamp’s parents. Their relationships explain part of the family history behind the two central figures of Outlander.
The prequel also carries forward familiar franchise concerns: love under pressure, separation across dangerous historical events, the conflict between personal choice and family duty, and the way political upheaval affects private lives.

Is Blood of My Blood based on a Diana Gabaldon book?
No—not in the ordinary sense of a television series adapting a finished novel. At the time of the series’ launch, coverage noted that there were no completed novels for Matthew B. Roberts to adapt for this prequel. Gabaldon is involved with the television production as a consulting producer and writer, but that does not make the show an adaptation of an already published Blood of My Blood novel.
Gabaldon’s broader discussions of future Outlander prequel-book material are a separate publishing matter. Readers should not assume that a future book plan and the television series have identical plots, release schedules, or continuity.
What should you read alongside the show?
The best companion reading is the Outlander book series by Diana Gabaldon. The novels provide the larger universe, the family context, and the background that makes the prequel’s connections easier to recognize.

Bear McCreary composed the season-one original soundtrack. A digital release became available through Amazon Music on August 8, 2025 and contains 15 tracks, including The Ellen and Brian Theme and The Julia and Henry Theme.
The Blood of My Blood soundtrack is a digital music release, not a verified CD, vinyl record, or other physical product. Anyone looking for physical media should confirm that a separately listed release is genuine and current before purchasing.

Starz currently lists Friday, September 18, 2026 as the season-two premiere date. The date is also confirmed in an official Starz teaser and on the network’s support information.
The confirmed information is narrower than some online listings may suggest. The available official materials do not yet establish a complete episode list, episode count, finale date, full season-two cast announcement, or detailed authoritative synopsis. Do you need to watch Outlander first?
