For legitimate offline viewing, use the official Netflix app on a compatible Android phone or tablet, iPhone or iPad, Amazon Fire tablet, or a Chromebook with Google Play Store support. A compatible Chromebook is the closest laptop-style solution.
Can you download Netflix movies directly to a laptop?
It depends on what you mean by “laptop.” Netflix distinguishes between computers used for streaming and devices that support app-based downloads.

Netflix’s computer-support documentation covers browser-based viewing on Windows, Mac, and Chromebook computers, while its download documentation lists supported mobile devices, Fire tablets, and Google Play Store-enabled Chromebooks. Windows laptop: streaming works, downloads do not
On a Windows 10 or Windows 11 laptop, you can watch Netflix through Microsoft Edge, Google Chrome, Mozilla Firefox, or Opera. Windows 10 and later computers can also install the Netflix app from the Microsoft Store.

However, Netflix says that downloads are no longer available on devices using Windows. The current Windows app includes features such as live events, improved streaming quality, and support for ad-supported plans, but it does not restore the old offline-download function. Installing or reinstalling the Windows app will not provide a supported way to save Netflix movies to the laptop.
So the accurate answer for a Windows laptop is: you can watch Netflix on it, but you cannot currently download Netflix movies to it for offline playback. Netflix documents this change in its Windows app help page.
MacBook: watch Netflix in a browser, but do not expect downloads
MacBook users can stream Netflix through Safari, Chrome, Edge, Firefox, or Opera, provided the Mac and browser meet Netflix’s requirements. Netflix’s current computer documentation does not list Mac computers as devices that support offline downloads.

That means there is no official Netflix download workflow for macOS comparable to downloading a title in the Netflix mobile app. If you need to watch during a flight, commute, or trip without reliable internet, download the title to a supported iPhone, iPad, Android device, Fire tablet, or compatible Chromebook instead.
The laptop-style exception: a Chromebook with Google Play Store
A Chromebook can support Netflix downloads, but only when it can install Android apps through the Google Play Store. In that situation, you download and use the official Netflix Android app rather than downloading a movie through the Chrome browser.

Do not assume that every Chromebook qualifies. Check the specific model’s specifications and settings for Google Play Store support. ChromeOS version requirements for browser streaming describe whether Netflix can play in a browser; they do not by themselves guarantee that the device supports Netflix app downloads. Netflix identifies Google Play Store availability as the important qualification for Chromebook downloads.
If offline Netflix is the main reason you want a laptop-shaped device, compare models carefully and look specifically for a Chromebook laptop with Google Play Store. Confirm Play Store access, available storage, ChromeOS support, and Netflix compatibility before purchasing. Netflix’s supported-device documentation explains the Chromebook app requirement.
How to download a Netflix movie for offline viewing
Use this procedure on a supported Android phone or tablet, iPhone or iPad, Amazon Fire tablet, or Google Play Store-enabled Chromebook.
- Install the official Netflix app. Use Google Play Store for Android or a compatible Chromebook, the Apple App Store for iPhone and iPad, or Amazon Appstore for a supported Fire tablet. Avoid downloading Netflix installation files from unofficial websites.
- Sign in to Netflix. Use the account and profile that will be used for offline viewing. Profile settings can affect which titles are visible.
- Find the movie or episode. Open its details page in the Netflix app.
- Look for the Download icon. If the icon appears, tap or click it and wait for the download to finish. Some shows display a download option beside individual episodes rather than beside the entire series.
- Open Downloads. Go to the app’s Downloads section to find and play saved titles without an internet connection.
- Test the download before traveling. Disconnect from Wi-Fi or use the device’s offline mode and start the movie. Testing in advance gives you time to fix storage, account, or licensing problems.
Downloaded titles remain inside the Netflix app. They are not ordinary MP4 files that you can copy to a USB drive, open in another media player, or transfer to a Windows laptop. Clearing Netflix app data, resetting the device, or uninstalling the app deletes downloads saved on that device. Netflix’s download troubleshooting page covers these limitations.
Why a Netflix movie may not have a Download button
If the Download icon is missing, the problem may not be your device. Netflix explains that download availability is controlled by title-specific licensing arrangements. A movie may stream on Netflix without being licensed for offline downloading.
Possible reasons include:
- Download rights are exclusive to another company.
- The content provider has not made download rights available for purchase.
- Popularity, cost, seasonality, or local licensing conditions affect availability.
- A Netflix-branded production was made with a studio that retained certain franchise or intellectual-property rights.
- The title is not available for download in your current country.
Some movies and shows can also be downloaded only a limited number of times per account within a defined period. If you reach a title-specific limit, Netflix may require you to stream the title or wait until the relevant period passes. The missing button is therefore not proof that the app or laptop is malfunctioning.

Supported alternatives to a Windows laptop or MacBook
Android phone or tablet
Android devices are one of the most straightforward alternatives. Netflix says the latest app generally requires Android 9 or later, although older app versions may support some earlier Android versions. Rooted phones and tablets, or devices running modified operating systems, may be unable to install or use Netflix correctly.
A larger Android tablet for Netflix downloads is usually more comfortable than a phone for watching a feature-length documentary or movie. Check the Android version, Google Play certification, internal storage, and the specific device’s ability to install Netflix before buying.
iPhone or iPad
Netflix supports downloads on iPhone and iPad through the official app. Netflix’s compatibility information says downloads are available on iOS or iPadOS 12 and later, while the latest Netflix app requires iOS or iPadOS 18 or later. Downloading on an ad-supported experience requires iOS or iPadOS 16 or later.
For people already using Apple devices, an iPad for offline Netflix provides a larger screen without the uncertainty of trying to make a MacBook download titles.
Amazon Fire tablet
Amazon Fire tablets are another supported option, provided the tablet runs Fire OS 7 or later. Netflix downloads are handled in the official app, and the movie remains available through the app rather than as a freely transferable video file.
A budget-conscious reader can consider an Amazon Fire tablet for offline movies, but should verify the Fire OS version, storage capacity, and Netflix app availability for the exact model.
Plan, storage, and download limits
Ad-supported plan limits
Netflix currently says its ad-supported experience limits users to 15 total downloads per device per calendar month. The limit resets on the first day of the next month. Netflix’s documentation describes the referenced plan as allowing those downloads across two devices, but the number of download-capable devices and other restrictions can vary by plan.

Check the current details for your subscription in your Netflix account rather than assuming that the same download allowance applies to every plan or country.

Smart Downloads
Smart Downloads can automatically download the next episode of a series or select recommended titles, reducing the need to manage each episode manually. Netflix says Smart Downloads are unavailable on an ad-supported plan.
Storage
Netflix downloads consume storage on the device where they were saved. Before downloading, remove unused apps, photos, or old Netflix titles if space is limited. Do not clear Netflix’s app data as a storage shortcut unless you are willing to delete all saved downloads.
Troubleshooting: the Download icon is missing
Work through these checks on a phone, tablet, Fire tablet, or compatible Chromebook:
- Update Netflix. Install the latest available version of the app from the device’s official app store.
- Update the operating system. Check the device’s system-update settings and confirm that it meets Netflix’s current requirements.
- Try another title. If only one movie lacks the icon, licensing is a likely explanation. Netflix’s title-download guidance lists common rights restrictions.
- Check the profile. Maturity restrictions can prevent titles from appearing or being available in Downloads. Try the appropriate permitted profile.
- Check storage. Free enough space for the download and try again.
- Check the device type and OS. Fire tablets need Fire OS 7 or later; Android devices need a compatible, unmodified operating system; Chromebooks need Google Play Store support.
- Do not clear app data or uninstall Netflix. Those actions delete existing downloads.
What not to use
Browser extensions, screen-recording software, DRM-removal utilities, unofficial Netflix downloaders, and attempts to copy protected files from Netflix’s app data are not supported Netflix download methods. They can create security, reliability, account, terms-of-use, or copyright problems, and they do not turn a Windows laptop or MacBook into an authorized Netflix download device.

The supported solution is device-specific: stream on Windows or Mac, or use the official Netflix app on a compatible mobile device, Fire tablet, or Play Store-enabled Chromebook.

Streaming and download rights are separate. Netflix may lack download rights because of licensing arrangements, regional restrictions, cost, exclusivity, or title-specific limits.
Can I move a Netflix download from my phone to my laptop?
