Spoilers for Venom: The Last Dance follow. The film has two credits scenes. The mid-credits scene reveals that Knull is still imprisoned and remains a threat. The final post-credits scene shows that symbiote material may have survived the destruction of Area 51—but it does not confirm that Eddie Brock’s Venom is alive or that the cockroach becomes Venom.
What happens at the end of Venom: The Last Dance?
The film’s main ending treats Venom’s sacrifice as real. Eddie Brock and Venom are being hunted because their bond created the Codex, a unique symbiotic marker that can help Knull escape his prison. When the Xenophages attack, Venom chooses to separate from Eddie and destroy the Codex rather than allow Knull to obtain it.

Venom absorbs the attacking Xenophages and then enters the acid bath at the military facility identified as Area 51. Eddie is thrown clear and survives, but Venom appears to be destroyed. The sacrifice saves Eddie and prevents Knull from using the Codex, but it also ends the relationship at the heart of the trilogy.
That emotional ending is important when interpreting the credits scenes. Neither scene straightforwardly cancels Venom’s sacrifice. Instead, the film closes Eddie and Venom’s central story while leaving possible material for a larger symbiote and Knull storyline.

- Tom Hardy stars as the lethal protector and anti-hero Venom - one of Marvel's most enigmatic and complex characters.
How many credits scenes are there?
Venom: The Last Dance contains two scenes:
- Mid-credits scene: Knull remains imprisoned and warns that the force opposing him is gone.
- Post-credits scene: the Mexican bartender survives the Area 51 destruction, while a broken vial and a cockroach suggest that symbiote material may still exist.
If you want to rewatch both scenes, look for the Venom: The Last Dance Blu-ray. Sony lists the film’s home-video release and purchase options through its official movie materials.
Mid-credits scene: Knull is still imprisoned
The first scene cuts back to Knull, the symbiote god also known in Marvel Comics as the King in Black. He is still confined in his throne room or planetary prison. The attempted retrieval of the Codex has failed, so Knull has not escaped at the end of the film.
However, Knull is not defeated. He reacts to the loss of Venom as the removal of the protector—or opposing force—that could have stood in his way. The scene gives viewers a closer look at Knull and emphasizes that the character remains active, aware, and dangerous despite still being imprisoned.
The most accurate interpretation is therefore “Knull remains a threat”, not “Knull has escaped.” The film establishes the danger of his possible release, but it does not show him breaking free.
Who is Knull?
In Marvel Comics, Knull is an ancient being associated with darkness, the abyss, and the creation of the symbiotes. He is called the God of the Symbiotes and the King in Black. Marvel’s comic mythology connects him to the symbiotes’ origins and to a war against the light and the Celestials.
The movie uses those broad ideas but does not establish that it is adapting the entire King in Black comic event. Viewers interested in the source material can explore a King in Black comic or a Knull/Venom collected edition, but the film should not be treated as a scene-for-scene translation of that storyline.

- Tom Hardy returns to the big screen as the lethal protector Venom, one of MARVEL?S greatest and most complex characters. In search of his next big story, journalist Eddie Brock lands an exclusive interview with convicted murderer and death row inmate Cletus Kasady (Woody Harrelson), who discovers Eddie?s secret and becomes the host for Carnage, a menacing and terrifying symbiote.
Does the mid-credits scene confirm a fourth Venom movie?
No. The scene clearly leaves Knull available for a future story, but it does not confirm a fourth Venom film, Eddie Brock’s return, Tom Hardy’s future involvement, or a specific crossover with another Marvel character.
Director and writer Kelly Marcel has described the three films as a planned story arc and has indicated that the ending was deliberate. She has also characterized Knull’s appearance as an introduction or preview of a character too significant to use once and discard. That supports the idea that Sony wanted to preserve future possibilities, but it is not the same as announcing a sequel.
The distinction matters: Venom: The Last Dance can complete Eddie and Venom’s emotional trilogy while still leaving Knull as a possible franchise threat.
Post-credits scene: what happens to the bartender?
The final scene returns to the Mexican bartender played by Cristo Fernández. Earlier in the movie, Eddie and Venom stop at his bar while trying to avoid the authorities. Venom’s chaotic cocktail-making leaves a small amount of symbiote material behind.
Rex Strickland later collects that material in a vial while taking the bartender into custody. After the Area 51 explosion, the bartender emerges from the wreckage alive and confused. The camera then focuses on a broken vial and a cockroach nearby.
That final image is deliberately suggestive. It raises the possibility that a small amount of symbiote material survived independently of the main Venom-Eddie bond and might find a host. But the movie cuts away before showing a bonding, identifying the symbiote, or confirming what happens next.

Is Venom alive because of the cockroach?
Not definitively. The post-credits scene leaves open a survival route, but it does not prove that Eddie’s original Venom survived.
The evidence supports several cautious conclusions:
- A vial containing symbiote-related material was present at the facility.
- The vial appears to break during the destruction.
- A cockroach is shown near the spilled material.
- The film does not show the material bonding with the cockroach.
- The film does not identify the substance as the fully developed Venom who sacrificed himself.
- The film does not show the residue returning to Eddie.
So the scene may be setting up a surviving symbiote fragment, a new host, or another symbiote-related development. It is too early to call that character Venom with certainty.
Could the cockroach be a comic-book reference?
Possibly. Some comic-book comparisons point to Mania, a Venom-related character with a history involving cockroaches. That connection may be an Easter egg or a hint at a possible adaptation, but it is not confirmed as the explanation for the movie’s final shot.

Is the material in the vial definitely Venom?
No. The movie does not label the substance in the final shot. It could be connected to the material Venom left behind at the bar, but discussion around the film has also considered whether it might relate to symbiote material used by Dr. Teddy Payne or another derivative.

Because the scene provides no explicit identification, claims that the vial definitely contains the original Venom—or that the cockroach definitely becomes Venom—go beyond what the film shows.
How the two credits scenes fit together
| Scene | What it confirms | What it does not confirm |
|---|---|---|
| Mid-credits | Knull remains imprisoned and aware of Venom’s apparent loss. | It does not show Knull escaping or confirm a specific sequel. |
| Post-credits | Symbiote-related material may have survived near the destroyed facility. | It does not prove that Eddie’s Venom survived, that the cockroach bonded with it, or that a named character has returned. |
Together, the scenes preserve two different possibilities. The first expands the cosmic threat by keeping Knull in play. The second preserves a potential Earth-based symbiote storyline. Neither one erases the film’s immediate emotional conclusion: Eddie survives, while Venom appears to sacrifice himself to destroy the Codex and protect the world.

Eddie’s survival is not presented as a simple victory. He loses Venom, his partner and the symbiote personality with whom he has shared the trilogy’s defining relationship. The final separation gives the sacrifice emotional weight: Venom does not merely escape danger; he chooses to give up his life so Eddie can live and Knull cannot be freed.
The credits scenes may leave the door open for future symbiote stories, but they do not immediately restore Eddie’s relationship with Venom. At the end of the film, Eddie is alive and Venom is not shown returning to him.

Knull’s plan fails in this film because he does not obtain the Codex. His prison remains intact, and the Xenophages are destroyed. But the mid-credits scene makes clear that this is a setback rather than a final defeat.
That creates a potential future conflict without requiring the movie to resolve it immediately. Knull can remain imprisoned, continue searching for a way out, and become the center of a later story. The film’s credits scenes therefore function less as a promise of a particular sequel than as franchise signposts.

Final answer: are the credits scenes a happy ending?
They are deliberately ambiguous. The main ending is tragic but apparently definitive for Eddie and Venom’s three-film arc. The mid-credits scene says Knull is still waiting, while the post-credits scene hints that symbiote material may have survived.
In short:
- Venom appears to die in the Area 51 acid bath.
- Eddie Brock survives but is separated from Venom.
- Knull remains imprisoned but is not defeated.
- The vial and cockroach suggest a possible symbiote survivor, without proving that it is Eddie’s Venom.
- No specific sequel or crossover is confirmed by either credits scene.
Frequently Asked Questions
Does Venom come back after the credits?
The film does not confirm that Eddie’s original Venom comes back. The broken vial and cockroach suggest that symbiote material may have survived, but there is no shown bonding, transformation, or reunion with Eddie.
Does Knull escape in Venom: The Last Dance?
No. Knull is still imprisoned in the mid-credits scene. He remains a threat, but the scene does not show him escaping.
How many post-credits scenes does Venom: The Last Dance have?
There are two credits scenes: one during the middle of the credits and one after the credits have finished.
Is Venom: The Last Dance setting up a sequel?
It leaves future stories possible, particularly one involving Knull or surviving symbiote material, but it does not officially confirm a fourth Venom movie, a cast return, or a release date.
The Bottom Line
The mid-credits scene keeps Knull imprisoned but active, while the post-credits scene hints that symbiote material survived near Area 51. Venom’s sacrifice is still treated as real: the movie does not confirm that Eddie’s Venom survived or that the nearby cockroach became a new host.
