The NYT Connections puzzle requested here is not available for verification yet. The research check was made on August 11, 2026, before the August 17 puzzle was released, so its 16 words, hints, categories, puzzle number, and answers cannot be reported accurately yet.
Date correction: August 17, 2026 falls on a Monday, not a Sunday. If the intended puzzle date is Sunday, the likely date is August 16, but that should be confirmed before publication rather than silently substituted.
Spoiler warning: This article is intended to be updated with the complete hints and solution after the correctly dated puzzle is live. No answer has been invented or inferred in advance.
When the August 17 NYT Connections puzzle will be available
NYT releases its daily Connections game at midnight in the player’s local timezone. Because of timezone differences, the New York Times Connections Companion may have two companions live on the same calendar day; those companion pages are dated according to Eastern Standard Time. That can create apparent differences between a player’s local date and the date shown in coverage.

The official NYT Games help information says that Connections can be played through the Games app, the Connections website, the News app, and The Athletic. It currently describes the game as free to play on supported platforms. Connections Bot analysis is a separate feature limited to certain subscriber categories; a subscription should not be presented as necessary for ordinary play.
Why the answers are not listed yet
Connections is deliberately constructed around misleading overlaps. The game presents 16 words, which must be divided into four groups of four. Each group has an intended relationship and is color-coded by difficulty:
- Yellow: generally the easiest group
- Green: generally the next level of difficulty
- Blue: generally more difficult
- Purple: generally the most difficult
A word may appear to fit more than one category, but the objective is to find the intended four groups. Without the live grid, any purported August 17 answers would be speculation. A future puzzle cannot be reliably reconstructed from earlier daily games.

August 17 hints and answers: publication update
After the live puzzle is available, this page should be updated with the following verified information:
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
- The exact date label shown by NYT and, if available, the official or reliably reported puzzle number.
- The complete 16-word grid.
- Four spoiler-controlled hints, starting with broad category descriptions and becoming more specific.
- The four official category labels and their four members each.
- A short explanation of misleading words and why the intended grouping is stronger than plausible alternatives.
- A difficulty or mistake assessment only if it is supported by the live game or an identified official tool—not by an assumed solving experience.
- The time and timezone used to verify the update.
What recent puzzle coverage confirms—and what it does not
Recent dated coverage confirms that the daily sequence was continuing immediately before the requested date. Tom’s Guide identified August 9, 2026 as game 1,155, while TechRadar identified August 10, 2026 as game 1,156. Those reports establish recent continuity, but they do not verify the August 17 grid, answer groups, or eventual puzzle number. They also do not resolve whether the assignment intended August 16 or August 17.
How to play NYT Connections while waiting
You can play NYT Connections through the supported NYT Games channels listed by the Help Center. Start by scanning all 16 words for obvious groupings, but do not submit the first plausible set if one word could belong elsewhere. Since a wrong guess uses one of the game’s limited mistakes, compare candidate groups and look for a cleaner four-word relationship before committing.

For readers with access to it, Connections Bot can provide post-game analysis, but it is not the same thing as access to the basic daily puzzle. The official Help Center should be consulted for the current availability of that subscriber feature.
Important date note for readers
If you are looking for the Sunday puzzle, check whether you mean Sunday, August 16, 2026. If you mean the puzzle labeled August 17 by the relevant NYT edition or companion page, it is associated with Monday, August 17, 2026. The distinction matters because NYT’s midnight release and Eastern Time date labels can cause answer articles to appear under different calendar dates.
