Julie Chrisley became emotional in federal court in Atlanta on September 25, 2024, when a judge again sentenced her to 84 months—seven years—in prison. The hearing followed a narrow ruling by the U.S. Court of Appeals for the Eleventh Circuit. The appeals court had vacated her original sentence because of a problem with how losses were attributed to her, but it did not overturn her convictions.
That 2024 sentence is no longer the latest development. President Donald Trump granted Chrisley a presidential pardon on May 28, 2025, and reports said she was released from prison. The pardon was executive clemency, not a judicial finding that she was innocent.
What happened at Julie Chrisley’s resentencing?
Julie Chrisley appeared before the U.S. District Court for the Northern District of Georgia in Atlanta on September 25, 2024. She apologized tearfully to the court and to her children, according to contemporaneous courtroom reports. Her children Savannah Chrisley and Chase Chrisley were reported to be present.
The judge did not reduce her prison term. After the resentencing, the court imposed the same 84-month sentence, or seven years, that Chrisley had originally received.

Reports also noted that Chrisley appeared with darker or brown hair than viewers associated with her television image. That detail featured in entertainment coverage of the hearing, but it had no legal significance.
Why was Julie Chrisley back in court?
Chrisley was not being retried. Her return to court resulted from a limited sentencing remand issued by the Eleventh Circuit on June 21, 2024.
A federal jury had convicted Julie and Todd Chrisley in 2022 in a case involving bank fraud, wire fraud, tax-related offenses, conspiracy, and obstruction-related conduct. Prosecutors alleged that the couple used false financial information and fraudulent loan applications to obtain more than $30 million in loans, while also concealing income from the Internal Revenue Service.
On appeal, the Eleventh Circuit affirmed the convictions and rejected the defendants’ other major appellate challenges. But the panel vacated Julie Chrisley’s sentence because the district court had not identified evidence supporting the attribution to her of losses incurred before 2007.

In practical terms, the appellate ruling required a corrected sentencing analysis; it did not require the judge to impose a shorter prison term.
Why did the court impose the same seven-year term?
The original sentence had technically been vacated, so the most precise description is that Chrisley was resentenced to 84 months or that the court imposed the same 84-month term after remand. “Her sentence was upheld” is understandable headline shorthand, but it can obscure what happened procedurally: the original sentence was set aside on a narrow calculation issue and then replaced with the same term after resentencing.

After reconsidering the matter, the district court concluded that an 84-month sentence remained appropriate. The appellate decision did not dictate a specific lower sentence, and the district court retained discretion to determine the appropriate punishment after addressing the loss-attribution issue.
Available contemporary reports described the outcome as the judge declining the defense request for a reduction. Unless the filed resentencing judgment or hearing transcript is consulted, it is safer not to attribute a more detailed explanation to the judge than the public reporting supports.
What did Julie Chrisley say in court?
The emotional center of the hearing was Chrisley’s apology. Reports said she apologized to the court and to her children for her conduct and for the consequences the case had brought to her family.
Those courtroom details should be understood as reported events, not as evidence of a change in the legal status of the case. Her apology did not reverse the convictions, and the resentencing hearing was focused on punishment rather than guilt.
What were Julie and Todd Chrisley convicted of?
The Justice Department’s clemency record lists Julie Chrisley’s offenses as:
- Conspiracy to commit bank fraud
- Five counts of bank fraud
- Wire fraud
- Conspiracy to defraud the United States by obstructing and impeding the Internal Revenue Laws
- Tax evasion
- Obstruction of justice
The same Justice Department record identifies an 84-month prison sentence, three years of supervised release, and $4,740,645.04 in restitution. It records the judgment as amended on September 25, 2024.

The existence of the later pardon does not, by itself, establish that every financial consequence disappeared. The official clemency record continues to identify the restitution amount in its description of the case.
How did the family’s television career shape the coverage?
Julie and Todd Chrisley became nationally known through Chrisley Knows Best, the USA Network reality series about their family life, wealth, and domestic conflicts. The network’s official program description identifies Todd, Julie, and their children as the central family and lists the series as having 10 seasons.
That television history explains the intense entertainment-media interest in the hearing, including attention to Chrisley’s appearance and the presence of her children. It does not change the underlying legal issues. The key legal event was the Eleventh Circuit’s narrow sentencing ruling and the district court’s subsequent decision to impose the same term.

The 2024 court ruling was later followed by a major clemency development. The Justice Department’s Office of the Pardon Attorney records that President Donald Trump granted Julie Chrisley a presidential pardon on May 28, 2025. A pardon warrant hosted by the Justice Department identifies Chrisley as the recipient of that pardon.

Before the pardon, Julie’s projected Bureau of Prisons release date had reportedly been January 2028. That projected date is now historical and should not be presented as her current release information.
A presidential pardon is an act of executive clemency. It is not the same as an appellate reversal, a new trial, or a judicial declaration that the convictions were wrongful. The Eleventh Circuit affirmed Julie Chrisley’s convictions in 2024; the later pardon changed her custody status but should not be described as a court-ordered exoneration.
