Thunderbolts* First Reviews: A Welcome Breath of Fresh Air for the MCU—But Not a Full Reset

Thunderbolts* feels like a welcome MCU course correction thanks to Florence Pugh, a damaged antihero ensemble, and a more human emotional focus—but its pacing, visuals, and franchise obligations keep it from being a complete reset.

Thunderbolts* is broadly as refreshing as its first reviews suggested. Marvel’s antihero team-up is more intimate, character-driven, and emotionally legible than its premise initially implies. Instead of assembling another group of polished icons, the film puts damaged, compromised people at the center: characters dealing with guilt, loneliness, depression, resentment, grief, and the fear that they are disposable.

That makes Thunderbolts* feel like a credible course correction for the MCU. It is not a flawless reinvention, and it has familiar superhero architecture, uneven pacing, muted visuals, and unavoidable franchise obligations. But the first wave of reviews was right about the central achievement: this is a Marvel film that earns much of its momentum from people rather than mythology.

The first reviews were positive—but qualified

The early critical response treated Thunderbolts* as one of Marvel Studios’ more successful recent efforts. Rotten Tomatoes’ first-review roundup collected reactions describing the film as a pleasant surprise, a return to basics, and one of the stronger entries in the MCU’s Multiverse Saga.

The important qualification is that “breath of fresh air” does not mean “Marvel is completely back.” The film’s reception was substantially better than the reaction to several recent MCU releases, but critics still identified structural and visual shortcomings. Its commercial opening was solid rather than spectacular, and later analysis questioned whether positive reviews were enough to restore Marvel’s automatic event status.

The most defensible verdict is therefore narrower and more useful: Thunderbolts* is a welcome character-first improvement and a promising adjustment in emphasis, not proof that every larger MCU problem has been solved.

What is Thunderbolts* about?

Directed by Jake Schreier and written by Eric Pearson and Joanna Calo, the film brings together a group of morally compromised or psychologically damaged figures who do not resemble a traditional Avengers team. The central lineup includes Yelena Belova, Bucky Barnes, Red Guardian, John Walker—also known as U.S. Agent—Ghost, and Taskmaster. Julia Louis-Dreyfus plays Valentina Allegra de Fontaine, while Lewis Pullman plays Bob, a character connected to the Sentry and the Void.

Marvel’s official promotional material presents the group as an unconventional collection of antiheroes forced into a dangerous mission. Valentina’s covert operations and attempt to eliminate loose ends provide the plot’s immediate engine, but the film’s real subject is what happens when people who feel discarded are forced to depend on one another.

That distinction explains much of the critical response. Thunderbolts* is still a large-scale superhero movie, complete with supernatural stakes and MCU continuity. Its relative freshness comes from making those stakes emotionally understandable. The characters are not simply trying to save the world; they are trying to determine whether their lives have value beyond violence, orders, and past mistakes.

Florence Pugh gives the film its emotional center

The most consistent praise went to Florence Pugh as Yelena Belova. The Rotten Tomatoes critic excerpts repeatedly identify Pugh as a major reason the film works, while the Associated Press described the movie as an IMAX-scale platform for her growing movie-star presence.

Pugh’s performance is important because Yelena is not merely the funniest member of the team or the most recognizable returning character. She is the audience’s emotional access point. Yelena has the experience to understand exactly how dangerous the people around her can be, but she is also exhausted by the idea that another mission can provide a reason to keep moving forward.

The character’s grief and alienation give the film a more vulnerable register than a conventional super-team adventure. As The Daily Beast’s review observed, Yelena is struggling with guilt, isolation, and the difficulty of imagining a future. Pugh plays those feelings without turning Yelena into a solemn lecture about mental health. The humor, irritation, bravado, and sudden emotional openness all remain visible at once.

Her relationship with Bob/Sentry also allows the movie to connect its external conflict to its internal concerns. Bob’s instability is not just a plot complication; it reflects the film’s interest in people who fear that their darkest parts make them unworthy of connection. Yelena’s concern for him gives the superhero mechanics a human reason to exist.

The ensemble works because it is dysfunctional

Thunderbolts* does not ask the audience to believe that this group would naturally become friends. That is one of its strengths. The characters arrive with incompatible temperaments, competing loyalties, and different kinds of emotional damage.

  • Yelena brings grief, professional competence, and a profound sense of disconnection.
  • Bucky supplies weary moral seriousness and the burden of having spent much of his life controlled by other people.
  • Red Guardian masks his need for belonging with overeager performance and comic bravado.
  • John Walker is defensive, resentful, and insecure about his status as an also-ran in a world of super-soldiers and legends.
  • Ghost remains guarded and detached, shaped by exploitation and survival.
  • Bob introduces the most unstable and potentially dangerous question: can someone carrying extraordinary power also be trusted with his own despair?

The resulting chemistry is less polished than the banter of a conventional Marvel team. These people interrupt each other, distrust each other, and frequently fail to communicate. Their eventual cooperation feels more convincing because it grows out of mutual recognition rather than instant camaraderie.

Several first reviews emphasized that the group’s combined effect is greater than the individual parts. That does not mean every character receives equal development. The Daily Beast regarded Ghost as closer to a gimmick than a fully realized figure and argued that John Walker never completely escapes his second-string position. The ensemble is therefore both the film’s greatest asset and one of its limitations: there are enough characters to create friction, but not always enough room to explore every arc in depth.

Why the film feels more grounded

Calling Thunderbolts* “grounded” requires some precision. This is not a realistic drama, and it does not abandon the fantastical scale of the MCU. There is a supernatural threat, major action spectacle, and a mythology that connects the film to future Marvel stories.

What feels grounded is the emotional framing. The movie is less interested in whether its heroes are worthy symbols and more interested in whether they can live with themselves. Guilt, depression, loneliness, purposelessness, and redemption are not background details; they shape the characters’ decisions and determine how they respond to the mission.

That emotional focus gives the film a different texture from stories built primarily around cosmic escalation. The characters’ problems are legible even when the plot becomes enormous. A viewer does not need to understand every branch of the Multiverse Saga to recognize the fear of being abandoned, the shame of having caused harm, or the suspicion that one’s only value lies in being useful to someone else.

The film’s found-family dynamic follows naturally from those themes. This is not a group of perfect people discovering that they are secretly exceptional. It is a group of damaged people discovering that they may still be capable of responsibility, loyalty, and care.

One reason reviewers responded to Bob/Sentry/Void is that the threat carries metaphorical weight. The Void is not only an obstacle for the team to defeat; it gives physical form to emotional darkness and destructive despair. The heroes are forced to confront the possibility that the person they are trying to save may also be the source of the danger.

The idea is not entirely new, and the film does not transform superhero psychology into radically sophisticated drama. It still has to deliver a genre climax, visual effects, and familiar action beats. But the metaphor gives the third act a stronger thematic purpose than a generic villain would have provided. The conflict is about more than overpowering an enemy. It asks whether suffering can be met with compassion without ignoring the risk it creates.

Valentina also benefits from this structure. Several early reactions suggested that her presence works more effectively here as a villainous force because her manipulation of damaged people is connected to the film’s broader concern with disposability and control.

Where the first reviews had reservations

The pacing is uneven

The clearest recurring criticism was that the first two acts could be tighter. The film’s character work is generally appreciated, but not every transition between personal conflict, exposition, and mission mechanics has equal momentum. Some of the setup takes time to become dramatically urgent, while the third act feels more confident and compensates for some of the earlier looseness.

This is a meaningful criticism rather than a minor technical complaint. A character-driven blockbuster still has to make its emotional development feel integrated with the plot. In Thunderbolts*, the two strands sometimes move in parallel before coming together.

The structure is familiar

The damaged-outsiders team is hardly a new concept. Critics compared the film with Suicide Squad and, more favorably, with Guardians of the Galaxy. The basic shape—a group of unlikeable or reluctant figures forced to cooperate—belongs to a well-established superhero tradition.

The freshness comes from execution: this particular combination of Yelena, Bucky, Red Guardian, Walker, Ghost, Taskmaster, and Bob creates a different emotional balance. But viewers should not expect Thunderbolts* to reinvent the team-up film. Its achievement is to make a familiar template feel unusually human at a moment when the MCU has often seemed overburdened by scale.

The visual style can feel drab

The film’s muted aesthetic supports its interest in isolation and emotional exhaustion, but it can also work against the sense of spectacle expected from a major Marvel release. The Daily Beast praised the focus on despair while criticizing Jake Schreier’s drab visual approach and arguing that the movie does not always create enough contrast between its ordinary-looking world and the darkness associated with the Void.

  • GREAT GIFT CHOICE: You can give it to your family, friends or other people you care about. Great gift choice for Christmas, Thanksgiving, New Year and other important occasions

That tension is worth preserving in any fair assessment. A grounded tone is not automatically a visually compelling one. Thunderbolts* often looks intentionally restrained, but some viewers may experience that restraint as flatness.

The MCU still has a claim on the movie

Although the film is more accessible than its franchise position might suggest, it is not completely standalone. Connections to the wider MCU remain visible, and some critics argued that the knowledge that certain characters are expected to return in Avengers: Doomsday can reduce tension.

This is the paradox of the film’s success. Its characters feel more authentic when they are allowed to be awkward, damaged, and uncertain. Its franchise obligations are most noticeable when the story has to remind viewers that these people are also pieces on a larger board. Thunderbolts* does not escape the MCU machine; it simply gives the machine more emotionally engaging material to work with.

Critical success versus commercial recovery

The early numbers supported the idea of a solid reception without suggesting a return to Marvel’s peak commercial dominance. At the time of its opening weekend, the Associated Press reported an 88% Rotten Tomatoes critics score, an A- CinemaScore, a $76 million domestic opening, and $86.1 million in overseas sales. The AP’s report framed the result as a possible reset rather than a full commercial comeback.

Those figures are historical opening-weekend context, not a current performance snapshot. Aggregator scores and review counts change, and box-office totals should be checked separately if they are updated for publication. The stable conclusion is that the film was received more warmly by critics and audiences than a number of recent MCU projects, but it did not automatically become the kind of cultural event that guarantees a massive launch.

A later Guardian analysis made the distinction especially clear: strong reviews, a recognizable cast, and significant production and marketing costs did not necessarily translate into a breakout box-office run. That does not undermine the film’s creative strengths. It does show that one successful entry cannot, by itself, repair audience fatigue or restore unquestioned confidence in an entire franchise.

If the film makes you curious about the comics

The movie’s lineup is not the beginning or end of the Thunderbolts concept. Marvel’s official team reference establishes the group’s broader comic-book identity and history. The film’s version is its own MCU adaptation, but readers interested in the evolution of Marvel’s antihero teams can explore Thunderbolts comics and collected graphic novels after watching.

That is best approached as optional context rather than required homework. One of Thunderbolts*’s virtues is that its emotional premise is understandable without encyclopedic knowledge of the comics or every previous MCU appearance.

Is this the MCU course correction viewers wanted?

In limited terms, yes. Thunderbolts* identifies several things Marvel has historically done well: a sharply differentiated ensemble, humor that grows out of character, emotional stakes beneath the spectacle, and a willingness to let imperfect people carry the story.

But calling it a complete restoration would overstate the evidence. The pacing is not consistently smooth. Some characters are underdeveloped. The visual style may strike viewers as too muted. The team-up structure is recognizable, and the larger MCU still exerts pressure on the story. The box-office response also suggests that critical goodwill does not instantly erase franchise fatigue.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

What Thunderbolts* proves is more modest—and perhaps more valuable. Marvel can still make a superhero film feel fresh by reducing the emphasis on cosmic scale and increasing the emphasis on emotional specificity. A character does not need to be a flawless icon to carry an event movie. Sometimes it is more compelling to watch a group of wounded people decide that they are not beyond saving.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is Thunderbolts* a good MCU movie?

The first reviews were broadly positive, and the film is widely regarded as a welcome character-driven improvement for the MCU. It is not flawless: critics noted uneven pacing, muted visuals, familiar team-up mechanics, uneven development for some characters, and continuing franchise obligations.

Do I need to watch other Marvel movies before Thunderbolts*?

The film is more accessible than many recent MCU entries, but it is not entirely standalone. Familiarity with Yelena Belova, Bucky Barnes, Red Guardian, John Walker, Ghost, and Valentina Allegra de Fontaine adds context. The film’s central emotional conflict remains understandable without knowing every MCU connection.

When did Thunderbolts* become available at home?

Marvel announced digital availability beginning July 1, 2025, followed by 4K Ultra HD, Blu-ray, and DVD on July 29, 2025. Current retailer stock, pricing, regional availability, and streaming access should be checked because they can change.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Is Thunderbolts* a standalone story?

It works as an individual team-up story, but it remains connected to the wider MCU and its future plans. Those continuity links are manageable for casual viewers, although some critics felt they occasionally reduced the film’s independence and tension.

The Bottom Line

Thunderbolts* earns its “breath of fresh air” reputation by making vulnerable, morally compromised characters the center of the MCU rather than treating them as leftover pieces. Florence Pugh’s Yelena, the reluctant found-family dynamic, and the emotional framing of the Sentry/Void conflict give the film a human scale that many viewers found welcome. Its flaws—uneven pacing, familiar structure, restrained visuals, underdeveloped supporting arcs, and franchise obligations—keep it from being a total reinvention. The fairest verdict is that Thunderbolts* is a credible course correction and a good film on its own terms, not definitive proof that Marvel has completely restored its former dominance.
