We Were Liars follows 17-year-old Cadence Sinclair as she returns to her wealthy family’s private island, Beechwood, one year after an accident she cannot remember. As Cadence tries to reconstruct the missing summer, her relatives and former friends refuse to tell her what happened.

Spoiler warning: This guide covers the principal cast, the Sinclair family tree, the relationship between the Prime Video series and E. Lockhart’s books, the Season 1 ending, and what is currently known about Season 2.

The four Liars

Emily Alyn Lind as Cadence Sinclair

Cadence, usually called Cady, is the series’ central character and the oldest of the younger Sinclair generation. She belongs to the family that owns or controls the Beechwood summer world, but she returns to the island in a vulnerable position: an accident has left her with significant memory loss.

Cadence’s goal is not simply to enjoy another privileged summer. She wants to understand what happened the previous year, why the people closest to her are evasive, and why her memories remain fragmented. Her investigation drives the mystery, while her relationship with Gat supplies the story’s main romantic and emotional thread.

Esther McGregor as Mirren Sinclair

Mirren is one of the four Liars and the daughter of Bess Sinclair. She is presented as an aspiring artist who wants experiences beyond the polished expectations imposed by her family. Her interest in romance and independence places her between the Sinclair ideal of a controlled, perfect life and her own desire to make choices for herself.

As Cadence searches for answers, Mirren is part of the close-knit group whose shared history becomes increasingly difficult to separate from the secrets maintained by the adults.

Joseph Zada as Johnny Sinclair

Johnny is one of the Liars and Carrie Sinclair’s son. The series gives him a more troubled and secretive emotional profile than the family’s public image would suggest. His relationship with Carrie and the secrets surrounding the accident are important parts of the show’s larger family mystery.

Johnny’s position also illustrates how the younger Sinclairs inherit pressures that did not begin with them. The family’s rules, resentments, and concealed history shape the way he relates to both his mother and the other Liars.

Shubham Maheshwari as Gat Patil

Gat is the fourth Liar and Cadence’s first love. He is not a Sinclair by blood. He comes to Beechwood through his uncle, Ed Patil, after the death of Gat’s father, which makes him part of the group while leaving him outside the family’s inherited wealth and traditions.

That outsider-insider position is central to Gat’s character. He has access to the Sinclair world, but he is conscious that he did not inherit it. His relationship with Cadence is therefore tied not only to romance, but also to questions about class, belonging, family loyalty, and who gets to define the rules on Beechwood.

The adult Sinclair family

Caitlin Fitzgerald as Penny Sinclair

Penny is Cadence’s mother and one of Harris and Tipper Sinclair’s three daughters. She tries to manage Cadence’s recovery after the accident while also preserving the family’s established rules and appearance.

That puts Penny in a difficult middle position. She is a mother responding to her daughter’s trauma, but she is also a Sinclair who has been shaped by the family’s insistence on control, status, and silence.

Candice King as Bess Sinclair

Bess is Mirren’s mother and one of the three Sinclair sisters. She is highly invested in the appearance of a perfect family and perfect life. The series gradually suggests that this polished image depends on protecting secrets connected to the family’s past.

Her role helps explain why the younger characters struggle to obtain direct answers. For Bess, maintaining the family image is not merely social performance; it is part of how the Sinclair household operates.

Mamie Gummer as Carrie Sinclair

Carrie is Johnny’s mother, the third Sinclair sister, and Ed Patil’s long-term partner. She is especially concerned about how Johnny’s darker secrets and emotional difficulties may affect the family.

Carrie’s relationship with Ed also gives the adult storyline another version of the outsider question. Ed is close to the family, but closeness does not necessarily mean full acceptance by Harris or equal standing within the Sinclair system.

Rahul Kohli as Ed Patil

Ed is Carrie’s partner and Gat’s uncle. He has been associated with the Sinclair family for roughly a decade, yet he remains aware that Harris has not completely accepted him.

Ed’s position connects Gat to Beechwood while exposing the hierarchy beneath the family’s hospitality. He is close enough to participate in Sinclair life, but not so close that the family’s boundaries disappear.

David Morse as Harris Sinclair

Harris is the Sinclair patriarch, father of Penny, Bess, and Carrie, and the authority figure responsible for defending the family’s traditions, wealth, and social image.

His influence reaches both generations. The three sisters have to negotiate their own adult lives under his authority, while their children grow up within the system Harris has established. His power is one of the main sources of conflict surrounding the Liars.

Wendy Crewson as Tipper Sinclair

Tipper is Harris’s wife and the mother of Penny, Bess, and Carrie. She represents the older generation and the structure into which the three sisters and their children are expected to fit.

Although Harris is the more obvious patriarchal authority, Tipper is an important part of the family’s public and private arrangement. Together, Harris and Tipper embody the traditions that the younger characters both depend on and resist.

The Sinclair family tree explained

The family relationships can be confusing because three of the four Liars are cousins and each is identified through a different Sinclair sister.

  • Harris Sinclair and Tipper Sinclair are the older-generation couple.
  • They have three daughters: Penny, Bess, and Carrie Sinclair.
  • Penny is Cadence’s mother.
  • Bess is Mirren’s mother.
  • Carrie is Johnny’s mother.
  • Ed Patil is Carrie’s partner and Gat’s uncle.
  • Cadence, Mirren, and Johnny are cousins.
  • Gat is their close friend and Cadence’s romantic interest, but he is not a Sinclair cousin.

In simplified form:

Harris Sinclair + Tipper Sinclair
├── Penny Sinclair → Cadence Sinclair
├── Bess Sinclair → Mirren Sinclair
└── Carrie Sinclair + Ed Patil → Johnny Sinclair
└── Ed is Gat Patil’s uncle

What is We Were Liars about?

The series is set around Beechwood, the Sinclair family’s private summer island. Cadence returns at 17 after an unexplained accident has damaged her memory. Her relatives will not give her a straightforward account of the previous summer, and her attempts to recover the truth reveal tensions involving inheritance, family control, class, romance, and long-protected secrets.

The mystery works on two levels. Cadence is trying to discover an external event—what happened on the island—but she is also trying to determine whether her own memories, perceptions, and conversations can be trusted. That uncertainty gives the adaptation its psychological and supernatural ambiguity.

Season 1 ending explained

Major Season 1 spoilers follow.

The finale reveals that Mirren, Johnny, and Gat died in the fire. Cadence’s apparent conversations and interactions with the other three Liars are connected to her trauma and to the show’s deliberately ambiguous supernatural or psychological storytelling.

This revelation changes the meaning of the earlier episodes. The Liars are not simply withholding information from Cadence in the ordinary sense; Cadence is attempting to process a devastating event while experiencing the other three as present. The mystery therefore becomes a story about grief and trauma as well as the Sinclair family’s secrets.

The final movement also points toward the history of the Sinclair mothers—Carrie, Penny, and Bess—which connects the television series to the story explored in Family of Liars.

What is known about Season 2?

Prime Video renewed We Were Liars for Season 2 on September 17, 2025. The renewal announcement said the series would continue internationally and that Julie Plec and Carina Adly MacKenzie would return to expand the world of E. Lockhart’s novels.

Available reporting indicates that Season 2 is expected to move back to the mothers’ teenage years on Beechwood Island, using Family of Liars as a foundation while adding television-original material. That means the likely focus is the earlier generation—Carrie, Penny, and Bess—rather than a straightforward continuation of Cadence’s central Season 1 investigation.

Book versus television adaptation

The series adapts E. Lockhart’s bestselling 2014 novel We Were Liars. Both versions share the central Cadence, Beechwood, and amnesia mystery, but readers should not assume that every television subplot, characterization, or revelation is identical to the novel.

The adaptation has room to expand the adult generation and make the family’s social structure more visible. The book remains the original source for the central story, while the series develops its own screen continuity. The safest approach is to treat the novel and show as related versions of the same premise rather than expecting a scene-by-scene reproduction.

If you want to compare the two versions, start with the original We Were Liars novel. It provides the source framework for Cadence’s story without requiring you to assume that every television detail appears in the book.

How to read the We Were Liars books

E. Lockhart’s official site identifies three books in the same universe:

  1. We Were Liars — the original novel centered on Cadence and the Beechwood mystery.
  2. Family of Liars — a prequel set 27 years before We Were Liars, following Carrie, Penny, and Bess as teenagers on Beechwood Island.
  3. We Fell Apart — the third book in the shared universe.

Lockhart recommends reading We Were Liars first because the other books contain spoilers for it. That order is also the clearest choice for viewers who have just finished Season 1: begin with the original story, then read Family of Liars as the Sinclair mothers’ prequel, and continue to We Fell Apart if you want more of the wider universe.

Family of Liars is not a direct continuation of Cadence’s story. It goes back a generation and explores the earlier tragedy and family rules that shape the later Sinclair children. It is consequently the most relevant book for readers curious about the reported foundation of Season 2.

Who should watch or read We Were Liars?

The series is best suited to viewers who enjoy family mysteries built around unreliable memory, hidden wealth, emotionally complicated friendships, and a shifting boundary between psychological trauma and the supernatural. The family tree is important, but the show is not simply a genealogy puzzle: its central question is how the Sinclair family’s rules affect the younger people raised inside them.

Viewers who prefer to avoid book spoilers should watch Season 1 before reading discussions of the novel or Family of Liars. Readers who already know the novel should expect the television adaptation to share the foundation while making its own choices about character emphasis and the wider Sinclair history.

Is Season 2 of We Were Liars confirmed?

Yes. Prime Video renewed the series on September 17, 2025. Available reporting points toward a story about the Sinclair mothers as teenagers, using Family of Liars as a foundation. A release date should not be treated as confirmed without an official announcement.

The Bottom Line

We Were Liars centers on Cadence Sinclair, her cousins Mirren and Johnny, and their friend Gat Patil—the four young people known as the Liars. The adults’ secrets and the family’s rigid social structure drive the mystery, while Season 1’s ending reframes the story through Cadence’s trauma. Season 2 has been renewed and is expected to explore the mothers’ generation, but no release date should be stated until Prime Video confirms one.
