Diane Keaton, the Oscar-winning actress whose signature roles included Annie Hall and Kay Adams-Corleone in The Godfather films, died on October 11, 2025. She was 79.

Born Diane Hall in Los Angeles on January 5, 1946, Keaton built a career that reached far beyond the two films most closely associated with her. She was an actor, director, producer, writer, photographer and design-minded cultural figure whose work moved between intimate drama, broad comedy, television and film.

Why Diane Keaton’s two defining roles mattered

Keaton’s career was unusually broad, but the roles named in the news of her death capture two different dimensions of her screen legacy.

In Annie Hall, she created a comic, romantic and visually distinctive character who helped make the 1977 film a landmark. In The Godfather series, she played Kay Adams, later Kay Corleone, a woman watching the man she loves become someone she can no longer easily recognize. One role established Keaton as a defining presence of modern American comedy; the other placed her inside one of cinema’s most consequential family dramas.

Annie Hall made Keaton an Oscar winner—and a style icon

Keaton played the title character in Woody Allen’s 1977 romantic comedy Annie Hall. Her performance was conversational, expressive and often deliberately awkward, giving the character an unusual mixture of independence, vulnerability and comic self-awareness.

At the 50th Academy Awards on April 3, 1978, Keaton won the Oscar for Actress in a Leading Role. The film won four Oscars in total: Best Picture, Directing, Original Screenplay and Actress in a Leading Role, from five nominations.

The film’s influence was not limited to its dialogue or relationship story. Keaton’s wardrobe, designed by Ruth Morley, became an important part of Annie’s identity and of the movie’s cultural afterlife. The character’s use of tailored jackets, vests, ties, trousers and other menswear-inspired pieces helped establish a look that audiences and fashion writers continued to reference. That legacy should not be reduced to the claim that Keaton single-handedly invented the style; its power came from the collaboration between the performance, the costume design and the character’s unusual screen presence.

Keaton’s comic timing was central to the effect. Annie could be funny without behaving like a conventional movie-comedy heroine, and her verbal hesitations and physical reactions made the character feel less polished—and more recognizably human—than many romantic leads of the period.

Kay Corleone was more than Michael’s wife

Francis Ford Coppola cast Keaton as Kay Adams opposite Al Pacino’s Michael Corleone in The Godfather (1972). She returned for The Godfather Part II (1974) and The Godfather Part III (1990).

Kay begins the story outside the Corleone family’s criminal world. That position gives the audience a point of entry into the family and makes her increasingly difficult relationship with Michael emotionally legible. As Michael assumes control and turns further toward violence and secrecy, Kay becomes a witness to a transformation she initially does not fully understand and ultimately cannot accept without resistance.

One of the trilogy’s defining images comes when Kay lights candles in a church after recognizing the truth about Michael’s nature. The scene captures her dramatic function: she is not simply the protagonist’s romantic partner or a supporting spouse. She is a moral and emotional counterpoint to him, and her perspective helps measure the cost of his choices.

Keaton’s performance in the trilogy is notably restrained. Kay is often surrounded by grand declarations, ritual and violence, yet Keaton gives the character a grounded interior life. Her reactions communicate the limits of Michael’s power over her—and the damage caused by the world he has chosen.

A career that extended well beyond two classics

Although Annie Hall and The Godfather dominate many introductions to Keaton, they represent only part of her work. Her major film credits also included Reds, Baby Boom, Father of the Bride, The First Wives Club, Marvin’s Room, Something’s Gotta Give, Morning Glory and Book Club.

She received three additional Academy Award nominations for Reds, Marvin’s Room and Something’s Gotta Give. Her performance in Something’s Gotta Give also earned her a Golden Globe in 2004. The Hollywood Foreign Press record lists Keaton with nine Golden Globe nominations and two wins, including her recognition for Annie Hall.

These later roles showed why it is misleading to treat Keaton only as the eccentric young woman of Annie Hall or the worried wife in The Godfather. In Baby Boom and Father of the Bride, she brought warmth and comic authority to stories about family and changing expectations. In The First Wives Club, she contributed to an ensemble comedy about women reclaiming agency after betrayal. In Marvin’s Room, she worked in a more painful register, portraying family responsibility and emotional exhaustion.

Something’s Gotta Give demonstrated a different kind of mature romantic-comedy stardom. Keaton’s performance balanced physical comedy with an adult woman’s emotional directness, and the role became one of the most visible later-career highlights of her filmography.

Keaton appeared in more than 60 films and worked with Woody Allen in eight films. Her television work included Amelia Earhart: The Final Flight and The Young Pope, among other projects.

Keaton also worked behind the camera

Acting was only one part of Keaton’s professional life. She directed television projects including episodes of CBS Schoolbreak Special, China Beach, Twin Peaks and Pasadena. Her feature directing credit included Unstrung Heroes.

Her work as a director adds another dimension to a career often discussed primarily through performance and fashion. Keaton was not only a recognizable screen personality; she also participated in shaping stories and productions from behind the camera.

Then Again gave Keaton control of her own story

Keaton’s authorship was especially personal in her memoir, Then Again. The book examines her relationship with her mother, Dorothy Hall, as well as Keaton’s own life and career. It combines Keaton’s recollections with material from her mother’s journals, creating a layered account of memory, family and public identity.

Published in paperback by Random House Trade Paperbacks in 2012, the documented edition runs 336 pages and carries ISBN 9780812980950. The publisher identifies it as a New York Times bestseller.

For readers who want more than a chronological filmography, Then Again by Diane Keaton is the most direct place to encounter Keaton’s own account of the person behind the roles. It is a memoir about family and self-understanding, not a book about the circumstances of her death.

Where to revisit Keaton’s work

Availability changes by country, platform and date. In the United States, a JustWatch search during the research for this article listed Annie Hall through free ad-supported services and for rental or purchase from digital storefronts including Amazon Video, Apple TV Store and Fandango at Home. Readers should check the current listing before assuming that a title remains available on a particular service.

Physical editions can be a more stable option for viewers revisiting Keaton’s work, though specific DVD and Blu-ray editions, prices and inventory also vary. Annie Hall is the natural starting point for her Oscar-winning performance; the three Godfather films provide the fullest view of Kay Corleone’s arc.

What is known about her death

Keaton died on October 11, 2025, at age 79. The initial reporting confirmed the date and her age. It did not establish a detailed medical account, and there is no need to add an unverified cause of death to understand her legacy.

The most accurate remembrance is therefore also the broadest one: Diane Keaton was an Oscar-winning performer whose work crossed romantic comedy, crime drama, family films and serious ensemble pieces. She helped make Annie Hall an enduring cultural figure, gave Kay Corleone moral force within The Godfather saga, and continued to work as an actor, director and writer across decades.
