His & Hers Twist Ending Explained: Who’s the Real Killer in Netflix’s Thriller?

Alice is the real killer in Netflix’s His & Hers—not Catherine/Lexy. Here’s the motive, the clues, the lake-house twist, and the secret Anna keeps from Jack.

Spoilers for all six episodes of Netflix’s His & Hers. The real killer is Alice, Anna’s mother—not Lexy Jones, whose real identity is Catherine Alexis Kelly. Catherine is dangerous and does attack Anna, but the apparent solution at the lake house is a false ending. Alice confesses in a letter that she murdered Rachel, Helen, and Zoe, then planted evidence to make Catherine look responsible.

Alice’s motive is revenge for the sexual assault that destroyed Anna’s adolescence. She also wants to bring Anna back home, repair Anna’s relationship with Jack, and reunite the family after the death of Anna and Jack’s baby, Charlotte. The final twist is therefore not simply that Alice is the murderer: it is that Anna learns the truth and chooses not to tell Jack, whose sister Zoe was one of Alice’s victims.

Who is the killer in His & Hers?

Alice is the serial killer. In the final sixteen minutes, Anna reads a letter in which her mother admits that she killed Rachel, Helen, and Zoe. Alice also explains that she framed Catherine by planting evidence in Catherine’s home.

The confession changes the meaning of the entire investigation. Anna and Jack had been led toward Catherine because Catherine had a strong revenge motive, a concealed identity, and a history of frightening behavior. But Catherine did not kill the women. The series deliberately gives viewers a convincing answer before replacing it with the real one.

Alice’s crimes are emotionally connected to Anna, but that does not make them justified. The finale presents her violence as a disturbing form of maternal protection and revenge—not as an acceptable response to what happened to her daughter.

Why viewers suspect Catherine, or “Lexy Jones”

The woman Anna knows as Lexy Jones is actually Catherine Alexis Kelly, a girl from Anna’s school years. At St. Hilary’s, Rachel was the dominant student, with Helen and Zoe close behind her. Catherine was an outsider who was mistreated by the group.

Catherine later changes her appearance, takes the surname Jones through her marriage to cameraman Richard Jones, and reinvents herself as Lexy. Anna does not recognize her when Lexy becomes a professional rival at the television station. Alice, however, recognizes Catherine, which becomes another detail that takes on greater significance in retrospect.

Catherine has almost everything a conventional mystery needs in a suspect:

  • She has a clear grievance against Rachel, Helen, and Zoe.
  • She has returned under a new identity.
  • She conceals her past from Anna and the people around her.
  • Her family history includes a death connected to a cruel act.
  • She becomes openly violent during the confrontation at the lake house.

That evidence is not meaningless. Catherine is not innocent in every respect, and the show does not turn her into a harmless victim. But her secrets are designed to make her look like the murderer even though Alice is using the situation to direct suspicion toward her.

Catherine’s history with Andrea

Catherine’s backstory makes the red herring more complicated. At the family lake house, Catherine’s sister Andrea taunted her. Before a boat trip, Catherine emptied Andrea’s inhaler. Andrea then suffered a respiratory emergency on the water and died because the inhaler was empty.

The story frames this as a spiteful act with catastrophic consequences rather than clearly established, premeditated murder. It nevertheless shows that Catherine can act recklessly and cruelly when she feels provoked. That history makes the present-day accusations plausible.

At the lake house, Catherine’s confrontation with Anna turns violent. Catherine tries to shoot Anna, Jack intervenes, and Priya shoots Catherine first because Priya believes she has identified the serial killer. Catherine dies, Richard is arrested, and Richard insists that his wife was not responsible for the murders.

Her death appears to close the case, but it is a deliberately incomplete resolution. Catherine was dangerous, and she did have a reason to hate the victims. She was simply not Alice’s killer.

Alice’s motive: revenge for Anna’s assault

The murders originate in an event from Anna’s sixteenth birthday. Anna’s old video recordings reveal that she was sexually assaulted in the woods. Rachel orchestrated the attack, while Helen and Zoe participated in it or watched it. Catherine was also assaulted and fled, leaving Anna alone and vulnerable.

Anna never tells Alice, Jack, or anyone else what happened. That silence is essential to the plot: Alice does not initially know the full reason her daughter has been damaged by the past.

Anna’s life later collapses in another way when her baby, Charlotte Alice Harper, dies suddenly while in Alice’s care. The loss causes Anna to withdraw from her career, her marriage, and her hometown. The murders begin around the anniversary of Charlotte’s death, tying Alice’s revenge to two different forms of grief:

  1. Anna’s buried trauma from the assault.
  2. The family’s recent devastation after Charlotte’s death.

Alice eventually watches Anna’s old recordings and discovers what happened in the woods. She identifies Rachel, Helen, and Zoe as the people who harmed Anna and decides to punish them. But revenge is not her only goal. Alice also wants to draw Anna back to the place and people she abandoned, reconnect Anna with Jack, and restore the family after Charlotte’s death.

That combination explains why Alice’s letter is so disturbing. She describes murder through the language of love, protection, and family repair. The emotional logic is comprehensible, but the actions remain murder, manipulation, framing, and concealment.

How Alice hides in plain sight

Alice takes advantage of assumptions about her age and apparent mental state. Rather than behaving like an efficient, obvious killer, she creates the impression that she is confused, declining, or incapable of organizing a series of murders.

Several odd details are part of that performance:

  • After the first killing, Alice walks naked in public, encouraging people to interpret her behavior as evidence of cognitive decline.
  • She puts eggshells in breakfast so that others will think she is losing control or becoming confused.
  • She uses domestic strangeness and apparent helplessness as camouflage.

The series also plants a physical clue. Alice is barefoot after Rachel’s murder, and bare footprints are found at the crime scene. Investigators focus on a boot-print theory and misread the evidence, failing to understand that separate sets of bare footprints are being conflated.

In hindsight, Alice’s performance of vulnerability is not proof of incapacity. It is an alibi strategy. She wants people to see an eccentric older woman who might need supervision, not someone capable of planning revenge, manipulating an investigation, and planting evidence.

Why the murders begin after Charlotte’s death

Charlotte’s death is not a side plot. It explains why Anna and Jack are estranged and why Alice’s plan has a second purpose beyond revenge.

Anna and Jack’s marriage does not end because their love disappears. It breaks under the pressure of losing their baby. Anna withdraws from her old life, while the grief creates distance between the couple. The murder investigation forces them into the same orbit again. They investigate together, suspect one another, and are eventually pushed to confront the past that Anna has kept hidden.

Alice’s campaign therefore works on two levels. She kills the women she believes destroyed Anna’s adolescence, and she creates circumstances that bring Anna and Jack back together. The timing around Charlotte’s death anniversary connects the killings to Alice’s private mourning and to her belief that she can rebuild the family by controlling the truth.

What the final letter reveals

When Alice’s letter reaches Anna, Anna learns that her mother was responsible for the murders. The letter also reveals that Alice acted for Anna rather than for personal gain. She wanted to punish the people involved in the assault and pull her daughter back toward home, Jack, and the family.

Anna and Alice then exchange a wordless look. The scene does not show a conventional police confession, an arrest, or a clear moral confrontation. Its plot meaning is nevertheless unambiguous: Anna understands that Alice is the killer and appears to understand why she did it.

The emotional meaning is intentionally less certain. Anna may be horrified, grateful, overwhelmed, or some combination of all three. The series leaves that response unresolved because the real question is what Anna does with the knowledge.

What happens to Anna and Jack after the ending?

One year after Catherine’s death, Anna and Jack are together again. Their new life includes several signs of apparent recovery:

  • They have adopted Meg, Zoe’s orphaned daughter.
  • They have moved into a new home in Atlanta.
  • Anna has returned to the anchor desk.
  • Anna is pregnant.
  • Jack has returned to the Atlanta Police Department.
  • They can visit Charlotte’s grave together.

On the surface, the couple has rebuilt the life that Alice wanted them to have. But the recovery is unstable because it rests on a major omission. Anna knows Alice killed Zoe—Jack’s sister—and Jack does not know.

What secret does Anna keep from Jack?

Anna keeps the identity of the real killer from Jack. She does not tell him that Alice murdered Zoe, stabbed and drowned her, and then remained free.

That omission is especially significant because Jack is a detective and Zoe is his sister. Even if Zoe participated in the assault against Anna, Jack would struggle to accept that his mother-in-law killed her. The finale makes clear that Anna understands this and chooses silence.

Anna’s silence makes her complicit in preserving Alice’s freedom, even though the show does not present her as an accomplice to the murders themselves. It also creates a new secret inside the marriage. Anna and Jack have repaired their relationship, but they have not achieved complete honesty or closure.

What the title means at the end

His & Hers repeatedly divides the story between competing versions of events. Anna and Jack investigate the same murder while each suspects the other, and the show keeps asking who controls the truth.

The finale extends that idea into the family’s future. Jack has his version: he believes the killer has been identified and that he and Anna have survived the crisis. Anna has another version: she knows the killer is Alice, knows why Alice acted, and knows that Zoe was one of the victims. Alice has her own version in the letter, presenting the killings as an act done for her daughter.

The happy ending is therefore conditional. Anna and Jack are together, but their marriage depends on a secret. The murders remain beneath the family’s new happiness, exactly as the show’s final exchange suggests.

Did the Netflix series change the book’s killer?

No. Netflix’s adaptation is based on Alice Feeney’s 2020 novel His & Hers, and the book also makes Anna’s mother the killer. The television version relocates the story to Dahlonega and Atlanta, Georgia, while retaining the central final twist.

Viewers who want to compare the two versions can read Alice Feeney’s His & Hers novel, the source material for the six-episode limited thriller. The adaptation retains the key identity of the killer, but individual plot details, character presentation, and setting should not be assumed to be identical.

How to read the ending’s main clues

Clue What it seems to mean What it means after Alice’s confession
Alice’s apparent decline She may be confused, fragile, or incapable of planning violence. She is performing helplessness to make herself an unlikely suspect.
The eggshells and strange domestic behavior A sign that Alice is losing control. Part of the camouflage supporting that impression.
Bare footprints after Rachel’s murder Evidence investigators misinterpret while pursuing the boot-print theory. A clue that points back to Alice’s presence.
Catherine’s revenge motive A reason to believe Lexy returned to punish her former tormentors. A credible motive that Alice exploits while framing Catherine.
The lake-house shooting Confirmation that Catherine is the killer. Proof that Catherine is dangerous, not proof that she committed the murders.
The anniversary of Charlotte’s death A detail associated with the family’s grief. A link between Alice’s mourning, Anna’s trauma, and the timing of the killings.
Anna’s old recordings Evidence of a painful past. The source through which Alice discovers the assault and identifies her targets.

Is Alice justified?

The show makes Alice’s motive emotionally understandable without making it morally or legally defensible. Anna was assaulted, and Rachel, Helen, and Zoe are connected to that crime. Alice also believes she is rescuing her daughter from isolation and restoring a broken family. Those facts explain her choices, but they do not excuse murder or framing an innocent person.

The Catherine twist is important here. If Catherine had been the killer, the story would have been a more familiar revenge narrative about a survivor returning to punish former abusers. By making Alice the killer, the series shifts the emphasis to the dangerous consequences of someone else taking control of Anna’s trauma. Alice does not give Anna justice or agency; she decides what Anna needs and kills in her name.

The ending explained in one sentence

Alice killed the women connected to Anna’s assault, framed Catherine as the murderer, and succeeded in bringing Anna and Jack back together—but Anna’s decision to hide the truth about Zoe leaves their apparently happy future built on another lie.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is Lexy Jones the killer in His & Hers?

No. Lexy Jones is Catherine Alexis Kelly, and she is a convincing red herring because she has a revenge motive and a violent history. She attacks Anna at the lake house, but Alice is the person who killed Rachel, Helen, and Zoe.

Why does Alice kill Rachel, Helen, and Zoe?

Alice discovers from Anna’s old recordings that the three women were involved in Anna’s sexual assault when Anna was sixteen. She kills them for revenge and also uses the murders to draw Anna back home and reconnect her with Jack after Charlotte’s death.

Does Jack know that Alice is the killer?

No. Anna learns the truth from Alice’s letter but does not tell Jack. This is especially serious because Zoe, one of Alice’s victims, is Jack’s sister.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

What happens to Catherine?

Catherine, who has been living as Lexy Jones, tries to shoot Anna at the lake house. Priya shoots Catherine first, killing her. Catherine is not the serial killer, although her secrets and violent behavior make her appear responsible.

Is the Netflix series based on a book?

Yes. It adapts Alice Feeney’s 2020 novel His & Hers. The novel also ends with Anna’s mother as the killer, although the adaptation moves the setting to Dahlonega and Atlanta, Georgia.

The Bottom Line

The final twist is that Alice is the killer. She murders the women tied to Anna’s teenage assault, frames Catherine/Lexy, and uses the investigation to pull Anna and Jack back together after Charlotte’s death. Anna understands the truth but keeps it from Jack, leaving the family’s new beginning—and the series’ apparent happy ending—built on a final, devastating secret.
