Recommended Free Tools
Short answer: the seven lawful alternatives named in the original December 2020 list were FandangoNow, Vudu, Netflix, YouTube, Rakuten Viki, public-domain movie archives, and TVPlayer. Some remain useful, but they are not equivalent: Vudu is for individual rentals and purchases, Netflix is subscription-based, Viki specializes in Asian programming, public-domain archives focus on older films, and TVPlayer is geographically limited.
There is also an important safety distinction. Showbox was not a licensed mainstream streaming service. Court filings described the app as providing access to unauthorized copyrighted copies, while the FTC has warned that illegal streaming apps and add-ons can expose devices—and potentially other devices on the same wireless network—to malware. Avoid Showbox clones, unofficial APKs, and mirror sites. The safer replacement is an official, licensed service.
First, a note about the December 2020 date
The original article behind this title was published on April 8, 2020, although the title here specifies December 2020. The seven recommendations below are therefore best understood as a historical snapshot, not a current ranking or guarantee that every service has the same catalog, price, app, or availability today.
One major change is already clear: FandangoNow was folded into Vudu after Fandango acquired Vudu from Walmart in 2020. It should not be treated as a separate current service. Other services have also changed their catalogs, plans, territories, and device support.

For a current viewer, the central question is not “Which piracy app still works?” It is “What kind of legal viewing experience do I want?” The guide below keeps the original seven names while explaining what each one actually offers.
The seven original Showbox alternatives
| Alternative | Business model | Best for | Main limitation |
|---|---|---|---|
| FandangoNow → Vudu | Rental and purchase; selected free ad-supported titles | Recent releases and specific movies | Not an unlimited free service |
| Vudu | Rental and purchase; selected free ad-supported titles | Watching one particular movie legally | Prices and catalog vary |
| Netflix | Paid subscription | Originals and broad on-demand viewing | Requires a subscription; catalog varies by country |
| YouTube | Free, rental, purchase, and user-uploaded content | Official channels, classics, and public-domain films | Not every upload is authorized |
| Rakuten Viki | Free and paid options | Korean and other Asian dramas | Title availability is regional |
| Public-domain movie archives | Generally free | Older films and classic cinema | Rights status must be checked carefully |
| TVPlayer | Live and catch-up television, with territory-dependent plans | Viewers in supported countries | Not a universal service, especially for U.S. viewers |
1. Vudu—the current path from FandangoNow
Best for: renting or buying a particular recent movie.
FandangoNow was included in the original list because it emphasized recent releases, a substantial movie and television catalog, and higher-quality options such as 4K and HDR. That recommendation now needs a correction: FandangoNow migrated into Vudu, so readers looking for that type of service should follow the Vudu path instead.
Vudu is a lawful on-demand rental and purchase platform. It also has a selection of free, ad-supported movies. That makes it useful when you already know what you want to watch and do not want another monthly subscription. It does not, however, function as a free replacement for an app that attempted to aggregate a large amount of content without authorization.
Catalog availability, rental windows, purchase prices, supported devices, and video formats can change. Check the current listing in your country before paying, particularly if 4K or HDR matters to you.
2. Netflix
Best for: an all-purpose paid subscription and original programming.
Netflix was one of the most obvious legal alternatives in the original article because it combines on-demand films, series, documentaries, recommendations, and original productions. It is a strong option for households that watch regularly and prefer a predictable subscription experience over paying separately for individual movies.
Rank #2
- Superior Display, Swift Connectivity: Elevate your viewing experience to unparalleled clarity with 8K@60Hz, and enjoy smoother visuals and reduced lag with support for 4K@120Hz and 4K@60Hz.

- What You Get: HDMI Cable (6 ft, 8K), welcome guide, 18-month warranty, and our friendly customer service.
The trade-off is equally important: Netflix is not free. Its plans, simultaneous-stream rules, download features, supported resolution, catalog, and title availability vary by country and change over time. Do not rely on old prices or on a particular film being available simply because it appeared in a 2020 recommendation.
3. YouTube
Best for: free classics, public-domain material, and official channels.
YouTube contains several different kinds of video: official studio and distributor uploads, public-domain films, independent productions, rentals, purchases, and user-uploaded material. That variety makes it useful, but it also means that a full movie appearing on YouTube is not automatically authorized.
For the safest results, look for an official studio, distributor, filmmaker, broadcaster, or clearly identified public-domain source. YouTube’s movie area may also offer rentals, purchases, and free ad-supported viewing depending on location. The Library of Congress has documented public-domain National Film Registry titles being made available through YouTube, which is a better model than trusting an unknown account that has uploaded a recent commercial film.
Use the same caution with “free movie” searches as you would anywhere else: an unfamiliar channel, a suspicious download prompt, or a request to install an APK is a reason to leave the page.

4. Rakuten Viki
Best for: Korean, Chinese, Japanese, Taiwanese, and other Asian dramas and films.
Rakuten Viki is a particularly strong niche alternative for viewers whose main interest is Asian television and cinema. Its catalog has included Korean dramas, Chinese dramas, Japanese and Taiwanese programming, movies, and related information about performers and shows. Recommendation tools can also make it easier to find something similar to a series you have finished.

Viki offers both free and paid viewing, so do not assume that every title is available without payment. Some programs may require a subscription, may contain advertising, or may be unavailable in a particular territory because of licensing restrictions. Those limitations are normal for a licensed service and are preferable to using an unauthorized copy.
5. Public-domain movie archives
Best for: classic cinema without a monthly subscription.
Quick wins for a faster PC:
Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →The original list referred to PublicDomainMovies.net as a collection of older films that could be streamed in a browser without required registration. Today, it is more useful to think of this recommendation as a category rather than as an automatic endorsement of every site using “public domain” in its name.
Public-domain status can be complicated. It may differ by country and may not cover every element of a film. A restored print, soundtrack, screenplay, underlying story, or particular recording can involve separate rights. A film being old—or appearing on a website labeled “public domain”—does not by itself prove that every online copy is lawful.
U.S. readers should favor reputable archives and references, including Library of Congress resources, and verify the status of a specific work when legality matters. This route is excellent for silent films, early animation, historical documentaries, and older features, but it will not provide the current Hollywood catalog that attracted many people to Showbox.
6. TVPlayer
Best for: live or catch-up television in supported territories.

Geography is the decisive limitation. TVPlayer should not be presented as a universal U.S. replacement for Showbox. Its current channels, plans, and availability must be checked for the viewer’s country. Do not assume that a U.K. offering or a U.S. help page means the same programming is available in both places, and do not use a VPN to evade territorial licensing rules.
7. FandangoNow—the historical recommendation
Best for, historically: recent releases and premium picture quality.
FandangoNow appeared separately in the original seven because it was a paid rental-and-purchase service with a focus on new releases, television, and formats such as 4K and HDR. For historical fidelity, it belongs in this list. For current practical advice, it does not belong beside Vudu as an independent option: the service was migrated into Vudu.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches2Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors3Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteIf an old article, search result, or device menu still mentions FandangoNow, treat that as legacy information and look for the current Vudu experience instead. The important recommendation survives—the lawful rental or purchase of a specific release—but the brand relationship has changed.

Modern update: legal free streaming expanded
Since the original list was assembled, free ad-supported streaming has become a more prominent lawful option. Tubi offers free, ad-supported movies and television on the web and on devices including Roku, Fire TV, mobile platforms, and consoles. Pluto TV combines live channels with on-demand movies and shows. Plex offers free ad-supported movies, television, and live channels across many devices.
These services are not identical to Showbox: they are licensed, supported by advertising, and limited by catalog and territory. Their availability and current title lists can change, so check the official service in your location.
Library services: free, but eligibility-dependent
Kanopy provides curated films at no charge to users whose libraries or educational institutions participate. Hoopla can provide movies and other media through participating libraries. In both cases, “free” generally means that an eligible library card or institutional account supplies access; it does not mean that every library in every country offers the same catalog.
Best Value
- Real 8K HDMI certified cable: The HDMI cables pass HDMI 2.1 Certified. The HDMI Cable delivers 10K 8K@60Hz and 4K@240Hz higher resolution, 4 times higher than 4K@60Hz. The advanced technology makes a remarkable improvement in image clarity and sharpness
- 48Gbps ultra high speed: The HDMI 2.1 Cable with 48Gbps bandwidth delivers uncompressed 8K(7680 x 4320) video and high-speed transmission without signal loss. Make it faster 2.6X than HDMI 2.0(18Gbps). The 4K@240Hz HDMI cord also supports variable refresh rates and QFT to decrease “display latency”. Auto low latency mode and quick media switching for movies and video use the HDMI VRR mechanism to eliminate the blackout period when an HDMI Source device switches its video mode
- Dynamic HDR & eARC: This HDMI Cable features Dynamic HDR to let you capture more details with 12-bit color accuracy and get breathtakingly realistic pictures. The function of eARC (Enhanced Audio Return Channel) directly delivers full-resolution audio, like Dolby Atmos, DTS:X from TV to soundbar/AV receiver. Also Support HDCP 2.3/2.2, Ethernet, 3D
- Enhanced durability: Built with a robust aluminum alloy case, nickel-plated connectors, and a durable nylon braided jacket, HDMI cables can withstand more frequent bending tests and decrease rupture without reducing cable flexibility, ensuring enhanced signal transmission performance and a longer lifespan
- Wide compatibility: Compatible with Apple TV/PS5/PS4 Pro/Roku Stick, Xbox Series X/S/Xbox 360, Nintendo Switch/Switch 2, Wii U, Mac mini M4/M4 Pro, Laptop, PC, Blu-ray player, AV Receiver, TV stick, TV Box, DVD player, LG 8K UHD TV, Samsung G8/G9 QLED TV, Soundbar, Projector, Monitor and more
If you are looking for free streaming with a library card, check your local library’s website first. Ask which services it supports, whether monthly borrowing limits apply, and whether the service works on your television or mobile device. This is often one of the most overlooked lawful alternatives for documentaries, classic films, independent cinema, and educational programming.
Choose an alternative by viewing need
- You want a specific new movie: Try Vudu or another official rental-and-purchase platform. Paying for one title can cost less than maintaining a subscription you will not use.
- You watch frequently and want originals: Netflix is the clearest subscription-based choice from the original list, subject to local catalog and plan differences.
- You want free movies with advertising: Check Tubi, Pluto TV, Plex, and official free offerings on YouTube. Availability depends on country.
- You mainly watch Asian dramas: Start with Rakuten Viki and check whether the particular show is free, ad-supported, subscription-only, or unavailable in your region.
- You enjoy older films: Use reputable public-domain archives and library services. Confirm the rights status rather than trusting a site’s label.
- You want live channels or catch-up television: TVPlayer may fit if you are in a supported territory; it is not a universal service.
- You want to watch on a television: If your TV does not already support the services you use, a Roku streaming stick or comparable certified streaming device can simplify access to legal services such as Tubi, Pluto TV, Plex, YouTube, and—in supported circumstances—library apps. The device does not provide content by itself and does not make unauthorized streams lawful.
Safety checklist for former Showbox users
Avoid downloading any Showbox replacement APK from an unofficial website. The FTC has warned that illegal streaming apps and add-ons can carry malware, including malware that may affect other devices connected to the same wireless network. Google likewise advises caution when installing apps from outside official app stores.
- Do not install a clone just because a search result calls it “the new Showbox.” A new name does not make an app licensed or safe.
- Do not disable security protections or follow instructions telling you to sideload an unknown package, grant unusual permissions, or install a second “player” or “codec.”
- If you already installed one, stop using it and disconnect it from sensitive accounts. Uninstall the app if possible, update the operating system, and run a reputable security scan. If the device behaves suspiciously, change important passwords from a known-clean device and consider professional help or a factory reset after backing up essential files.
- Check other devices on the same network. An infected phone, tablet, computer, or streaming box can create risks beyond the device on which the APK was installed.
- Do not assume a VPN solves the problem. A VPN does not grant copyright permission, turn an unauthorized stream into a licensed one, or guarantee that an APK is malware-free.
Bottom line for documentary and film viewers
The original seven recommendations still explain the main lawful viewing models, but they should not be treated as a current 2020 ranking. FandangoNow is now a historical name whose successor path is Vudu. Netflix remains a paid subscription option, YouTube requires source-by-source judgment, Rakuten Viki is the specialist choice for Asian programming, public-domain archives are best for older cinema, and TVPlayer depends heavily on geography.
For no-cost legal viewing today, also investigate Tubi, Pluto TV, Plex, official YouTube channels, and participating-library services such as Kanopy or Hoopla. The safest replacement for Showbox is not another unofficial APK; it is the combination of licensed services that matches what you actually watch.

Frequently Asked Questions
Was Showbox a legal streaming service?
No. Showbox was not an ordinary licensed mainstream streamer. Court filings described it as providing access to unauthorized copies of copyrighted works. Unofficial clones and APK mirrors should also be treated as both legal and security risks.
Is FandangoNow still available as a separate service?
No. FandangoNow was migrated into Vudu after Fandango acquired Vudu. The current recommendation for legal rentals and purchases is therefore Vudu, subject to current local availability.
Which Showbox alternative is free?
The original list included free or partly free options such as YouTube, public-domain movie archives, and some Rakuten Viki content. Modern legal free options also include ad-supported services such as Tubi, Pluto TV, and Plex, plus library services such as Kanopy or Hoopla where a participating institution provides access.
Is everything on YouTube legal to watch?
No. YouTube hosts official uploads, public-domain films, rentals, purchases, and user-uploaded material. Prefer official studio, distributor, broadcaster, filmmaker, or clearly public-domain sources rather than assuming every full-film upload is authorized.
The Tool Desk
Outbyte Driver Updater FREEFix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Outbyte PC Repair FREEClear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →Can I use a VPN to make Showbox legal?
No. A VPN does not provide copyright permission, make an unauthorized stream licensed, or guarantee that an unofficial APK is safe. It also should not be used to evade territorial licensing restrictions.
The Bottom Line
The best lawful choice depends on the viewing need: Vudu for one-off rentals, Netflix for a paid all-purpose subscription, Rakuten Viki for Asian dramas, reputable public-domain archives for classics, and Tubi, Pluto TV, Plex, YouTube, or participating-library services for no-cost options. Avoid Showbox clones and unofficial APKs rather than treating them as safe replacements.
