Not every release is free, and the available price and formats are set by the artist or label. A Bandcamp purchase is for the access described by the release’s terms. 2. Qobuz: best for permanent lossless and Hi-Res downloads
Qobuz combines a streaming service with a digital download store. However, a free download is not automatically cleared for every use. A track’s permissions may allow personal listening but impose conditions on commercial use, attribution, or other forms of distribution. FMA’s central strength is not that every song has identical permissions—it is that the license can differ from track to track. Why the license matters
A Creative Commons BY track may permit commercial adaptation if you provide the required attribution. An NC restriction can make a song unsuitable for a monetized video, advertisement, or business presentation. An ND restriction can prevent adaptations, which may matter if you plan to edit, remix, or synchronize the recording with other material. ShareAlike terms may require adaptations to be distributed under compatible terms.
Read the individual track page rather than relying on the fact that the archive is free. SoundCloud is primarily a discovery and streaming platform, but some creators enable an official download button for individual tracks. According to SoundCloud’s download instructions, users generally need to be signed in on the web, and not every track is downloadable. When a download is permitted, SoundCloud says the listener receives a copy in the original file format uploaded by the creator. Playlists cannot be downloaded as a whole through this feature.
The practical rule is simple: if the official download button appears, use it. If it does not, the uploader has not made an official file download available. Do not turn to a third-party stream-ripping site to bypass that choice. SoundCloud separately offers subscription-based offline listening, but that saves access within the service; it is not the same as receiving a permanent audio file.
Even an enabled download does not automatically grant permission to redistribute, remix, synchronize, or commercially use the recording. Check the creator’s description, license, or other stated terms before using it outside personal listening. SoundCloud also warns against unauthorized stream ripping in its stream-ripper guidance.
Choose SoundCloud if: you want a specific creator-provided download and the official download control is present.
Permanent downloads versus offline listening
