Maria was Sara Lownds’s daughter from an earlier marriage and was adopted by Dylan. Jesse, Anna, Samuel, and Jakob were born to Dylan and Sara, while Desiree is Dylan’s daughter with his second wife, Carolyn Dennis.
Only some of Dylan’s children have substantial public careers. Jesse became a film director and media executive, Jakob became a Grammy-winning musician, and Desiree has acting credits. Maria, Anna, and Samuel have generally kept much more of their lives private.

These names and the family relationships are also reflected in established biographical summaries of Dylan, including Biography.com’s Bob Dylan biography. The six-child count is sometimes misunderstood because it includes Maria, whom Dylan adopted after marrying Sara in November 1965.
Meet Bob Dylan’s six children
1. Maria Lownds Dylan
Maria was Sara Lownds’s daughter from an earlier marriage. Bob Dylan adopted her after he and Sara married, making Maria part of the family and part of the standard count of Dylan’s six children.
#1 Best Overall
There is comparatively little authoritative, current public information about Maria’s career or personal life. That lack of detail should not be filled with speculation: she has not maintained the same public profile as Jesse, Jakob, or Desiree.
2. Jesse Byron Dylan
Born on January 6, 1966, Jesse was Bob and Sara Dylan’s first biological child. He pursued a career primarily in film and media rather than following his father into music.
Jesse’s directing credits include How High, American Wedding, and Kicking & Screaming. He also directed the 2008 “Yes We Can” music video. His work has made him the most prominent of Dylan’s children outside the recording and performing world.
3. Anna Lea Dylan
Anna, born July 11, 1967, was Bob and Sara Dylan’s second biological child. She is identified in established family biographies, but she has maintained a relatively private public profile.
Reliable public sources do not provide enough current information to support a detailed account of her profession, residence, relationships, or family life. The responsible conclusion is simply that Anna is one of Dylan’s six children and has largely stayed out of the public spotlight.
Rank #2
4. Samuel Isaac Abram Dylan
Samuel was born on July 30, 1968, and was Bob and Sara Dylan’s third biological child. As with Anna, established summaries document his place in the family but offer limited verified information about his adult life and work.
That limited record is important context. Not every member of a famous family is a public figure, and there is no reliable basis for turning the gaps in Samuel’s biography into claims about his career or relationship with his father.
5. Jakob Luke Dylan
Born December 9, 1969, Jakob is Bob and Sara Dylan’s youngest biological child and the one who most clearly established an independent musical identity.

He has also released solo music. His career includes two Grammy wins, and GRAMMY.com’s coverage of Jakob Dylan and the Wallflowers discusses the band’s 2021 album Exit Wounds.
Jakob’s success has inevitably invited comparisons with his father, but his work is associated with the Wallflowers and his own solo catalog rather than with performing as a member of Bob Dylan’s band.
6. Desiree Gabrielle Dennis-Dylan
Desiree was born in 1986 to Bob Dylan and Carolyn Dennis, who was Dylan’s second wife. Her name is also sometimes presented in public records as Desi Dennis-Dylan.
Desiree has credited screen appearances under the name Desi Dennis-Dylan, including roles or appearances connected with Perfect Harmony, Bupkis, Modern Family, and NCIS. Those credits give her a documented connection to acting, although she has not maintained the same level of public visibility as her father or half-brother Jakob.
Who are Bob Dylan’s sons?
Bob Dylan’s three sons are:
- Jesse Dylan, a film director, producer, and media executive;
- Samuel Dylan, whose adult career and personal life have remained largely private; and
- Jakob Dylan, the Wallflowers frontman and a Grammy-winning musician.
Jesse and Jakob are the sons with the most substantial public careers. Samuel is included in reliable family summaries, but available information does not justify a more detailed public profile.
Who are Bob Dylan’s daughters?
Dylan’s three daughters are:
- Maria Lownds Dylan, Sara Lownds’s daughter from an earlier marriage, whom Dylan adopted;
- Anna Dylan, Bob and Sara Dylan’s daughter; and
- Desiree Dennis-Dylan, Dylan’s daughter with Carolyn Dennis.
Maria and Anna have largely remained private, while Desiree has publicly credited acting work.
Why was Desiree’s family connection kept private?
Bob Dylan and Carolyn Dennis kept their marriage and their daughter’s existence out of the public discussion for years. The subject received renewed attention in 2001 after the publication of Howard Sounes’s biography of Dylan.
Rank #4
Contemporary accounts reported that Dennis issued a statement addressing the disclosure. She rejected the implication that Dylan had simply “hidden” his daughter and said that she and Dylan had mutually chosen privacy to protect Desiree. That framing is more accurate than repeating the sensational shorthand of a “secret daughter” without explaining the parents’ stated position.

Which of Dylan’s children followed him into show business?
Three of the six have well-documented public work in entertainment:
- Jesse Dylan works in film and media and directed several major studio comedies as well as the “Yes We Can” music video.
- Jakob Dylan built a music career with the Wallflowers and as a solo artist. His professional identity is distinct from his father’s, even though comparisons are unavoidable.
- Desiree Dennis-Dylan has acting credits under the name Desi Dennis-Dylan.
Maria, Anna, and Samuel should not be treated as entertainers simply because they are Dylan’s children. The public record about their work is limited.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. What is known—and what is not
The central facts are clear: Bob Dylan has six publicly documented children, including one adopted daughter; four children came from his marriage to Sara Lownds, and one daughter came from his marriage to Carolyn Dennis. Jesse, Jakob, and Desiree have documented entertainment careers.
Best Value
The rest of the family story is intentionally less visible. Publicly available summaries do not establish a comprehensive account of every child’s current work, relationships, home, children, wealth, or closeness to Dylan. Respecting those boundaries produces a more accurate account than treating privacy as an invitation to speculate.
