Jesse Jane, the professional name of Cynthia Ann Howell, died at 43 on January 24, 2024. Moore police found Jane and her boyfriend, Brett Hasenmueller, deceased inside a rental home during a welfare check in Moore, Oklahoma. Early reports described a suspected overdose; later reporting attributed the official determination to the Oklahoma City Medical Examiner’s Office, which found that Jane died accidentally from fentanyl and cocaine toxicity.
What happened to Jesse Jane?
Moore police went to the rental home on the morning of January 24, 2024, after Hasenmueller’s employer reported that he had not been heard from for several days. Officers found Hasenmueller and Jesse Jane deceased inside the residence.
Initial local and national reports said police suspected a drug overdose, but those reports also made clear that the cause of death had not yet been established. The medical examiner was responsible for making the final determination. Reporting published in July 2024 by TMZ, and subsequently summarized by E! News, said the Oklahoma City Medical Examiner’s Office determined that Jane died from an accidental fentanyl and cocaine overdose.
The available reporting establishes that both people were found during the same welfare check. It does not establish that they died at precisely the same time.

Who was Jesse Jane?
Born Cynthia Ann Howell on July 16, 1980, Jane was raised in part on military bases and later attended Moore High School in Oklahoma. She began her professional adult-film career in 2002 and became one of the most recognizable performers associated with the adult-entertainment industry during the 2000s and 2010s.
Her public career included work as an adult-film actress, model, host and columnist. She was also known professionally as an entertainer with a strong on-camera personality, rather than solely as a performer in feature productions.
Her Digital Playground career
Jane signed an exclusive contract with Digital Playground in 2002. The relationship became central to her rise within the industry, and the studio helped position her as one of the era’s most visible adult performers.
Her best-known screen work was the Pirates franchise. She played Jules in Pirates and returned for Pirates II: Stagnetti’s Revenge, released in 2008. The sequel was widely described as an unusually expensive adult production, with a reported budget of approximately $8 million. That figure is commonly repeated in industry coverage, but it should be treated as a reported production budget rather than an independently audited figure.

The films were significant because they presented adult entertainment through the scale and visual style of a feature production, with elaborate sets, costumes and action-oriented storytelling. Jane’s role in that franchise became one of the defining parts of her professional profile.
Television hosting and crossover appearances
Jane also worked outside feature adult films. She hosted programs connected with Playboy TV, including Night Calls and Naughty Amateur Home Videos. She appeared or received credits in mainstream entertainment projects including Starsky & Hutch and Entourage.
Those appearances expanded her visibility beyond the adult-film market, although they should not be overstated as a conventional Hollywood breakthrough. Jane’s primary professional identity remained that of an adult entertainer, while her hosting and crossover work reflected the broader media profile she developed during her peak years.
Awards and industry recognition
Jane was inducted into the AVN Hall of Fame. Her official biography also identifies her as a member of the XRCO and NightMoves halls of fame.

When did Jesse Jane retire?
Jane’s official biography says she retired from regular performing in 2017. It also records a final scene in 2019, meaning that “retirement” refers to her departure from regular work rather than an immediate end to every subsequent appearance or credit.
That distinction helps reconcile profiles that describe her active career as spanning the 2000s and 2010s with the later 2019 appearance.
Why Jesse Jane mattered to adult entertainment
Jane’s significance came from the combination of performance, hosting and recognizable branding. Her Digital Playground contract, leading role in the Pirates films, television work and industry honors made her one of the more visible adult performers of her generation.

The Pirates productions in particular represented an effort to give adult films the scale of mainstream genre entertainment. Jane was closely associated with that experiment and became a recognizable face of the period’s feature-oriented adult filmmaking.
A respectful account of her career should acknowledge the industry in which she worked without reducing her life to either sensationalism or the circumstances of her death.
