Eminem’s The Death of Slim Shady (Coup de Grâce) is a released album, not an upcoming project. His 12th studio album arrived on July 12, 2024 with 19 tracks and a central concept: Eminem confronts the Slim Shady alter ego that helped define his career. The album debuted at No. 1 in both the United States and the United Kingdom, but its critical reception was sharply divided.

This guide separates the confirmed release facts from the album’s more debatable narrative. It covers the standard and expanded tracklists, featured artists, major videos, the meaning of Slim Shady’s “death,” chart results, reviews and Grammy status.

Release details

The Death of Slim Shady (Coup de Grâce) is Eminem’s 12th studio album. Released on July 12, 2024 through Shady Records, Aftermath Entertainment and Interscope Records, it contains 19 tracks and runs for approximately 64 minutes and 28 seconds. The album is available through major streaming and digital music services, while official physical editions have been released subsequently.

The album’s official release information and standard tracklist are available through Eminem’s website and Shady Records.

Why is Slim Shady “dead”?

The title refers to Slim Shady, Eminem’s most controversial alter ego, rather than Eminem himself. The promotional campaign presented the persona’s death as a crime-story mystery, using a trailer, gravestone imagery, body bags and a fictional obituary published in the Detroit Free Press. The obituary was promotional fiction—not a report of Eminem’s death, retirement or permanent departure from music.

Artistically, the album places Marshall Mathers and Slim Shady in conflict. Slim represents the deliberately offensive, unpredictable voice associated with Eminem’s early career; Marshall is the artist, father and adult self confronting the consequences of that persona. The record dramatizes an attempted reckoning with Shady, but it does not prove that Eminem has permanently eliminated the character in real life. Official Eminem merchandise continued to use Slim Shady imagery after the album’s release, including the later Shady LPs collection.

Is it a concept album?

Yes—at least according to Eminem’s own description. Before release, he said the project was conceptual and instructed listeners to play it in order. That makes the sequencing important, even though the exact plot is not explained in a single official synopsis.

A cautious reading of the album’s arc looks like this:

  1. “Renaissance” and “Habits” reintroduce the old Slim Shady voice, with the aggression and shock humor associated with Eminem’s early work.
  2. “Trouble,” “Brand New Dance,” “Evil,” “Lucifer” and “Antichrist” continue the provocation while presenting Shady as a disruptive force that refuses to stay in the past.
  3. “All You Got (skit)” and “Breaking News (skit)” frame the album as a public spectacle surrounding Shady’s return.
  4. “Guilty Conscience 2” serves as the major confrontation between Marshall and Slim Shady, and is widely treated by critics as the narrative centerpiece.
  5. The closing run—especially “Temporary” and “Somebody Save Me”—moves toward family, regret, addiction and mortality, complicating the idea that the album is simply a victory over an alter ego.

Spoiler note: “Guilty Conscience 2” appears to deliver the album’s central showdown, but five tracks follow it. That structure leaves open several interpretations: the later songs may extend the story, revisit it from another perspective or function outside a literal timeline. Eminem confirmed the concept and the importance of track order; the precise mechanics of Slim Shady’s “death” remain interpretive.

Complete 19-track standard-edition tracklist

# Track Featured artist Why it matters
1 “Renaissance” — Reintroduces the album’s central persona and its old-school provocation.
2 “Habits” — Continues the conflict between Eminem’s present identity and Shady’s familiar impulses.
3 “Trouble” — A compact burst of confrontational Slim Shady energy.
4 “Brand New Dance” — Leans into the album’s deliberately provocative, comic side.
5 “Evil” — Pushes the darker characterization of Shady further.
6 “All You Got (skit)” — A transition point in the album’s staged narrative.
7 “Lucifer” — Extends the record’s imagery of temptation and destructive behavior.
8 “Antichrist” — One of the album’s most aggressive returns to Shady-era theatrics.
9 “Fuel” JID A technical rap showcase and one of the album’s most prominent collaborations.
10 “Road Rage” — Continues the album’s provocative commentary and combative tone.
11 “Houdini” — The first single and the key nostalgia-driven introduction to the project.
12 “Breaking News (skit)” — Reinforces the album’s media-spectacle framing.
13 “Guilty Conscience 2” — The central Marshall-versus-Shady confrontation.
14 “Head Honcho” Ez Mil A collaboration that broadens the album’s vocal palette after the apparent climax.
15 “Temporary” Skylar Grey A vulnerable message to Eminem’s daughter about love, loss and mortality.
16 “Bad One” — Returns to the tension between Eminem’s legacy and Shady’s destructive appeal.
17 “Tobey” Big Sean, BabyTron A Detroit-centered collaboration and the album’s second single.
18 “Guess Who’s Back (skit)” — Raises the possibility that Shady’s story is not as final as the title suggests.
19 “Somebody Save Me” Jelly Roll Closes with regret, addiction themes and the effect of Eminem’s past on his family.

The principal credited guest artists on the standard edition are JID, Ez Mil, Skylar Grey, Big Sean, BabyTron and Jelly Roll. Other contributors appear as additional vocalists, writers or producers. Dr. Dre, 50 Cent, Snoop Dogg and Pete Davidson, among others, appear in the “Houdini” video; they are not standard-album guest features.

The singles and most important videos

“Houdini”

Released on May 31, 2024, “Houdini” was the album’s first single and its clearest bridge between Eminem’s early-career imagery and the present day. The song is built around a sample or interpolation connected to Steve Miller Band’s “Abracadabra” and was produced by Eminem.

Its video imagines an older Slim Shady appearing in the modern world. Cameos include Dr. Dre, Pete Davidson, Snoop Dogg, 50 Cent, Jimmy Iovine, Royce da 5’9”, Paul Rosenberg, The Alchemist and Shane Gillis. The visual effects used generative-AI technology supervised by Metaphysic, helping the video stage a meeting between different versions of Eminem. “Houdini” reached No. 2 on the U.S. Billboard Hot 100. Eminem’s official announcement is available here.

“Tobey”

Released July 2, 2024, “Tobey” features Detroit artists Big Sean and BabyTron. It was the second single and arrived shortly before the album. The official video was directed by Cole Bennett in association with Lyrical Lemonade. Unlike “Houdini,” which is built around a broad legacy spectacle, “Tobey” emphasizes the chemistry and competitive energy of its three rappers. See Eminem’s official announcement for the release details.

“Somebody Save Me”

Featuring Jelly Roll, “Somebody Save Me” is among the album’s most emotionally direct songs. It addresses addiction, regret and the damage Eminem’s past could have caused his children. The official video, released August 21, 2024, gives the song a more serious autobiographical weight than the record’s comedic and confrontational opening stretch. It is one of the best entry points for understanding the album’s contrast between Slim Shady’s provocation and Marshall Mathers’ remorse. The video is documented on Eminem’s official site.

“Temporary”

“Temporary,” featuring Skylar Grey, is a message to Eminem’s daughter, Hailie Jade, imagined for a time when he is no longer there to speak to her. Its video, released in October 2024, also revealed that Eminem had become a grandfather. The song shifts the album away from the theatrical death of Slim Shady and toward the ordinary human fear of leaving family behind.

Expanded Mourner’s Edition: what was added?

The Expanded Mourner’s Edition was announced in September 2024. It contains the original 19 tracks plus four additional tracks, making 23 in total:

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  1. “Steve Berman (skit)”
  2. “Fuel (Shady Edition)” featuring Westside Boogie and Grip
  3. “Like My Shit”
  4. “Kyrie & Luka” featuring 2 Chainz

These are four additional tracks, not four entirely new songs in the narrow sense. The package includes a skit and a remix, while “Like My Shit” and “Kyrie & Luka” had previously circulated through limited Eminem-store digital configurations. The official store listing is the clearest reference for the 23-track version.

For a first listen, the 19-track standard edition best reflects the album’s original sequence. The expanded version is useful for collectors and listeners who want the additional material and alternate “Fuel” collaboration.

Chart performance

United States

The Death of Slim Shady debuted at No. 1 on the Billboard 200 for the week ending July 18, 2024, with 281,000 equivalent album units. That figure does not mean 281,000 traditional album copies sold. It combined approximately:

  • 164,500 streaming-equivalent album units;
  • 114,000 digital album sales; and
  • 2,500 track-equivalent album units.

The release also generated approximately 220.08 million official on-demand streams. Its first week was notable because a broadly available physical edition was not yet in place at launch. Eminem’s 2024 album became his 11th Billboard 200 No. 1—an achievement separate from its position as his 12th studio album. The U.S. figures are summarized in XXL’s report citing Billboard data.

United Kingdom

In the U.K., the album opened at No. 1 with 45,000 chart units. It was Eminem’s 11th U.K. No. 1 album, placing him level at that point with David Bowie and U2 for the number of albums that had topped the chart. The Official Charts report provides the opening-week context.

Critical reception: successful, skilled and divisive

The album’s commercial success did not translate into a consensus among critics. Metacritic lists a score of 46 out of 100 from 16 critic reviews, placing it in the “mixed or average” category. Individual scores ranged widely, from HipHopDX’s 26 to The Telegraph’s 80, with AllMusic at 30, Rolling Stone at 40, Pitchfork at 48, The Guardian and NME at 60, and Sputnikmusic at 74.

Favorable responses highlighted Eminem’s technical control, dense rhyme construction, flashes of the rhythmic energy associated with his early work, the JID collaboration on “Fuel” and the emotional contrast supplied by “Temporary” and “Somebody Save Me.” Supporters also saw ambition in making the alter ego—not simply a celebrity feud or autobiographical chapter—the album’s main subject.

Negative reviews focused on the repetition of older shock tactics, punchlines aimed at vulnerable or controversial subjects, the long runtime and the uncertainty around the tracks after “Guilty Conscience 2.” Some critics argued that the album tries to criticize Slim Shady while continuing to depend on the same provocations that made the persona commercially valuable.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

That tension is the most defensible way to summarize the reception: the album was commercially successful and technically ambitious, but strongly divisive over whether its concept produces meaningful self-criticism or mainly revives familiar Eminem formulas. Pitchfork’s review and Rolling Stone’s review illustrate the disagreement.

Grammy nominations

At the 2025 Grammy Awards, the album received nominations for Best Rap Album. “Houdini” was nominated for Best Rap Performance and Best Music Video. The album did not win Best Rap Album; Doechii won that category for Alligator Bites Never Heal. Accordingly, The Death of Slim Shady should be described as Grammy-nominated, not Grammy-winning. The nominations and results are listed by the Recording Academy.

Which edition should you hear?

Choose the 19-track standard edition if you want the album’s original conceptual sequence and the clearest first-time listening experience. Choose the 23-track Expanded Mourner’s Edition if you also want “Steve Berman (skit),” the “Fuel (Shady Edition)” remix, “Like My Shit” and “Kyrie & Luka.”
