Essential is enough to watch the movie; a SHOWTIME/Premium upgrade is not required. You can also rent or buy it digitally, or choose the 4K, Blu-ray, DVD, or SteelBook release. No free legal streaming option is currently listed.

Where to stream Star Trek: Section 31 in the U.S.
The simplest subscription option is Paramount+. Current U.S. availability data lists Star Trek: Section 31 on both Paramount+ Essential and Paramount+ Premium, so you do not need the more expensive plan just to watch this film. The movie is also listed through some partner services, including Paramount+ Amazon Channel, Paramount+ Roku Premium Channel, fuboTV, and YouTube TV. Check the title inside the service you already use before opening a new account; access through a partner may require a separate subscription or channel add-on.
Search for the exact title, Star Trek: Section 31. It is a feature-length movie, not a multi-episode series. Search results may otherwise mix the film with episodes or franchise guides about the Section 31 organization.
JustWatch’s U.S. listing is a useful way to confirm which services and retailers currently show the movie in your area, but the final price and playback options are controlled by each service.

How much does it cost?
The following is a U.S. price snapshot checked on August 10, 2026. Taxes, promotions, app-store billing, and retailer pricing may change the amount you pay.
| Option | Current U.S. price or status | Best for |
|---|---|---|
| Paramount+ Essential | $8.99 per month or $89.99 per year; ad-supported | Viewers who want the lowest-cost direct subscription and may watch other Paramount+ titles |
| Paramount+ Premium | $13.99 per month or $139.99 per year; generally ad-free on demand | Viewers who also want SHOWTIME, local live CBS, downloads, or eligible 4K/HDR playback |
| Digital rental | Generally about $3.99, with 4K listed where available | A one-time viewing |
| Digital purchase | Approximately $14.99–$19.99, depending on retailer and version | Keeping the movie in a digital library and watching it again without a subscription |
| Physical release | 4K UHD, SteelBook, Blu-ray, and DVD editions are available; prices vary | Collectors, bonus-feature fans, and viewers who want access independent of changing streaming rights |
For one viewing, a roughly $3.99 rental is usually the least expensive paid choice. If you expect to watch more Paramount+ content, Essential is the more practical subscription. Its annual price works out to about $7.50 per month when paid upfront, but an annual plan is less flexible if you only want this one movie.
Is Paramount+ Essential enough?
Yes. Current U.S. listings identify the movie on both Essential and Premium. Essential is the plan to choose if your goal is simply to stream Section 31 at the lowest direct Paramount+ price.
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
Premium may be worthwhile for reasons beyond this film. Paramount describes it as the higher tier with generally ad-free on-demand viewing, SHOWTIME, local live CBS, downloads, and 4K/HDR playback on selected titles. It is not necessary to upgrade solely for access to Section 31.
Do not treat the plan name as a universal guarantee of 4K playback. Paramount says 4K UHD, Dolby Vision, and HDR10 depend on the title, supported device, and internet connection. Partner-channel apps, browsers, televisions, and account-billing routes may show different format options.

Can you rent or buy the movie instead?
Yes. Paramount+ is the film’s subscription-streaming home, but that does not prevent a separate digital or physical home-entertainment release.
Digital rental
A digital rental is generally listed at about $3.99 in the U.S., with 4K available through some retailers. Current availability listings include Amazon Video, the Apple TV Store, and Fandango at Home. Google Play Movies, YouTube, or Plex may also display the film depending on the storefront and location.

Digital purchase
A digital purchase is currently listed at approximately $14.99–$19.99, depending on the retailer and version. This is the better choice if you expect to rewatch the movie or do not want to maintain a Paramount+ subscription. A purchase remains subject to the retailer’s account and service policies, so it is not identical to owning a physical disc.
Digital versions do not necessarily have identical technical features. For example, the U.S. Apple TV listing identifies English audio description, Dolby 5.1 audio, and English closed captions. Other retailers may offer different languages, captions, audio formats, or resolutions.

4K UHD, SteelBook, Blu-ray, and DVD
The physical and digital home-entertainment release arrived on April 29, 2025. The release includes 4K Ultra HD, 4K SteelBook, Blu-ray, DVD, and digital editions. The U.S. 4K and SteelBook editions include a digital copy redeemable through Fandango at Home.
The physical editions also include bonus material such as behind-the-scenes featurettes and a gag reel. That makes a disc the strongest option for collectors or viewers who want extras that may not be included with a basic stream. Availability and pricing can vary by retailer.
The 4K label still does not mean every setup will play the movie in 4K. Check the edition, television or monitor, player, app, and audio/video specifications before buying. A digital retailer may list a 4K version while a particular device or browser serves only HD.
Can you watch Star Trek: Section 31 for free?
There is currently no free legal streaming option listed in the U.S. A standard Prime Video, YouTube, Roku, or library account should not be assumed to include the movie. Prime Video may show it as a rental, purchase, or Paramount+ channel title, and those are separate payment paths.
Paramount+ or a partner service may occasionally offer a trial or promotional price. Paramount’s U.S. terms say trials may be offered to eligible new subscribers and that the duration is disclosed during signup. Do not rely on an old article promising a free trial; verify the offer, eligibility rules, renewal price, and cancellation deadline on the checkout screen.

Do you need to watch Star Trek: Discovery first?
No. The movie is designed to provide enough information for a newcomer to follow its immediate story. You do not need to complete Discovery or watch every previous Star Trek series before starting it.
Previous viewing does make the central character more meaningful. Michelle Yeoh plays Emperor Philippa Georgiou, a character introduced in Star Trek: Discovery. If you want preparation without committing to the entire franchise, use this progression:
- Minimum context: Discovery Season 1, which introduces Philippa Georgiou and her Mirror Universe counterpart.
- Best background: Discovery Seasons 1–2, because Season 2 provides substantial context about Section 31.
- Character-focused preparation: Continue into Georgiou’s Season 3 storyline, particularly the episodes surrounding Terra Firma.
- Optional Section 31 history: Deep Space Nine episodes Inquisition, Inter Arma Enim Silent Leges, and Extreme Measures. Section 31 also appears elsewhere in the franchise, including Enterprise, but those episodes are optional background rather than prerequisites.
StarTrek.com’s Section 31 guide provides a quick franchise refresher, while its guide to starting Discovery helps viewers who want the broader context. Watching the movie first is also a reasonable option if your priority is simply to see the film.

When did it premiere?
The streaming premiere was Friday, January 24, 2025, exclusively on Paramount+ in the United States and in international markets where Paramount+ operates. It did not begin as a conventional theatrical release. The later home-entertainment release on April 29, 2025, added digital purchase and rental options as well as physical editions.
When Paramount or other listings describe the film as a Paramount+ exclusive, read that as referring to its subscription-streaming home. It does not mean that the movie cannot also be rented, purchased, or released on disc.
International availability
Outside the United States, availability is country-specific. Paramount describes the film as streaming on Paramount+ in the United States and in international markets where the service operates, but that does not guarantee identical catalogs, prices, subtitles, retailer rights, 4K support, or release dates in every country.
Check the local Paramount+ catalog and use a country-specific availability tracker such as JustWatch. The official StarTrek.com Where to Watch page is another starting point, but local storefronts remain the authority for the price and format offered to your account. Do not assume that U.S. retailer names or U.S. dollar prices apply elsewhere.
What to do if the movie does not appear
- Confirm your country and billing region. Streaming rights and digital storefront listings differ by market.
- Search the exact title. Use Star Trek: Section 31, including the colon, and look under movies rather than series or episodes.
- Check which service you are using. A Paramount+ subscription purchased directly may have a different catalog interface from a Paramount+ channel accessed through Amazon or Roku.
- Verify the subscription or add-on. A regular Prime Video, Roku, fuboTV, or YouTube TV account does not automatically include every Paramount+ channel title.
- Open the retailer’s own title page. Search-engine results can show an old listing, a different country, or a purchase page when you intended to rent.
- Refresh the app. Update the streaming app, sign out and back in, restart the device, and search again. If the subscription is active but the film is still absent, contact the service that billed you.
- Check technical details before starting playback. Confirm whether your device offers 4K, HDR, audio description, subtitles, and closed captions in the version you selected.
Which viewing option should you choose?
- Watch once: Rent digitally for roughly $3.99.
- Watch more Paramount or Star Trek content: Choose Paramount+ Essential. It is sufficient for this movie.
- Want fewer on-demand ads or eligible 4K/HDR: Consider Premium, but only if its additional features matter to you and your equipment supports them.
- Keep it digitally: Buy the digital version for approximately $14.99–$19.99.
- Collect discs or want bonus features: Choose the 4K UHD, SteelBook, Blu-ray, or DVD edition.
- Already pay for a supported partner service: Search there first, while remembering that a Paramount+ channel add-on may still be required.
The Bottom Line
Bottom line: U.S. viewers who want the easiest subscription route can watch Star Trek: Section 31 on Paramount+ Essential; Premium is not required. For a single viewing, the roughly $3.99 digital rental is usually the cheaper choice. Digital purchase and 4K, Blu-ray, DVD, and SteelBook editions are available for viewers who want to keep the film, and no free legal stream is currently listed.
