The best Netflix movie released on the service in 2024 was The Remarkable Life of Ibelin, an extraordinary documentary about disability, online friendship, grief, and the hidden life of a gamer. For a more conventional crowd-pleaser, watch Hit Man; for action, choose Rebel Ridge; and for a tightly acted family drama, choose His Three Daughters.
This is a quality-first ranking of films Netflix released, acquired, or premiered on its U.S. service during 2024. It includes feature documentaries, international-language films, and Netflix acquisitions—not just Netflix-produced originals—and it is not a list of the year’s most-watched titles. Netflix availability is territorial and temporary, so check the linked title page or your local catalog before watching.

How this list defines a Netflix movie
The phrase Netflix movie can describe several different things. A film may be produced by Netflix, acquired after a festival or theatrical run, distributed exclusively by Netflix in a particular territory, or simply licensed for a limited period. Those categories are not interchangeable.
Quick wins for a faster PC:
Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →#1 Best Overall
For this list, a qualifying film received its principal Netflix streaming release in the United States during 2024. Netflix originals and Netflix acquisitions are both eligible. Older films that Netflix merely added to its catalog in 2024 are excluded unless their Netflix premiere was the relevant release event. A film does not have to remain in the Netflix catalog forever to qualify.
The ranking uses the Netflix streaming-release year rather than automatically using a festival or production year. That matters for titles such as Hit Man and His Three Daughters, both of which had earlier release-history milestones that can cause databases to display a different year. The article therefore gives the Netflix date first and treats a 2024 Netflix release as the controlling qualification.
Feature documentaries count as movies here, and so do international-language films. Animated films were eligible, although no animated title made this particular top ten. Availability, subtitles, dubs, age ratings, and audio-description options can vary by country and can change after publication.
How the ranking was decided
This is an editorial ranking, not a mathematical league table. A documentary about online community cannot be judged in exactly the same way as an Indonesian martial-arts film or a romantic crime comedy. The list weighs:
Recommended Free Tools
- Filmmaking quality: direction, writing, performances, editing, cinematography, sound, and production design.
- Critical response: Rotten Tomatoes consensus figures are useful context, but they do not represent artistic truth and are not equally stable when the number of reviews differs.
- Promise and delivery: whether a film fulfills the experience its premise advertises.
- Distinctiveness: whether it offers an idea, structure, performance, or point of view that the other films do not.
- Emotional or cultural impact: whether it leaves the viewer with memorable characters, questions, or images.
- Accessibility and rewatchability: whether a general viewer can easily understand the appeal, even when the subject is challenging.
- Genre range: the final list should not be ten interchangeable dramas or thrillers.
- Practical watchability: runtime, language, intensity, maturity rating, and content considerations.
That approach explains why a film with a 99% critic score is not automatically number one, and why an enormously popular title is not automatically among the best. For comparison, Netflix’s engagement reports define a view as total hours watched divided by runtime and cover approximately 99% of viewing on the service. Those figures measure reach, not artistic quality.
1. The Remarkable Life of Ibelin — best overall
Verdict: The most original and emotionally expansive Netflix film of 2024 turns a private life inside World of Warcraft into a moving account of friendship, disability, identity, and grief.
The Remarkable Life of Ibelin follows Mats Steen, a Norwegian gamer who lived with Duchenne muscular dystrophy. His parents believed his illness had left him isolated, but after his death, online friends contacted the family and revealed a much larger social world. The film reconstructs that world through family testimony, online correspondence, and animated sequences based on Steen’s life in the game.
Director Benjamin Ree avoids treating gaming as a novelty or a convenient symbol. Instead, the film asks what makes a relationship real, whether an online identity is less authentic than an offline one, and how badly families can misunderstand the inner lives of people they love. The animation is not decorative: it gives the audience access to the social and imaginative space that illness had made physically difficult for Steen to inhabit.
That combination of documentary evidence and reconstruction makes the film unusually cinematic. It is also why it earns the top position despite not having the broadest conventional appeal. The film expands from one young man’s story into a larger argument about community and the ways technology can make a life bigger rather than smaller.
- Director: Benjamin Ree
- Genre: Documentary, biography
- Runtime: 1h 44m
- Netflix release: October 25, 2024
- Maturity rating: PG-13
- Language: Multilingual, including Norwegian and English; check the Netflix title page for current subtitle and audio options
- Rotten Tomatoes snapshot: 97% critics, 95% audience
- Sources: Netflix title page and Rotten Tomatoes
Best for: Viewers who want a documentary with emotional force, an unusual subject, and ideas to discuss afterward.
Know before watching: The film deals with disability, serious illness, death, and grief. Its animated reconstructions may not appeal to viewers who prefer strictly observational documentaries.
Availability: It had a 2024 Netflix U.S. release. Netflix catalogs are changeable, so verify the live listing in your country.
2. Hit Man — best crowd-pleasing comedy
Verdict: Richard Linklater’s funniest Netflix release of the year is a stylish romantic crime comedy powered by Glen Powell’s ability to play several versions of the same man.
Powell plays Gary Johnson, a mild-mannered professor who assists the police by posing as a contract killer in sting operations. When a potential client hires him, Gary breaks the rules by helping rather than arresting her—and then falls for her. The fake hit-man persona becomes a doorway into a more confident identity, but also creates an increasingly complicated problem.
The premise gives Linklater and co-writer Powell room to mix screwball comedy, romance, crime plotting, and questions about performance. Powell changes Gary’s voice, posture, clothes, and attitude every time he adopts a new alias, making the film’s central joke visual as well as verbal. Adria Arjona provides an appealing romantic counterweight, while the film moves briskly enough to work as an easy group watch.
Hit Man is not trying to be a realistic account of police stings or contract killing. Its moral logic becomes more contrived as the plot advances, but that is part of the film’s breezy, knowingly fictional design. It is the safest recommendation on this list for someone who wants to have a good time rather than endure a heavy prestige drama.

Best for: Viewers who want romance, laughs, a charismatic lead, and enough crime mechanics to keep the story moving.
Rank #2
Know before watching: It is a highly fictionalized romantic comedy, not a grounded true-crime film. Expect adult language, sexual content, and violence.
Release-year note: Some databases identify the film with 2023 because of its earlier production or festival history. It qualifies here because its principal Netflix streaming release was in 2024.
3. Rebel Ridge — best action thriller
Verdict: A patient, intelligent action thriller that uses escalating suspense to examine police corruption, civil asset forfeiture, and institutional power.

Aaron Pierre plays Terry Richmond, a former Marine who arrives in a small town to post his cousin’s bail. Local law enforcement unjustly seizes his cash, leaving him trapped inside a system designed to protect itself. What begins as a practical problem gradually becomes a confrontation with the town’s police department and the legal machinery supporting it.
Director Jeremy Saulnier gives Pierre a role that makes restraint feel dangerous. Terry is physically capable, but the film does not rush to turn him into an unstoppable revenge machine. The tension comes from his effort to avoid unnecessary violence while the authorities repeatedly exploit procedure and intimidation. Pierre’s controlled performance gives the film its center, and the social issue is integrated into the thriller rather than pasted on as a final-message speech.
The reservation is also the film’s defining choice: Rebel Ridge is slower and less blood-soaked than many revenge movies. Its second half moves toward procedural and institutional conflict, so viewers expecting nonstop fights may find it deliberate. For anyone willing to let the pressure build, it is Netflix’s strongest conventional action film of the year.

- Rotten Tomatoes snapshot: 95% critics, 73% audience

4. His Three Daughters — best intimate drama
Verdict: A contained, performance-led family drama in which three estranged sisters turn the practical demands of a dying parent into a reckoning with old resentments.
Carrie Coon, Elizabeth Olsen, and Natasha Lyonne play sisters who gather when their father’s health declines. Each woman arrives with a different idea of duty, adulthood, and what the family owes her. Their disagreements are not merely about caregiving; they expose years of unequal responsibilities, incompatible coping mechanisms, and different memories of the same household.
Writer-director Azazel Jacobs builds tension from conversation rather than plot machinery. The film’s power depends on the three central performances, which give each sister a distinct rhythm and a defensible point of view. The arguments can be funny, cruel, evasive, or unexpectedly tender, often within the same scene.

The film is intentionally stage-like and enclosed. That is an advantage if you want acting and emotional realism, but a limitation if you want visual spectacle or rapid narrative movement. It is one of the most carefully observed dramas in the group and a particularly strong choice for viewers who appreciate films that let family conflict remain unresolved and messy.
- Director and writer: Azazel Jacobs
- Stars: Carrie Coon, Elizabeth Olsen, Natasha Lyonne
- Genre: Drama
- Runtime: 1h 41m
- Maturity rating: R
- Netflix streaming release: September 20, 2024
- Language: English; check Netflix for current audio and subtitle options
- Rotten Tomatoes snapshot: 97% critics, 82% audience
- Sources: Netflix Tudum and Rotten Tomatoes
Best for: Viewers who want exceptional acting, sharp dialogue, grief, and family drama.
Know before watching: It centers on terminal illness, impending death, and intense family conflict. Its conversational, contained structure may feel slow to viewers seeking a larger plot.
Release-year note: Festival histories and databases may call it a 2023 film because of its earlier life. This list treats it as a 2024 Netflix release.

Verdict: A warm road documentary about friendship and transition that is most effective when it observes two people learning how to occupy public space together.
Will Ferrell and his longtime friend Harper Steele take a 16-day drive across the United States after Steele comes out as a trans woman. The journey provides a simple structure: familiar places, strangers, conversations, awkward moments, and the gradual adjustment of a friendship to a major change.
Rank #3
The film’s strength is its accessibility. It does not attempt to define the entire trans experience through one person’s story; it documents this friendship, with all the advantages and limits that celebrity framing brings. Harper’s experience supplies the emotional center, while Ferrell’s willingness to appear uncertain gives the conversation an entry point for viewers who may be unfamiliar with the questions the film raises.
That celebrity protection is also the film’s principal limitation. Some encounters feel carefully staged, and the road-trip format cannot provide a complete account of trans life in America. Within its chosen boundaries, however, it is generous, engaging, and unusually easy to discuss after viewing.
- Director: Josh Greenbaum
- Subjects: Will Ferrell and Harper Steele
- Genre: Documentary
- Runtime: 1h 54m
- Maturity rating: R
- Netflix streaming release: 2024
- Language: English; check Netflix for current audio and subtitle options
- Rotten Tomatoes snapshot: 99% critics, 81% audience
- Source: Rotten Tomatoes
Best for: Viewers who want a heartfelt documentary about friendship, identity, travel, and difficult conversations.
Know before watching: The film is specifically one friendship’s road trip, not a definitive account of the trans experience. It includes discussions of discrimination, transition, and public hostility.
6. Woman of the Hour — best true-crime thriller
Verdict: Anna Kendrick’s directorial debut turns a notorious television appearance into an unsettling examination of charm, misogyny, media spectacle, and the ways women are ignored.
The film dramatizes serial killer Rodney Alcala’s appearance on the 1978 television program The Dating Game. Kendrick plays the show’s contestant, while Daniel Zovatto plays Alcala. The central horror is not simply that a killer appeared on television; it is that the social performance of charm could repeatedly overwhelm warning signs and women’s own perceptions.
Kendrick avoids making Alcala an entertaining antihero. The film’s attention stays on the women around him and on the cultural systems that discount their fear. Its structure is episodic, moving among the dating-show premise, the killer’s behavior, and the experiences of women who encounter him. That approach can feel uneven, but it prevents the story from becoming a straightforward serial-killer showcase.
Woman of the Hour is disturbing rather than pleasurable. It belongs on this list because its true-crime material is used to examine a broader social problem, not merely to sensationalize a real criminal.
- Director: Anna Kendrick
- Stars: Anna Kendrick, Daniel Zovatto, Tony Hale
- Genres: Crime, drama, mystery, thriller
- Runtime: 1h 29m
- Maturity rating: R
- Netflix streaming release: October 18, 2024
- Language: English; check Netflix for current audio and subtitle options
- Rotten Tomatoes snapshot: 91% critics, 68% audience
- Sources: Netflix Tudum and Rotten Tomatoes
Best for: Viewers interested in true crime, social commentary, media history, and psychological suspense.
Know before watching: Content includes serial murder, sexual violence, misogyny, threats, and disturbing encounters. The film deliberately avoids treating the killer as a glamorous figure.

Verdict: A brisk, highly watchable account of the January 1985 recording session that brought a remarkable group of music stars together to make “We Are the World.”
Director Bao Nguyen focuses on the practical and interpersonal problem at the heart of the event: how do you place dozens of major personalities in one studio and organize them around one recording? The film’s pleasure comes from watching that problem being solved through arrangements, personalities, technical decisions, jokes, nerves, and last-minute collaboration.
The documentary works as more than nostalgia. It is a behind-the-scenes film about production, leadership, compromise, and the strange logistics of collective creativity. Familiar performers become part of an ensemble, while the recording session supplies a natural clock and a clear dramatic goal.
Its celebratory approach is also its boundary. The film is more interested in the extraordinary night itself than in a comprehensive examination of every political, financial, or ethical dimension of the charity project. That makes it entertaining and accessible, though less comprehensive than a more critical historical documentary.
- Director: Bao Nguyen
- Genres: Documentary, music, history
- Runtime: 1h 36m
- Maturity rating: PG-13
- Netflix streaming release: January 29, 2024
- Language: English; check the Netflix title page for current audio and subtitle options
- Rotten Tomatoes snapshot: 98% critics, 89% audience
- Sources: Netflix and Rotten Tomatoes
Best for: Music fans, pop-culture viewers, and anyone who wants a fast-moving documentary with a clear behind-the-scenes hook.
Know before watching: It is celebratory rather than exhaustive. Some viewers may want more context about the charity project beyond the recording session.
8. The Shadow Strays — best international action film
Verdict: Timo Tjahjanto’s Indonesian action film is a long, brutally violent showcase for inventive fight choreography and unapologetic genre excess.
The story follows a young assassin who turns against her criminal organization to rescue a boy. That simple premise gives the film room for prolonged physical set pieces, shifting loyalties, and an increasingly intense collision between professional violence and personal attachment.
The film is at its best when it commits fully to movement, impact, and visual excess. Tjahjanto stages fights with a tactile sense of geography, allowing the viewer to understand where bodies are in relation to one another even as the action becomes extreme. It is not a restrained thriller or a compact martial-arts exercise; it is a long-form genre experience designed for viewers who want to be overwhelmed.
The trade-off is substantial. At 2 hours and 24 minutes, the film is longer than it needs to be, and its narrative is thinner than the films above it. Its extreme violence makes it a poor choice for a casual group watch, a family audience, or anyone looking for a generally accessible Netflix recommendation.
- Director: Timo Tjahjanto
- Original language: Indonesian; subtitles and possible dub options vary by region
- Genres: Action, crime, thriller, drama
- Runtime: 2h 24m
- Netflix streaming release: October 17, 2024
- Rotten Tomatoes snapshot: 91% critics, 78% audience
- Source: Rotten Tomatoes
Best for: Viewers who specifically want brutal Indonesian action, martial-arts choreography, and a maximalist genre film.
Know before watching: It contains extreme gore, prolonged violence, criminal brutality, and disturbing images. Check Netflix’s regional maturity label before viewing.
9. The Piano Lesson — best literary adaptation
Verdict: Malcolm Washington’s feature directing debut gives August Wilson’s Pulitzer Prize-winning play a strong ensemble and a serious visual treatment of inheritance, memory, slavery, and cultural legacy.
The story centers on a family heirloom piano carved by an enslaved ancestor. One family member wants to sell it to improve the family’s financial position; another believes the instrument embodies history that cannot be reduced to a price. The conflict turns property into a question about what descendants owe to the past.
Samuel L. Jackson, John David Washington, Danielle Deadwyler, and Ray Fisher lead an ensemble that understands the play’s language and competing moral claims. The film’s strongest scenes emerge when practical arguments about money and ownership open into questions of family memory, racial violence, and identity.
The adaptation retains some theatrical density. It can feel visually static or overextended next to the more kinetic films on this list, particularly for viewers unfamiliar with Wilson’s work. But the concentrated performances and the seriousness of the material make it a worthwhile choice for anyone who values literary adaptations and historical family drama.

10. It’s What’s Inside — best high-concept thriller
Verdict: A clever, divisive party movie turns a pre-wedding gathering into a puzzle about identity, jealousy, sex, resentment, and self-presentation.
A group of friends reunites before a wedding, but the gathering changes when a mysterious device allows them to exchange bodies. The premise immediately creates both comic and dramatic possibilities: people can inhabit one another’s appearances, but they cannot escape the secrets and resentments that define the group.
Recommended Free Tools
Writer-director Greg Jardin uses the body-swapping concept as a mechanism for revealing how the characters perform versions of themselves. The film is energetic, colorful, and built for viewers who enjoy trying to work out the rules while the social dynamics become increasingly hostile.
Its ambition is also its weakness. The structure is deliberately confusing, the characters are often unlikeable, and the loud style will divide viewers. The 80% critic snapshot is lower than the rest of the main list, but the film earns its place by offering a genuinely unusual experience that few other 2024 Netflix releases attempt.

Best for: Viewers who want a twisty, high-concept thriller to discuss with friends.

Important alternatives that narrowly missed
Laapataa Ladies — the strongest global alternative
Any broad discussion of the best Netflix films of 2024 should mention Kiran Rao’s Hindi-language comedy-drama. Two brides are accidentally separated and switched on the way to their new husbands’ homes, creating a story about mistaken identity, social expectations, and women finding agency inside a restrictive system.
Laapataa Ladies began streaming on Netflix on April 26, 2024, after an earlier theatrical and festival history. That release path explains why different databases may classify its year differently. It is a serious candidate for a global version of this list and could replace The Piano Lesson or It’s What’s Inside if international representation were given more weight.
See the Netflix title page, India Today’s release report, and the Associated Press context on its acclaim and awards.
Maharaja — for a darker international revenge story
This nonlinear Indian revenge thriller has a strong audience response and a disturbing premise, but its Rotten Tomatoes critic figure is based on only six reviews, making that percentage less stable than the main-list scores. It is best approached as a genre recommendation rather than a consensus critical pick.

The Beautiful Game — for an uplifting sports film
This warm sports drama is a good alternative when the viewer wants optimism rather than grief, violence, or psychological tension. Critics generally appreciated its heart while noting that it follows familiar sports-movie conventions. Its Rotten Tomatoes snapshot is 88% critics and 66% audience. See Rotten Tomatoes.
Carry-On — a major audience hit, not automatically a top-quality pick
Carry-On belongs in a popularity discussion. Netflix reported that it opened with 42 million views during the week of December 17, 2024, and described its reach across 93 countries. That makes it an important audience performer and a useful holiday crowd-pleaser, but viewership does not by itself establish that it is one of the ten best films of the year.
Netflix’s own first-half report also recorded 31 million views for Hit Man and 25 million for The Greatest Night in Pop. In the second half of the year, major engagement performers included Carry-On, That Christmas, Family Pack, Officer Black Belt, and Maharaja. See Netflix’s first-half engagement report, second-half report, and Carry-On report.

- Emilia Pérez: An audacious, unusual musical set in the world of Mexican cartels. It received major acclaim and an equally visible polarized response, so it is better described as ambitious and divisive than as an uncontested consensus favorite. See TheWrap’s coverage.
- Maria: A star-driven biographical drama with Angelina Jolie playing opera singer Maria Callas. The film prompted debate about historical accuracy and the unevenness of the opera performance.
- The Kitchen: A politically minded dystopian science-fiction film about near-future London, co-directed by Kibwe Tavares and Daniel Kaluuya. It had a 2023 festival history before arriving on Netflix in January 2024, making it a useful example of why Netflix release year and original premiere year should be separated.
- Ultraman: Rising: A notable animated option for viewers who want family-friendly superhero animation. Animated films were eligible for the main list, but this ranking prioritized the ten films above.
- Black Barbie: A documentary option for viewers interested in the history, representation, and cultural meaning of the Black Barbie doll.
- The Six Triple Eight: A historical war drama about the first and only Women’s Army Corps unit of color to serve overseas during World War II.

Why popularity and quality are separated
Netflix’s most-watched films often benefit from recognizable stars, holiday timing, broad premises, established franchises, or family accessibility. Those are valid reasons to recommend a movie, but they answer a different question from which films are best made or most distinctive.
Netflix’s engagement metric is particularly useful for understanding reach: the company calculates views by dividing total hours watched by runtime. A shorter film can therefore generate more views from the same number of hours than a longer film. Engagement reports are valuable audience data, but they are not reviews and should not be converted into a quality ranking.
That is why Carry-On, Damsel, Atlas, Our Little Secret, and holiday titles belong in a popularity or easy-watch sidebar rather than automatically displacing films such as His Three Daughters, Will & Harper, or The Piano Lesson.
Availability and release-year cautions
A Netflix release date is not a promise of permanent access. A title may be available in the United States but absent in another country, or it may leave one catalog while remaining in another. Netflix may also display different audio, subtitle, dub, and audio-description options by territory.
Before publishing or watching:
- Open the Netflix title page for the relevant country.
- Confirm that the film is still listed and note the local maturity rating.
- Check available subtitle, dubbing, and audio-description options.
- Do not describe a film as a Netflix original unless its production or distribution status has been verified.
- Use the Netflix streaming date as the main year for this article, while noting festival or theatrical dates where they create confusion.
- Remember that Rotten Tomatoes scores and audience percentages change as reviews and ratings are added.
The ranking and category labels above are editorial judgments. They are intended to help a reader choose the right film for a particular mood, not to suggest that one aggregate score can settle what counts as the best movie.
Frequently Asked Questions
What is the best Netflix movie of 2024?
The Remarkable Life of Ibelin is the best overall choice in this quality-first ranking. It combines documentary testimony, animated reconstructions, and an unusually moving story about disability, online friendship, identity, and grief. Choose Hit Man instead if you want the most accessible comedy, or Rebel Ridge if you want action.
Does this list include Netflix originals only?
No. It includes Netflix originals, acquisitions, and films that received their principal Netflix streaming release in the United States during 2024. It excludes older films that Netflix merely licensed in 2024 unless that Netflix premiere was the relevant release event.
Are documentaries included among the best Netflix movies?
Yes. Feature documentaries are eligible, and two documentaries made the top ten: The Remarkable Life of Ibelin and Will & Harper. The Greatest Night in Pop is also included as the year’s strongest music documentary pick.

Why is Carry-On not in the top ten?
Carry-On was one of Netflix’s biggest audience successes, but popularity and quality are different measures. It is recommended here as a holiday crowd-pleaser and major engagement hit, not automatically as one of the ten best-made or most distinctive films.
Why do some 2024 Netflix films have a different year in other databases?
Films can premiere at a festival, receive a limited theatrical release, and then arrive on Netflix in a later year. Hit Man, His Three Daughters, Laapataa Ladies, and The Kitchen all illustrate why this article uses the principal Netflix streaming date for eligibility.
Are these films available on Netflix everywhere?
No. Netflix catalogs are territory-specific and temporary. The list uses the U.S. 2024 streaming slate, but availability, subtitles, dubs, audio description, and maturity ratings may differ elsewhere. Check the Netflix title page in your country before watching.
The Bottom Line
Start with The Remarkable Life of Ibelin if you want the strongest overall film. Choose Hit Man for an entertaining date-night movie, Rebel Ridge for serious action, His Three Daughters for intimate drama, Will & Harper for a warm documentary, or Laapataa Ladies when you want the best global alternative. The list prioritizes filmmaking quality and lasting impact over raw Netflix view counts, and every title’s availability should be checked in the relevant local catalog.
