Netflix added the film to its U.S. catalog on July 14, 2026, according to the service’s official release guide.
Hulu and Peacock also have official pages or catalog listings for the movie, but current listings do not agree across platforms. If you already subscribe to either service, search for the title in its app before assuming it is included. This availability check was updated August 9, 2026.
The Hunger Games: The Ballad of Songbirds & Snakes is a Lionsgate film, not a Netflix original, so its streaming home can change. For U.S. viewers, however, Netflix is the clearest currently verified subscription option. The film can also be rented or purchased digitally through several video-on-demand retailers.
Where to watch The Ballad of Songbirds & Snakes now
| Viewing method | U.S. status as of August 9, 2026 | What to know |
|---|---|---|
| Netflix | Confirmed | Netflix’s official July 2026 release guide says the film arrived on July 14. It also appears in Netflix’s U.S. movie catalog. A Netflix subscription is required. |
| Hulu | Listed by Hulu; verify availability | Hulu’s official title page labels the movie “HULU (with ads).” A same-day JustWatch U.S. listing did not show Hulu, so check the title directly in the Hulu app before subscribing or changing plans. |
| Peacock | Listed by Peacock; verify availability | Peacock’s official pages include the film in its Hunger Games catalog, but the service warns that catalog availability can change. A current third-party listing did not show Peacock. |
| Digital rental | Available through participating retailers | Current U.S. listings identify Amazon Video, Apple TV Store, Fandango At Home, and Spectrum On Demand as rental or purchase outlets. Prices and formats can change. |
| Digital purchase | Available through participating retailers | A purchase gives you access through the retailer’s account and platform, but it is still subject to that retailer’s licensing and playback terms. |
| Free standalone streaming | No confirmed option | The current U.S. JustWatch check does not identify a legal free streaming service. An ad-supported subscription is not the same as a free stream. |
Check Netflix’s official release guide, the Netflix U.S. catalog, and the services’ own apps for the most reliable result. The U.S. JustWatch listing is useful for comparing rental and purchase outlets, but streaming licenses can change faster than search results.

Netflix is the current answer—but not necessarily a permanent one
Netflix’s July 14, 2026 arrival announcement confirms when the movie entered the U.S. catalog; it does not announce how long the license will last. There is also no basis for calling Netflix the film’s permanent or exclusive home. Because this is a Lionsgate release, it may move between services as distribution agreements change.
Hulu’s and Peacock’s official pages deserve mention because they currently list the title, but the disagreement with the same-day third-party availability check makes them less certain than Netflix. If you already pay for Hulu or Peacock, use the service’s in-app search and confirm that playback begins before relying on that option.
The complete U.S. release timeline
The film had several different “release” dates, which explains why older articles can appear to contradict the current answer. Digital availability, subscription streaming, and theatrical release are separate windows.

- November 17, 2023: The film opened in U.S. theaters.
- December 19, 2023: It became available for digital rental and purchase. This was a premium video-on-demand and electronic-sell-through release—not subscription streaming.
- May 14, 2024, at 9 p.m. Eastern: It made its announced first U.S. subscription-streaming debut on STARZ. This is a historical release date, not a statement that STARZ is the only or current streaming home.
- July 14, 2026: The film was added to Netflix in the United States.
The early digital release allowed viewers to rent or buy the movie months before it reached a subscription service. That distinction matters when reading older coverage that says the movie was “available to stream” in December 2023: at that point, “stream” generally meant on-demand digital rental or purchase, not inclusion with a subscription.

Can you watch it without adding a streaming subscription?
Yes, but the non-subscription options are paid rentals or purchases. Current U.S. listings include:
- Amazon Video
- Apple TV Store
- Fandango At Home
- Spectrum On Demand for rental
Retailer prices, video resolution, subtitles, audio options, and availability can change. Historical reporting listed a launch price of $24.99 to buy and $19.99 to rent in December 2023, but those were original-release prices and should not be treated as current.

- Up to 4K HDR with Dolby Vision delivers captivating, true-to-life detail[4]; and you can connect speakers that support Dolby Atmos for more immersive 3D sound
If you only plan to watch once, a rental may cost less than starting another monthly subscription. If you expect to watch repeatedly, compare the current purchase price with the cost of one month of a service you already use. A digital purchase is not identical to owning a disc: access remains connected to the retailer account and its platform rules.
For the most dependable long-term access, physical media avoids dependence on a rotating streaming license, although you would need a compatible DVD, Blu-ray, or 4K player and a disc release appropriate for your region.

The Ballad of Songbirds & Snakes is a prequel set decades before Katniss Everdeen’s story. It follows a young Coriolanus Snow as he mentors Lucy Gray Baird, a tribute from District 12, during the 10th Hunger Games. The film examines the early development of the Games and Snow’s rise within Panem without requiring viewers to follow Katniss’s original storyline first.

Francis Lawrence directed the film. The principal cast includes Tom Blyth as Coriolanus Snow, Rachel Zegler as Lucy Gray Baird, Peter Dinklage, Viola Davis, Hunter Schafer, Jason Schwartzman, and Josh Andrés Rivera. Listings describe the movie as PG-13 with a runtime of approximately 157 minutes.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Do you need to watch the other Hunger Games movies first?
No. The movie is designed as a prequel and can be watched on its own. Watching it before the four films centered on Katniss gives you the story in chronological order and provides background on Panem, the Hunger Games, and Snow. Watching the original films first preserves the franchise’s release-order perspective and may make some historical connections more meaningful.
For viewers preparing for The Hunger Games: Sunrise on the Reaping, this film offers additional Panem background, but the two movies are separate stories. Sunrise on the Reaping is based on Suzanne Collins’s later novel and is scheduled for release in North American theaters on November 20, 2026; it is not a direct sequel to Songbirds & Snakes.

Does streaming availability vary outside the United States?
Yes. The services listed above are U.S. options unless specifically identified otherwise. Licensing is country-specific, so Netflix availability in the United States does not mean the film is on Netflix everywhere.
As checked August 9, 2026, the United Kingdom listing showed rental and purchase options but no subscription-streaming service. The Australian listing showed Netflix and Stan. Those results can change, so viewers outside the U.S. should search their local version of each service or use a country-specific availability guide. A VPN does not change the underlying regional licensing rights.
Why older “where to watch” articles may be wrong
- Articles from late 2023 may say that a subscription-streaming date had not yet been announced. That was accurate then, but it is no longer current.
- The December 19, 2023 digital release is often confused with subscription streaming.
- STARZ was the announced first subscription-streaming home in May 2024, but that does not make it the movie’s permanent streaming service.
- Predictions about future Peacock, Roku Channel, or other platform windows should not be treated as current availability without a live platform listing.
- A service page can remain indexed after a licensing window changes, while third-party trackers can lag behind a platform or omit availability through a bundle.
- “Free with ads” and “included with an ad-supported subscription” are different: the latter still requires a paid subscription.
The Bottom Line
Bottom line: U.S. viewers can currently watch The Hunger Games: The Ballad of Songbirds & Snakes through Netflix, which added it on July 14, 2026. Hulu and Peacock list the movie but should be checked directly in their apps. If you do not want another subscription, rent or buy it through a digital retailer; no confirmed free standalone U.S. stream is currently listed.
