Homestead (2024) is a genuine theatrical feature film, but it was deliberately made as the opening chapter of a larger movie-and-series franchise. Directed by Ben Smallbone and released by Angel Studios, the post-apocalyptic survival drama follows a former Green Beret and his family as they seek shelter inside a fortified Utah compound after a nuclear detonation near Los Angeles plunges the United States into chaos.

The film runs for approximately 110 minutes and has a substantial story of its own. However, it does not provide a fully self-contained conclusion: its final act opens the gates to the continuing conflict explored in Homestead: The Series. As of August 9, 2026, the movie and all eight episodes of Season 1 are available through Angel, with the current official FAQ specifying Angel Guild member access. A second season has been greenlit, but no confirmed release date has been announced in the reviewed official materials.

The runtime varies slightly by listing. Angel’s press room gives 1 hour 50 minutes, the current movie page gives 1 hour 51 minutes, Rotten Tomatoes gives 1 hour 52 minutes, and the physical-media listing gives 110 minutes. For that reason, about 110 minutes is the most accurate general description.

Is Homestead a movie or a TV show?

It is both a theatrical movie and the first installment in a connected television franchise. Homestead was released in cinemas on December 20, 2024, rather than debuting as a television episode or streaming pilot. At the same time, Angel Studios developed the feature and the series together, with the series intended to continue the story directly after the movie.

The distinction matters because Homestead is a feature film but not a fully self-contained narrative. It establishes the compound, introduces the principal families and leadership disputes, and resolves one immediate question about who will be allowed inside. It leaves the wider political, military, and interpersonal crisis open for the series.

Angel’s official movie information and FAQ identify the series as a direct continuation and recommend watching the movie first. The simplest way to approach the project is to think of the film as a theatrical, feature-length opening chapter rather than as a conventional one-and-done survival movie.

What is Homestead (2024) about?

The story begins when a nuclear weapon detonates near Los Angeles. Communications and infrastructure fail, panic spreads, and the United States begins to fragment. Former Green Beret Jeff Eriksson takes his family to the Homestead, a heavily fortified mountain compound in Utah.

The property belongs to Ian Ross, a wealthy prepper who has spent years gathering supplies and building a place intended to withstand social collapse. The compound has food, security systems, energy resources, and enough space to offer its residents a chance at survival. It also has limited capacity, competing chains of authority, and residents who do not agree about what survival should mean.

Jeff believes the Homestead must operate as a disciplined fortress. His priority is security: access must be controlled, threats must be anticipated, and hard decisions must be made before outside pressure reaches the compound. Ian, whose wealth created much of the facility, wants his resources to preserve a functioning social order. His wife, Jenna Ross, takes a different moral position. She argues that a refuge cannot claim to protect human life while refusing every desperate person outside its gates.

That produces the film’s central conflict. The question is not merely whether the Homestead can repel an attack. It is whether the compound should be an ark that preserves life by accepting people or a fortress that survives by keeping everyone else out.

The story therefore brings together several opposing ideas:

  • Preparedness versus hospitality.
  • Private property versus communal obligation.
  • Military command versus civilian leadership.
  • Government authority versus local autonomy.
  • Self-preservation versus Christian charity.

Angel’s official synopsis emphasizes both the external danger and what it calls the dangers of human nature. Critics have also focused on the film’s argument about private wealth, prepper culture, government power, and faith-based responsibility. The movie is clearly faith-forward, but its central debate is broader than a simple conflict between guns and religion. It asks who gets protected, who gets excluded, and whether a community can remain morally defensible while treating outsiders as a threat.

Cast and characters

The movie’s main dramatic triangle is formed by Jeff, Ian, and Jenna. Jeff supplies military experience and a security-first approach; Ian represents the wealth and infrastructure behind the compound; and Jenna challenges the assumption that survival justifies unlimited exclusion.

Actor Character Role in the story
Bailey Chase Jeff Eriksson A former Green Beret who becomes the Homestead’s head of security
Neal McDonough Ian Ross The wealthy owner of the compound
Dawn Olivieri Jenna Ross Ian’s wife and a leading advocate for compassion and communal responsibility
Kearran Giovanni Tara Eriksson Jeff’s wife
Susan Misner Evie McNulty A resident of the Homestead community
Olivia Sanabia Claire Ross A member of the Ross family
Tyler Lofton Abe Eriksson A member of Jeff’s family
Currie Graham Blake Masterson A figure involved in the compound’s leadership and security tensions
Kevin Lawson Tick A member of the wider survival group
Jesse Hutch Evan Lee A member of the Homestead’s surrounding conflict
Ariel Llinas Lieutenant Javi Espada A military-linked figure
Emmanuel McCord Bing A member of the community

The current Angel movie page is the most useful first-party source for the film’s cast and character information. Viewers should not confuse the movie’s ensemble with later additions to the series, which include Charles Esten, Jill Wagner, and Sam Page.

Is Homestead based on a book or a true story?

Homestead is based on the Black Autumn post-apocalyptic fiction series by Jeff Kirkham and Jason Ross. It is not a documentary, a dramatization of a real survival account, or a true-story film.

The first book, Black Autumn: A Post-Apocalyptic Saga, begins with a rogue nation detonating a small nuclear weapon near Los Angeles. It follows military veterans, their families, and a survival compound as American society breaks down. That premise provides the screen project’s disaster setting and survivalist framework.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Official materials describe the movie and series as being based on the book series, but that does not establish that the film is a scene-by-scene or completely faithful adaptation. The books have a broader military and survival-thriller scope, while the movie concentrates more heavily on the Eriksson and Ross families and the moral choices facing the Homestead. The books and screen version are best treated as related continuities unless the filmmakers specify how closely particular events were adapted.

The ending of Homestead explained (spoilers)

Warning: the following section reveals the movie’s major plot developments and ending.

As the film progresses, the Homestead’s food, security, and leadership problems become more serious. Jeff becomes increasingly convinced that forces outside the compound will eventually attack, while disputes with Ian, Blake Masterson, and government-linked figures make the internal chain of command unstable.

The immediate crisis escalates when a group presenting itself as a SWAT or police force becomes involved. The confrontation turns violent and leads to gunfire. Ian is seriously wounded, making the struggle over leadership and the Homestead’s future even more urgent.

Jenna ultimately rejects the idea that the compound can remain morally secure by simply refusing everyone outside its gates. She opens the gates to refugees. This is the movie’s most important decision: the Homestead stops being exclusively a protected private enclave and begins taking responsibility for a larger population.

The decision is not presented as a simple solution. More people create new risks, consume scarce resources, and bring different skills, loyalties, and conflicts into the compound. At the same time, the newcomers help support the Homestead’s food production, energy systems, and other survival infrastructure. The film’s argument is that a community may become more capable through cooperation, even when cooperation makes it more vulnerable.

The movie closes by previewing further internal conflict and violence through Gracie’s visions. Rather than resolving the larger crisis, the final sequence signals that the Homestead’s most difficult tests are still ahead.

There is also a post-film appeal and QR-code promotion directing viewers toward the continuing franchise. That material reinforces the intended movie-to-series structure, but it also contributed to the impression among some theatrical viewers that the film had turned into a trailer for its next installment.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

What does the ending actually resolve?

The film resolves one immediate moral question: the Homestead will not remain permanently closed to outsiders. Jenna’s decision establishes a new direction for the community and allows the refugees’ skills and labor to become part of its survival strategy.

It does not resolve who should lead, how the Homestead will defend itself, whether the government-linked forces can be trusted, or whether the enlarged community can survive its own divisions. Those unresolved questions are the bridge into Homestead: The Series.

Why does the movie feel unfinished?

The incomplete feeling is intentional, but that does not mean every viewer will find it satisfying. Angel announced the project as a feature film followed by a television series, rather than as a completely independent movie that was later extended because of its success. The theatrical film was designed to establish the world and hand the story to the series.

That format offers an obvious benefit: the filmmakers can introduce a large ensemble, a detailed compound, and several long-running conflicts without forcing every storyline into a single conclusion. It also creates a significant cost. A viewer who buys a cinema ticket generally expects a film with a complete dramatic arc, even if the characters’ lives continue afterward.

Critics, including TheWrap, objected that the climax feels more like a series launch than a movie ending. The criticism was intensified by the QR-code and pay-it-forward messaging: some reviewers felt that the film’s appeal for support undercut its emphasis on charity by asking audiences for more financial participation in the franchise.

That criticism should be distinguished from the filmmakers’ stated model. Angel’s promotional materials confirm that the film and series were conceived as connected parts of one project. The issue is therefore not whether the open ending was accidental; it is whether viewers consider that franchise structure fair or effective in a theatrical feature.

Older articles may say that the movie is generally free to stream on Angel or available to anyone with a standard account. Those descriptions may reflect an earlier access model. The current official FAQ specifically refers to Angel Guild members, so it is inaccurate to promise free, universal streaming access without checking the latest regional terms.

How many episodes are in Homestead: The Series?

Season 1 contains eight episodes. The first two episodes were released alongside the movie in December 2024. Production and release of the remaining six episodes were delayed; those episodes were then released weekly from November 26 through December 25, 2025.

  1. The Wolves Circle
  2. The Serpent Strikes
  3. No Straight Path
  4. That Which Death Carves Away
  5. Catch a Falling Knife
  6. Evil Has a Certain Smell
  7. Fighting for The Cross
  8. Maybe That’s What It Took. Maybe It Was Worth It.

Consequently, older coverage saying that only two episodes were available is out of date. The official episode listing and Angel’s release announcement now identify Season 1 as complete.

Reviews and critical reception

Homestead has a clear divide between critics and audiences. As of August 9, 2026, Rotten Tomatoes listed the film at 43% on the Tomatometer from 21 critic reviews and 71% on the Popcornmeter from more than 1,000 verified audience ratings. Scores can change as additional ratings are added, but the gap illustrates the film’s uneven reception.

The Rotten Tomatoes consensus describes an earnest film weakened by moralizing, an underdeveloped story, and inconsistent execution. A separate critic summary listed the movie at 44 on Metacritic based on five critic reviews, with reactions ranging from appreciation for the cast and production value to the view that the film functions primarily as an extended pilot.

What critics liked

  • Bailey Chase and Neal McDonough: both provide the strongest performances and give the leadership conflict emotional weight.
  • The central ethical debate: the question of whether security justifies exclusion is more substantial than a straightforward action-survival premise.
  • Production value: the movie is more polished than many low-budget faith-based thrillers.
  • Unusual genre combination: it mixes Christian themes, prepper culture, military survival drama, family melodrama, and post-apocalyptic thriller conventions.

What critics disliked

  • The movie introduces many characters and conflicts without fully developing them.
  • The narrative often feels like setup for the series rather than a complete feature-film arc.
  • Some viewers objected to its distrust of government, emphasis on private preparedness, and simplified political conflicts.
  • The closing franchise appeal can feel like a bait-and-switch to viewers who expected a conventional theatrical ending.
  • The tone shifts between serious disaster thriller, faith-based parable, family drama, and survivalist fantasy.

Descriptions such as Christian propaganda or right-wing propaganda should not be presented as neutral facts. They are interpretations expressed by some critics and viewers. A more precise description is that the film is faith-forward and explores preparedness, private property, government authority, charity, and community responsibility from a perspective shaped by Christian themes. Audiences may agree or disagree with that perspective, but the film’s argument is more complicated than a single political label suggests.

Box office and the Angel Studios business model

Homestead opened in 1,886 theaters. Angel Studios projected an opening weekend of approximately $6.07 million. Box Office Mojo lists the domestic opening at $6,000,241 and the final grosses as follows:

Market Reported gross
Domestic $20,811,864
International $3,520
Worldwide $20,815,384

The small difference between Angel’s opening estimate and Box Office Mojo’s reported opening total is normal: one is a company projection or estimate, while the other is a later reported figure.

Angel also said when the project was announced that it had raised more than $1.25 million from nearly 3,000 investors and that the underlying books had sold more than 750,000 copies. Those are historical company claims and should be understood as attributed promotional figures, not independently audited totals.

Production credits and adaptation details

Homestead was directed by Ben Smallbone and produced through the Angel Studios ecosystem. Angel’s materials name Angel Studios, 10ton, Skies Fall Entertainment, 2521, and Radiate Pictures among the production companies associated with the project. The original announcement identified Jason Ross and Ben Kasica as showrunners for the series.

Some credits vary between databases and Angel’s current metadata. The current Angel movie page lists Phillip Abraham, Leah Bateman, Ben Kasica, Jason Ross, and Joseph Snyder as writers. Rotten Tomatoes lists a shorter screenwriting credit, and older databases may separate writing, story, and source-material credits differently.

Producer information also differs: Angel’s current movie page names Catie Bellinger, while the earlier announcement identifies Ben Kasica and Andrea Royer as producers. These differences may reflect distinct credit categories or later metadata updates. Anyone requiring a definitive production-credit list should verify the film’s on-screen end credits rather than combining the listings into one unqualified claim.

Is Homestead suitable for teenagers and family viewing?

The film is rated PG-13 for some violence and thematic elements. It is family-oriented in its emphasis on faith, relationships, responsibility, and community, but it is not a young-children’s movie.

Parents and guardians should expect:

  • Gun violence, shootings, and armed confrontations.
  • Deaths, serious injury, and sustained threat.
  • A nuclear detonation and imagery of societal collapse.
  • Disaster, refugee, and survival themes.
  • Religious and explicitly faith-based discussion.
  • Limited language.
  • Minor romantic content.
  • Prescription-pill use and references to alcohol or homemade peach wine.

Mature teenagers who are comfortable with firearms, disaster scenarios, and religious themes may be appropriate viewers. Parents should not rely solely on the family-friendly or inspirational marketing when deciding whether younger viewers should watch.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Who is most likely to enjoy it?

Homestead is a reasonable choice for viewers who enjoy post-apocalyptic survival stories, prepper compounds, tactical or military protagonists, faith-based dramas, and ensemble stories that continue into television. Its most interesting material comes from the debate over what a community owes to people who were not prepared for the collapse.

It may frustrate viewers who want a tightly focused cast, realistic nuclear-disaster logistics, minimal religious messaging, a morally neutral survival thriller, or a definitive resolution within one movie. Its unusual structure is both its selling point and its main weakness:

The format offers The format costs
Room to establish a large world and ensemble Several characters and conflicts remain underdeveloped
A direct path into an eight-episode continuation The theatrical film does not fully conclude its larger story
Long-form exploration of faith, security, and community Viewers expecting a complete movie may feel they paid for a franchise opener

Bottom line

Homestead is best approached as a faith-forward post-apocalyptic franchise opener, not as a conventional one-and-done survival film. It has a real theatrical release, a feature-length runtime, a capable central cast, and a substantial ethical conflict between preparedness and charity. But its ending intentionally hands the story to Homestead: The Series.

If you enjoy prepper fiction, military survival dramas, Christian themes, and continuing ensemble narratives, the movie provides a useful foundation for the completed first season. If you expect a self-contained theatrical conclusion, its open ending, series preview, and post-film appeal may be more frustrating than satisfying.
