Kingdom of the Planet of the Apes arrived with an awkward assignment: continue one of modern science fiction’s most acclaimed trilogies while moving the story far beyond Caesar’s lifetime. The first reviews suggest that Wes Ball’s film succeeds as a visual and world-building achievement, even if it does not match the emotional force of Dawn or War for the Planet of the Apes.

The early critical response was favorable but measured. Reviewers found an expansive ape civilization, exceptional Wētā FX effects, strong action, and promising new characters. They also pointed to a long runtime, uneven pacing, less-developed human material, and a final act that sometimes feels more conventional than the ideas leading up to it.

A new era after Caesar

Set several generations after Caesar’s reign, Kingdom of the Planet of the Apes shifts the franchise’s center of gravity. Humans have been reduced to scattered, largely hidden communities, while apes have developed their own societies, belief systems, political structures, and competing interpretations of the past.

Owen Teague plays Noa, a young ape whose life is overturned when a tyrannical leader threatens his clan. His journey brings him into contact with Raka, a thoughtful orangutan played by Peter Macon, and Mae, a human survivor portrayed by Freya Allan. Kevin Durand plays Proximus Caesar, an ape ruler who uses Caesar’s name and legacy to support his own ambitions.

  • Generations in the future following Caesar?s reign, apes are living harmoniously as the dominant species ? and humans are living in the shadows. As a new tyrannical ape leader builds his empire, one young ape undertakes a harrowing journey that will cause him to question the past and make choices that will define a future for apes and humans alike.

That setup gives the film a different dramatic problem from the earlier movies. The previous trilogy followed Caesar as he tried to protect his people while navigating conflict with humans. Kingdom asks what happens when Caesar has become history—and when history can be edited, simplified, or exploited by people who never knew him.

What the first reviews praised

Visual effects that carry emotional weight

The most consistent praise concerns the film’s visual effects and motion-capture performances. Reviewers highlighted the detail in the apes’ fur, eyes, facial movements, and body language. Close-ups are not merely technical demonstrations; they allow characters to communicate fear, suspicion, grief, and conviction without relying on dialogue.

The work from Wētā FX was repeatedly compared favorably with the visual standard established by Avatar: The Way of Water. The ruined human world is equally important: abandoned infrastructure, overgrown buildings, and enormous natural spaces make the setting feel like a civilization that has been reclaimed rather than simply destroyed.

A wider ape society

Critics responded well to the decision to show apes as the dominant society. The film is interested in ordinary ape life, not only in battles between apes and humans. Different groups have different customs, levels of knowledge, and relationships with the memory of Caesar.

This expanded perspective gives the franchise room to explore how legends change. Caesar’s teachings can become a source of genuine moral guidance, a distorted religion, or a convenient political slogan. That tension supplies much of the movie’s thematic interest.

Action with character behind it

The action sequences were generally described as tense and clearly staged rather than empty spectacle. The best set pieces are connected to Noa’s relationships and to the survival of his community, so the physical danger has a recognizable emotional cost.

The film is also willing to make its apes physically vulnerable. They are not presented as invincible superheroes; their environments, weapons, traps, and political divisions all create danger. That keeps the action grounded even when the scale becomes enormous.

A strong central cast

Owen Teague’s performance gives Noa a convincing progression from a relatively sheltered young ape to someone forced to make political and moral choices. Peter Macon’s Raka provides warmth and intellectual curiosity, while Kevin Durand makes Proximus charismatic enough to be more than a straightforward villain.

Freya Allan’s Mae is an important counterpoint to the ape characters. She is vulnerable in a world where humans no longer control events, but she is also capable of shaping them. Several reviewers saw potential in the character while also arguing that the film withholds too much of her background and motivation.

Where the film falls short

It is not as emotionally powerful as the previous trilogy

The biggest reservation in the early reviews was comparative. Kingdom is often described as a good or very good continuation, but not as affecting as Dawn of the Planet of the Apes or War for the Planet of the Apes.

As a new tyrannical ape leader builds his empire, one young ape undertakes a harrowing journey that will cause him to question the past and make choices that will define a future for apes and humans alike.

That distinction matters because the earlier films built their stories around an unusually intimate connection with Caesar. Kingdom is beginning a new chapter with a new protagonist, so its emotional investment is necessarily less established. Noa is compelling, but the film is also busy introducing a new political landscape and preparing future conflicts.

The 145-minute runtime can be felt

At 2 hours and 25 minutes, the movie has enough space for substantial world-building, but some reviewers felt that its momentum weakens in the middle. The slower sections are not without purpose, yet the story can feel as though it is pausing to explain the franchise’s new status quo.

This is a film about transitions: from Caesar to his successors, from human dominance to ape dominance, and from one trilogy to another phase of the series. That setup is useful, but it occasionally makes Kingdom feel more like the opening volume of a larger story than a completely self-contained dramatic arc.

The human storyline is less developed

The ape characters receive the richest writing and the strongest performances. Mae’s storyline raises intriguing questions about humanity’s future and its remaining knowledge, but some reviewers felt that the film deliberately saves crucial information about her for a sequel.

That choice creates mystery, but it can also make Mae seem less fully realized than Noa, Raka, or Proximus. The imbalance is especially noticeable because the earlier films gave their human characters substantial emotional and political importance.

A conventional final act

The film’s ideas about power, historical memory, and the invention of tradition are more unusual than its climax. Several reviews argued that the conclusion moves away from those quieter tensions and toward familiar large-scale franchise action.

The ending is still designed to provide spectacle and forward momentum, but it also makes the sequel machinery visible. Some critics found that prospect exciting; others felt the movie would have been stronger if it had trusted its political and philosophical material for longer.

What the critics’ scores indicate

Source Score reported What it suggests
Rotten Tomatoes 80% from 330 critics Broadly positive reception, with reservations about its place in the franchise
Rotten Tomatoes audience score 77% from more than 2,500 verified ratings Positive audience response, though not an overwhelming consensus
Metacritic 66/100 from 57 critics Generally favorable reviews with clear criticism of pacing and emotional depth

The numbers support a specific conclusion: this is not a critical failure or a routine franchise extension, but neither is it being treated as the series’ new high point. The strongest consensus centers on craft, spectacle, and potential. The main disagreement concerns how completely the film works as a finished story.

Can newcomers follow it?

Several reviewers said that prior knowledge is helpful but not essential. The film provides enough information about Caesar, the collapse of human power, and the changing relationship between humans and apes for new viewers to understand the central conflict.

Watching the earlier trilogy adds context, particularly for the way Caesar’s name is used by later generations. It also makes the film’s historical references and thematic reversals more meaningful. Still, Kingdom is structured as a new starting point rather than a direct continuation of Caesar’s personal story.

The early verdict

The fairest description of Kingdom of the Planet of the Apes is a visually exceptional reset with a strong foundation for future films. It successfully makes the ape world feel larger, older, and more politically complicated. Its motion-capture work is remarkable, its action has clear stakes, and its central characters offer enough potential to sustain another chapter.

Its limitations are equally clear. The film is long, its human perspective is comparatively thin, and its final movement is less distinctive than its central ideas. It does not recreate the emotional intensity of the previous trilogy, but it does avoid simply repeating it.

That makes the “triumph” label accurate only with qualification. Kingdom is a triumph of visual craft and franchise reconstruction—not necessarily a triumph on the level of the best films that came before it.

FAQ

Is Kingdom of the Planet of the Apes receiving good reviews?

Yes. The early critical response was broadly positive, with praise for the visual effects, motion-capture performances, action, and expanded ape society. The main criticism is that it does not reach the emotional heights of the previous trilogy.

Does Kingdom of the Planet of the Apes continue Caesar’s story?

It takes place several generations after Caesar’s reign, so Caesar is part of the film’s history rather than its main character. His legacy remains central because different apes interpret and use his teachings in different ways.

Do I need to watch the previous Planet of the Apes films first?

No. Reviews indicate that newcomers can follow the main story. Watching the 2011–2017 trilogy adds context about Caesar and makes the film’s treatment of historical memory more rewarding.

What are the main weaknesses identified by critics?

The recurring concerns are the 145-minute runtime, uneven pacing, less-developed human characters, and a final act that relies on more familiar franchise-action conventions than the film’s political ideas suggest.

The Bottom Line

Kingdom of the Planet of the Apes is a strong, ambitious continuation built on extraordinary visual effects and a promising new ape-centered society. First reviews praise its craft and ideas while stopping short of calling it the franchise’s best installment. Expect an impressive reset and an engaging beginning to a new era, rather than another Dawn or War.
