Bryan Kohberger’s parents and two older sisters became part of the public story after his arrest in connection with the November 13, 2022, killings of University of Idaho students Madison Mogen, Kaylee Goncalves, Xana Kernodle and Ethan Chapin. The family’s presence at court hearings, its public statements and later reporting have drawn intense attention—but the available record does not establish that any relative knew about or participated in the crimes.

Kohberger pleaded guilty to four counts of first-degree murder and one count of burglary on July 2, 2025. He was sentenced on July 23, 2025, to four consecutive fixed life sentences without the possibility of parole. A post-conviction petition filed on July 27, 2026, seeks to challenge the guilty plea, but it does not change his status as a convicted prisoner serving those sentences.

Who are Bryan Kohberger’s parents?

Kohberger’s parents are Michael Kohberger and Maryann Kohberger. Court documents also render his mother’s name as Mary Ann Kohberger.

The family lived in eastern Pennsylvania, where Bryan and his two older sisters attended schools in the Pleasant Valley School District. Both parents worked for the district. Michael was employed as a maintenance worker, while Maryann worked in education support staff. Michael retired in June 2019 after more than 12 years with the district, and Maryann retired in June 2020 after 16 years.

Their occupations and family background became public through news coverage and court-related reporting, not because either parent sought a public role. Much of the attention around them followed Bryan’s arrest at the family home in Pennsylvania on December 30, 2022.

What did his parents say after his arrest?

Shortly after the arrest, Michael and Maryann issued a statement through then-public defender Jason LaBar. They expressed sympathy for the families of the four victims, said they would continue to support Bryan as their son, and stated that they intended to let the legal process proceed while cooperating with law enforcement.

That statement is important because it reflects two positions at once: sympathy for the victims’ families and support for their son. Neither position provides evidence about what the parents knew before the killings. Continued family support, public silence or a relative’s presence at court should not be treated as proof of complicity or prior knowledge.

Michael accompanied Bryan during the drive from Washington state to Pennsylvania before the arrest. Both parents attended Kohberger’s guilty-plea hearing on July 2, 2025. Maryann later attended the July 23 sentencing hearing and was reported to have cried during victim-impact statements.

Who are Bryan Kohberger’s sisters?

Bryan Kohberger has two older sisters: Melissa, also known as Mel, and Amanda. Both grew up in the Pleasant Valley school system in Pennsylvania.

Melissa “Mel” Kohberger

Mel Kohberger gave her first known public interview in a New York Times report published January 3, 2026, later summarized and independently reported by the Idaho Statesman. She described the family’s shock, grief and confusion after Bryan’s arrest and said the family had not known that he was responsible for the killings.

According to the account, Mel learned about the arrest from Amanda, who told her she was with the FBI and that Bryan had been arrested. Mel did not attend Kohberger’s Idaho court proceedings in person. She had planned to attend the July 2025 sentencing but remained on the East Coast to help care for their father, who was experiencing heart problems.

Mel also said she left her job after the case led to a large number of inquiries being directed to her employer. Her interview was an account of the family’s reaction after the arrest—not evidence that she had advance knowledge of the murders.

Amanda Kohberger

Amanda Kohberger has been publicly identified as a school counselor. She attended the July 23, 2025, sentencing hearing with her mother.

Amanda was the only immediate member of Kohberger’s family ultimately identified on the prosecution’s unsealed potential-trial-witness list. That designation did not mean she had been accused of wrongdoing. Prosecutors considered her a possible witness, but Kohberger pleaded guilty before a trial took place. Prosecutors later said they decided not to call any members of the Kohberger family.

A judge had previously ruled that Kohberger’s parents and both sisters could attend the planned trial even though they might later be called as witnesses. The issue became moot when Kohberger entered his guilty plea. No member of his family testified at trial because there was no trial.

What is known—and what is not

The Kohberger family’s public story is limited. Reliable reporting documents their Pennsylvania background, their employment histories, their statements after the arrest and their attendance at court hearings. It does not establish that Michael, Maryann, Melissa or Amanda helped plan the killings, knew about them in advance or caused Kohberger to plead guilty.

Online rumors have also falsely attributed a book about the murders to one of Kohberger’s sisters. A fact-checking report found that the purported book was not written by her, and the family’s attorney denied the attribution.

The distinction matters in a case that generated extensive online speculation. Amanda’s appearance on a potential witness list was not a finding of guilt or evidence of a motive. Mel’s decision to speak publicly was not evidence of prior knowledge. Likewise, the parents’ support for their son cannot be used to establish what they knew about his actions.

As of the sentencing record, Kohberger remains convicted and imprisoned under four consecutive life sentences without parole. His later post-conviction filing is an attempt to reopen or challenge aspects of the case; it does not erase the guilty plea or the judgment while the petition is pending.
