How the groups work
Yellow: Things worn on lapels
AWARENESS RIBBON, BOUTONNIÈRE, LAPEL PIN and LAVALIER all belong near the lapel of a jacket. A boutonnière is a decorative flower, while an awareness ribbon signals support for a cause. A lapel pin is self-explanatory; a lavalier can refer to a clip-on microphone worn close to the lapel.
Green: Cocktails
The drink group is COSMOPOLITAN, GREYHOUND, SCREWDRIVER and SEA BREEZE. The names are deliberately mixed with objects, animals and places elsewhere in the grid. A Cosmopolitan uses vodka and cranberry, a Greyhound combines gin or vodka with grapefruit, a Screwdriver uses vodka and orange juice, and a Sea Breeze is generally vodka, cranberry and grapefruit.

Blue: Pixar protagonists
These clues point to leading characters or central figures from Pixar films rather than naming the films directly:
- CLOWNFISH — Marlin and Nemo from Finding Nemo
- GRUMPY OLD MAN — Carl Fredricksen from Up
- RACECAR — Lightning McQueen from Cars
- TALKING DOLL — Woody from Toy Story
The category is therefore PIXAR PROTAGONISTS, with each tile describing a recognizable character or character type from one of the studio’s films.
Purple: Starting with synonyms for “eat”
The final group depends on the first word of each phrase. BOLT, CHOW, SCARF and WOLF can all mean to eat, especially to eat quickly. They begin the phrases BOLT CUTTER, CHOW MEIN, SCARF RING and WOLF EEL.
This is the puzzle’s most deceptive category because the complete tiles point in unrelated directions: a tool, a noodle dish, an accessory and a fish. The connection appears only after separating each tile’s opening word from the rest.

A small but important tile correction
The purple group contains SCARF RING. Some reproduced answer lists call it “SCAR RING,” but that is not the tile used in puzzle #894. The full word is SCARF RING, and “scarf” is the synonym for eating that makes the category work.
