The Russians – An intimate journey through Russia (1/2) is a DW Documentary portrait of everyday life through encounters with people from six generations. The programme looks beyond Moscow and the Kremlin, following Jelena, Veronika, and Kirill as it explores their lives and experiences.

What is Part 1 about?

DW describes the film as exploring its subjects’ everyday lives, hopes, experiences, political views, living standards, and customs. The programme also places their situations alongside official studies of their generations; the synopsis does not identify those studies or establish that the selected people represent Russia as a whole.

Part 1 introduces three people with different circumstances:

  • Jelena is a surrogate mother who works in a children’s home.
  • Veronika is a 16-year-old boarding-school student in western Siberia. Her parents are Khanty reindeer herders.
  • Kirill is a young adult who practices no-holds-barred boxing outside his regular job.

DW’s programme synopsis says: “Encounters with Russians from six different generations help us get to know a Russia beyond Moscow and the Kremlin.” This is the programme’s framing, rather than a finding from an independently assessed social study.
